As someone who would consider themselves a straight ally to the LGBT community (hopefully that feeling would be reciprocated) this was a very eye opening book. I never knew that some of the people in the book were LGBT, more's the pity on my part. If I had to complain about something, it would be the concentration of gay men over lesbians, bisexuals, and transgender individuals, which could possibly be due to the sheer numbers of people who were identified as such. Also, with a publication date of 2005, a lot of the information is dated, mainly about people alive at the time of publication who have since passed. An updated edition would be appreciated. The last complaint, and the one which for a star deducted from the rating, was the formatting. Maybe it's just a Kindle thing, but it's disconcerting to see a word hyphenated to indicate that it is supposed to be printed across two lines smack dab in the middle of a line, where it isn't needed. But, I'm probably just being a stickler for proofreading. This is a very good book, in spite of my complaints.

Perhaps this would be a more useful reference source for someone completely divorced from broadcast media in general. Few surprises, repetitive entries.

Well-researched. Comprehensive coverage of this genre of cinematic films. A must both as a reference work, but also as a pleasurable and informative volume to peruse. I can easily give this a five star rating.

Great book. Needs an update.

This engaging encyclopedia contains over 160 entries and includes notable actors, actresses, screenwriters, directors, comedians and more (both living and dead), as well as specialized topics. Entries on individuals cover a page or two while broader subjects (like "American Television - Dramas and "British Television") are much lengthier. Contributors include professors, scholars, writers and critics in the field. For the most part, entries are thorough, covering a person's career and accomplishments as well as illuminating their private life and what part, if any, their sexuality had on their professional lives. Some subjects are more revealing than others. For example, entries on Agnes Moorehead and Cary Grant, two examples of famous "were they or were they not?," don't really include any new information, aside from gossip, and the basis for their inclusion is questionable. On the other hand, recently deceased contemporary subjects, who never publicly came out, like Roddy McDowell, James Ivory and Ismail Merchant, are included. Famous bi-sexuals (like Tallulah Bankhead, Errol Flynn, Brad David and Margaret Cho) are included. A notable highlight of the book is the inclusion of contemporary actors, like Dan Butler, Alan Cumming and Lily Tomlin. There are so notable omissions (like Leslie Jordan, Sara Gilbert and David Hyde Pierce), but the editor states that the book is not meant to be comprehensive and the lack of information on certain individuals is often the reason for their absence. Hopefully, this is a reference work that will be revised in years to come. It is a helpful and informative source.

This is an accessible overview of Winfield Scott. Eisenhower provides more than just a bald record of Scott's many achievements -- he gives valuable insights into his personality and his motivations. I think Eisenhower benefits from his association with his father, and through him his knowledge of the allied commanders of World War ll, many of whom he also knew personally. It certainly allows him to speak to Scott as committed to a professional army.

A person long forgotten to history. He was a hero to his country and unknowingly prepared the army for the American Civil War. He was responsible for grooming many future generals; Meade, Lee, Jackson and Longstreet for example. Many of the future Civil War generals cut their teeth at one point under Scott.

I am a Second Seminole War period (1835-1842) researcher. This book was a reference in a bibliography I had seen and I purchased it based on the fact that it had good references, a solid bibliography, was well written and very well researched. This reference has been invaluable for the information that I have been able to obtain and use for my research. I would say that it is a must have for anyone researching Florida's Second Seminole War.

Although, as a military officer and, thus, a student of history, I knew of Winfield Scott, I never knew him as anything other than as the author of the Anaconda Plan and as being a head of the Army too old to act effectively as a commander. Until I read Lions of the West by Robert Morgan, which had a chapter about his career. His performance during the Mexican War, plus his application of his wide professional reading to US Army tactics & organization, made me realize I needed to know more about him. John Eisenhower has done an excellent job covering this multi-talented individual's career and accomplishments. I wish I'd read it years earlier.

Agent of Destiny: The Life and Times of General Winfield Scott by John S. D. Eisenhower is, while a bit misnamed, an excellent introduction to both the history and culture of the 19th century army and General Winfield Scott. Most Americans remember Winfield Scott as the General who made an amphibious landing on the east coast of Mexico and marched to Mexico City. Since that is about the sum of what is taught in 11th Grade American History class, that is where most reasonably well read American's knowledge of Winfield Scott stops. Reading this book is a good first step in rediscovering the man who defined the culture and professional competency of the 19th Century American Army. While this book has some glaring weaknesses, it does introduce the casual reader to some interesting ideas and arguments.First, the near complete destruction of the U S Army under Gen "Mad" Anthony Wayne by Shawnee Indians in the early 1790's. While I knew that the nomative War Chief of the Shawnees - believe his name was Simon Gurdy, but my memory may be off - was a white man who held a reserve commission in the British Army, I did not realize that this was one of the incidents that led to the War of 1812. The idea that as recent as the 1790's some of the Indian tribes had enough firepower and resources to crush the bulk of the U S Army in a single battle both shows the relative strength of those particular Indian tribes and the grotesque incompetence of most American military leadership of the time.Second, America is a country that is at its best when it is a country of second chances that believes in forgiveness as much as accountability. Winfield Scott started off his military career by being courts martialed for calling a senior general a traitor. Even though this was probably a true statement, this was not an auspicious beginning. Likewise, from the book it appears as if Winfield Scott actually led his brigade into a slaughter at the battle of Lundy Lane. Yet, he retained his rank as a Brigadier General. That combined with his youth almost ensured that at some point in the future he would become the commanding general of theU S Army. That somewhat fortuitous set of facts turned out to be pretty beneficial for the United States in not only Winfield Scott's peacetime efforts, but also in his skillful handling of the Mexican American War. Clearly, the Winfield Scott who led his brigade to slaughter in 1812 was not the one who skillfully defeated an Army in a foreign land when outnumbered three to one.Third, there are a series of important ideas and debates that have shaped and, to a certain extant, continue to shape the U S Army. All of these debates are touched upon - although Eisenhower does not elaborate - in this book. What sort of military does America need when all of its peer competitors are so distant in terms of space and time? What is the role of conventional forces and special forces, this question first comes to light in the various Indian campaigns in Florida and Georgia. What is the proper role of "regular" forces versus "reserve" or "volunteer" forces? Perhaps the last is an important question today in Iraq. Indeed, Eisenhower's discussions of "red legged" infantry in Florida made me think about modern day Iraq where Armor and Artillery soldiers are serving in counter-insurgency missions.Fourth, Winfield Scott was a much better peacemaker than war maker. I lost count of the number of times that Winfield Scott negotiated away potential conflict between the United Kingdom and the U S. The last was after he had retired when RADM Wilkes - famous from the U S Exploring Expedition - had initiated an international incident by seizing two British diplomats from a Confederate ship. Moreover, Winfield Scott's role in diffusing the "Nullification Crises", perhaps, shaped the nature of American history forever. If South Carolina had left the Union in the 1820s, it is possible that the Civil War might have happened three decades earlier. It is likely that without those thirty years of industrial development and the various crises in 1840s Europe to feed Northern population growth, the South just might have won that hypothetical Civil War.None of these topics are really expanded upon. However, this is a good book for a basic introduction to Winfield Scott and 19th Century U S Army. I highly recommend it as a primer to begin to learn more.

I still haven't finished reading this page turning book. I have 2 chapters left and so far I have not been disappointed. Winfield Scott served his country well and I would hope that he has not been lost to history. This book brings to life this mans place in history. I enjoyed the chapters concerning his role in the American-Mexican War and I would like to read this authors book on that conflict, a shame it's no longer available. Buy this book and enjoy, recommended reading!

This is an excellent introduction to one of the United State's greatest military leaders. It is not an exhaustive account but it never claims to be one. I think this book is perfect for the military history buff who wants to find out who Scott was and what his accomplishments were. The book is less than 500 pages long so Eisenhower's treatment of Scott's over 50 years of Military service is concise. However, it highlights many (if not all) of Scott's successes and failures during his tenure. The book has whetted my appetite to find out more about this illustrous man. Read Eisenhower's book on the Mexican War, "So far from God" for a more in-depth examination of General Scott's masterful campaign to capture Mexico City and force the Mexican government to capitulate to the U.S.

Well written biography of a forgotten patriot. Great summary of era leading up to the Civil War.

A Review by Anthony T. Riggio of “The Price” by Alexandra Sokoloff , November 24, 2013I downloaded this book for my Kindle in March 2012 and started to read it but put it down and I can’t say exactly why. This month, November 2013, I selected it when I had nothing in mind to read. I started to read it and it was familiar yet unfamiliar. It was like de je vu experience, but I could not remember if I ever read the book before. I kept reading it until I was sure it was a new experience, never connecting it to my initial exposure in March of 2012. What had happened to the best of my ability to recall was that I found the book too dark for me at the time.Notwithstanding, I read the entire book and I have to say, it was a dark and yet intriguing story spun by Alexandra Sokoloff. It was a story of both love and sacrifice and selfishness. The story takes you on a journey of hallucinatory experiences or experiences that the main character Will Sullivan, the District Attorney of Boston, who is also a candidate for Governor for Massachusetts, cannot distinguish from reality during the illness of his daughter. The book never mentions evil at work or for that matter, benevolent forces and the reader is left to figure this out, which happens.I have never read any books by Sokoloff and it may be awhile before I attempt to read her again. It was definitely a story of unexpected results from seemingly good intentions. I rated the book three stars because it was well written but not a story to my liking or enjoyment that left me in a happy mood. If you like the unexpected and somewhat supernaturally oriented story, you probably will rated it higher than three stars.

Hell is a the children's cancer ward. Hell is losing someone you love. Hell is a rotunda where Sisyphus and Tantalus continue their eons of suffering.Hell is marked by a red line that leads to Salk's office. In The Price, Sokoloff weaves dread and suspense into a fabric of pure horror. You might not want a tee-shirt made of it, but when it comes to a horror novel, this particular blend is a perfect fit. Sokoloff's background is as a screenwriter, and occasionally this shows in an excess of stage-like narration and the overuse of lighting descriptors. None of that detracts from the enrapturing flow of the story. It was one of those books I couldn't wait to pick up and read - and sadly, that happens probably in one out of every twenty books I finish (and more like one out of every fifty I start). Go, get thee this book, and beware the man offering miracles!

Paranormal thrillers often get me going with the chills and thrills and then disappoint me somewhere just before or around the resolution of the mystery and beyond. Understanding too much in paranormal stories: well it just takes the para out and normalizes too much! Not so, here. I was creeped out from start to finish. My only criticism is that the first half of the book was agonizingly slow, in which the protagonists are being stalked by a supernatural being who obviously wants to cut a deal they can't refuse. And yet I could. not. stop. reading. because I wanted to know what the consequences would be. It was well written and worth slogging through, as the consequences were surprising, twisty and horrific. The narration is flawless and the story hangs together beautifully although it leaves me with a few questions about the internal logic. Very little is said about the origin and motives of the supernatural being. A couple of peripheral characters are clearly used as distractions to keep the reader confused and I would have liked either more or less of them.Regardless, I will read more from Sokoloff as she is highly skillful at creating vivid environment and strong clear characters. It's really more like watching a movie than reading a book. A word of advice: read it when you have time to finish it!

I love this writer, but this book went on and one and on. I think it needed more backstory, shifting points of view and more plot twists to make it an effective novel. What it was turned out to be a novella in novel length. Not that it wasn't well written but the halls turning back on themselves only works for so long and then it gets boring. I finished it long after I figured out the "mystery" (which was easy) because I like this writer so much.

I've read all of Alexandra Sokoloff's mystery thrillers, so I guess that makes me a fan. If you like the occult, she's one of the best. The Price is puzzling at times but intriguing to the end, if you're into the genre. Sokoloff is a imaginative story-teller and The Price is another example of her writing skills. You have to wonder: with the weird happenings we witness on the political scene almost daily, could the occult have something to do with it, as it does in The Price? Naww. Political truth is stranger than fiction––even beyond Sokoloff's f fiction.Bob Rueff, fellow author

Chilling, moving, amazing. I tend to shy away from thrillers because, although I love the supernatural in stories, the characters often don't move me. But Will and Joanna were so real, so alive and in pain and yet so aristocratically pristine (despite Will's unraveling). The portrait Sokoloff draws of their love and the sacrifices they make is powerful, entirely believable and heart breaking. Salk was perfect, understated and horrible. My heart pounded through my throat the entire read. I usually skip ahead to the end of a book because I just can't wait, but I simply couldn't with The Price. Every page gripped. Sokoloff's writing is fluid, evocative, and wonderfully stirring. A NYT review called Sokoloff one of "Shelley's Daughters." Absolutely!

i loved this psychological thriller. I work in the medical field, so I enjoyed that this took place in a hospital. As always, Ms. Sokoloff has a great way with describing the scenes and characters.A great twist on real issues that take place in the hospital setting.
