This is my best resource for identifying American ceramics with two exceptions: any California pottery except the largest and best known companies, and studio pottery which is outside the scope of this guide. I have been able to determine in which line of products an item fits, and differentiate years of production. These issues are particularly confusing for the California potteries where company buyouts and movement of designers and artisans from one company to another were rampant in the mid 20th century.A new edition would help fill the holes with input from collectors in particular.

I bought this on a whim for my husband who collects restaurant china. It was a used copy and was only a couple dollars. This book is an amazing fountain of information on china markings. He has not stopped reading it. If I had spent 500$ on this it would have been worth it given the amount of pleasure he has gotten from this reference.My husband dragged out his entire collection of restaurant china and was able to accurately identify every single piece by the maker. Since he is not interested in resale, the lack of current valuation was not an issue. Being able to get insight into each piece was of great import. He is also not a collector of sets; he has a lot of random pieces he was able to place geographically and in time.This is an amazing, well researched guide to US made china and would be a great addition to the collector's library.

This is an incredibly detailed compilation of pottery manufacturer information, assembled before PCs and spreadsheets would have made the job easier. I consult this book constantly for identification purpose but also history and to use some of the additional materials about distributors and the geographical index. Using this work in conjunction with visiting RWCN, the Restaurant Ware Collectors Network (http://www.restaurantwarecollectors.com) will help with many many ID questions for identifying the more utilitarian pottery and porcelain once produced by so many US companies. Sadly, the book is a catalog of one sector of our own industrial past, as little remains today.

Although it did not have the mark I was looking for, I will be using this book for future reference.

This book is prodigious in scope: the pottery marks (with huge varieties within each company) and historical information are both invaluable and interesting. However, the indexing is weak, which leads one to thumbing through pages trying to find an elusive mark. This is such a well-researched, vast collection of marks, however, that laborious searches are rewarded.

If you are interested in the lives of the coaches featured in this book, read it. If you want to learn something about coaching, I wouldn't bother. The author does a nice job of chronicling the lives of the coaches and the stories are interesting. I enjoyed learning what makes some the coaches "tick" and experiences in their lives that have led them to the position they currently hold. There is little research or data presented. It seams the author spent some time with the subjects and wrote a nice story about their experiences.

I truly enjoyed reading the story concerning Dabo Swinney. Had this coach's story not been included my rating of the book would not have passed 2 stars. Nothing really new here.

As a lifelong sports fan, I have not read many books about sports, but this book is not about sports, it's about life and leadership. I enjoyed the fact that the subjects were all working in sports and was able to identify with them as leaders and took many notes throughout the read. Definitely reccomend this one!

A good book about what makes the coaches in the book special. In most instances it is a small biography with a little bit of what they believe. I don't think there is anything revolutionary in here if you have read any coaching books. It is an entertaining read with a nugget or two you can take away.

Encouraging synopsis of successful coaches. Not all of them are successful in a wholistic sense. They are human and make poor decisions and good choices we can all learn from. My favorites were Sweeney and Stevens.

I just finished this book and while I enjoyed it, I rate it a 4 Star. I would call it a good book about what makes a coach successful, but I didn’t see it rating 5 Stars.

I really enjoyed this book, great writing, terrific personalities that Seth Davis highlighted. Lots and lots of great takeaways! Highly recommend it!

About the Author

Maury Aaseng has always been excited about drawing and art. After graduating with a BFA in graphic design from the University of Minnesota--Duluth, he moved to San Diego to begin an illustration career. His freelance work over the last eight years has spanned a variety of subject matter and styles. The range of his work has included anatomical illustration and cartoons for medical textbooks, informative illustrations for young adult nonfiction, custom watercolor work for independent authors, and logo design and creation. The variety has continued to fuel the creative spark that makes illustration work rewarding for him. Well I’ve always wanted to be able to do cartoon drawings too and have never seemed to get it quite right… no matter how many comics and graphic novels I read, no matter how many cartoons I watch! :-DSo I really enjoyed ‘The Little Book of Cartooning & Illustration’ as it had some great step by step hints and tips that really have encouraged me to try again. I did do some cartoon faces, but as I used a very light pencil they’re not showing up that well in any photos I have taken of them. So, please sceptics of my reviews who say I can’t truly review a book I’ve not tried – I DID try this one, I just can’t show the results. Oh, and please feel free to visit when I am trying the next murder mystery I’m reading. ;-)‘The Little Book of Cartooning & Illustration’ is just that, a quick little book that gives you the step by step basics of generic cartooning. I also liked how it gave step by steps on how to turn a drawing from realistic to cartoonish… is that a word? I feel this is a great book for young and old artists wanting to try – or perfect – their cartooning skills.In the layout and formatting side of things I do have a minor quibble… but it is VERY minor. I really didn’t like the way it kept swapping from portrait to landscape and back again. I am sure, if I had been reading a paperback version of this book it wouldn’t have been as annoying… but I’d still have been frustrated. If I’m using a book to learn a skill that uses my hands I don’t like having to keep moving the position of the book to keep learning. Okay, so this may just be a fault with me, the reader, and not the actual book so relax everyone!Would I recommend this book to others?Yes I would. As said, this book would be a great little guide to get artists – both young and old – to give cartooning a go. Some who feel they can already draw fairly decent cartoons may also benefit from having a quick read through as we should never be too old or too experienced to learn something new.Would I buy this book for myself?Yes I would. If I am serious about illustrating some of my own writing with cartoon figures, I can see ‘The Little Book of Cartooning & Illustration’ being a very helpful book to have on hand… despite the layout quibble.In summary: A good “little book” to add to your collection if you’re interested in doing some cartooning.

This little book of cartooning has a lot of examples and step-by-step instructions mainly to create facial expressions and people, with the last part of the book dedicated to animals, objects and how to create 1 and 2 panel gags. It is a friendly guide without much theory and plenty of practice pages to draw on, which makes it suitable for kids.Judging by all the authors involved, I was expecting a guide with more personal techniques and tips based on their work experience, but soon enough I realized it wasn't meant to be an in-depth guide for those seriously studying cartooning. However, it is great for kids and teenagers! it has all those practice pages, enough tips to draw your first characters and even Justin Bieber and Lady Gaga's step-by-step caricatures. It has been made simple enough that you (or your kid) won't struggle or feel overwhelmed and will be eager to try these techniques out.Picture: As usual, I tried a couple of their examples. I must admit it was satisfying to complete something that looks nice, even if it's from the book examples and not from my imagination. *i read this as an eARC*

I can't draw at all, so this book was fun and educational. I sat for hours and played with this book, seeing how well I could copy and put to use what I had learned. I still need to practice, BUT, I'm on my way! Without this, I'd still be dreaming of drawing cartoon characters! Loved it!

Various pencils, papers, markers templates and digital tools were introduced by the author to get the novice sketcher up and running. It was an easy inexpensive way to start.To kick things off, illustrations were drawn that advanced in a step-by-step manner for all of the cartoons. At the end of each, worksheets were provided for practice. The sequence from rough draft to finished drawing in color was clearly demonstrated.Beginning by first drawing an oval, I enjoyed trying my hand at creating a simple face with only the most minor details. Nowhere near the level of the sample, it’s imaginable that that with some careful practice there would likely be an increase in craftsmanship.As the tutorial continued, the initial drawings were further enhanced with basic expressions. Soon, defined tell-tale emotions such as happiness or anger were cleverly drawn upon faces. Finally, adding color to the drawing brought it all to life.Creativity knows no bounds. When it comes to cartooning, the sky's the limit. Experience with an added dash of creativity will yield magnificent results. Having it all, this book is divided into four parts that complement the world of cartoonists.An invaluable resource, this is the go-to book for cartoon drawing. Truth is a dangerous book. By "dangerous" I mean that Truth challenges the notion that we, as modern humans, generally have a complete picture of the world around us. Truth (the book) made me feel appropriately uncomfortable because the text created opportunities for self-reflection on my most basic beliefs. Macdonald doesn't seek to challenge any particular set of beliefs, but he does work to establish a framework by which we might interrogate the world's information.I bought this book with the intention of using it in the senior-level high school class I teach: Contemporary World Issues. This class has been allowed a wide latitude in the topics it chooses; this class has almost unlimited potential in its pursuit of understanding a rapidly changing world.To navigate this potential, I’ve been searching for texts that wrestle with the idea of ‘finding truth.’ After reading Truth, I received both a sense of relief and urgency. I am relieved that there are accessible resources that codify the multi-faceted nature of truth; and I urgently want to get these resources into the hands of my students.I strongly suggest encountering Truth on your own. The author is a good steward and cultivator of the information presented. Macdonald has the reader's best interest at heart: this is evident by his leading us through--and giving us our own navigational tools--the morass of "competing truths."

3 star book for sure. Early on the information is intriguing but it gets too much like a reference book to the end.

If you love to live in a world of confirmation bias, then you won't like this book. If you are open to understanding facts and how both sides of the same debate can use the same facts to sway opinion, you will find this an interesting read. Great book!

I received an advanced reader's copy of this book from the publisher, however, my opinions are my own!I'm just going to say up front here that the cover of this book is atrocious. I have no idea why the publisher chose it, but it's really awful in my opinion. They say don't judge a book by its cover, but everyone really does, don't they? And had I not been GIVEN this book, I'd never have bought it on my own, mostly because I wouldn't have stuck around long enough to even read the synopsis. Which is a fact I bring up specifically, because for a book with such a shockingly bad cover, the book itself was incredible, to the point where I literally couldn't stop reading my husband passages. I read him so many, in fact, that he eventually tapped out, and just read the book himself, and then "borrowed" it from me so he could loan it to a friend.This book really is one of those. Once you read it, you can't get it out of your head. Don't believe me? Then read this passage (though it was only one of hundreds that I ended up highlighting):"In 1986, the Guardian newspaper ran a TV and cinema advert that has stuck in my mind like few others. In newsreel black and white, it showed a skinhead running away from an approaching car. The soundtrack was completely silent except for an authoritative voiceover: 'An event seen from one point of view gives one impression.' The same man is then shown from a different angle: he runs straight at a businessman, seemingly set on attacking him or stealing his briefcase. 'Seen from another point of view it gives quite a different impression.' Another cut, and we see the scene from above. A suspended load of construction material is juddering over the businessman's head, out of control. The skinhead hauls the businessman aside, saving his life as the load crashes to the ground. 'But it's only when you get the whole picture you can fully understand what's going on,' concludes the voiceover......Created by John Webster of BMP, 'points of view' is still cited as one of the best TV adverts ever made. A sizeable British audience came away with the strong suggestion that only the Guardian presents the world as it really is."That example was unspeakably chilling to me, to realize that even when presenting the "truth" people are capable of twisting it to their own ends, to achieve their own goals, which likely have nothing to do with what's really in your best interest. And after reading this book the one thing I can say for sure, is the only person who is qualified to determine which truths really ARE in your best interest, is you!!!
