Great book very well written. Bird is very honest on his thoughts on the NBA. I would suggest this book to any NBA fanatic.

I bought this book, which was written with Jackie MacMullan because I really liked the book When the Game was Ours, by Bird and Magic Johnson "with Jackie MacMullan." I gave up on Bird Watching after about 40 pages. Much of what I read seemed to be direct quotes from Bird. Bird's speaking style was not that enjoyable for me to read and much of the same material was covered in When the Game was Ours and was, to me, much more readable in that particular book. I highly recommend When the Game was Ours.

Bird Watching, an autobiography by Larry Bird, is a story for any lover of sports. Bird Watching is a detailed account of the life of Larry Bird, from his NBA career with the Boston Celtics to his coaching position with the Indiana Pacers. After reading the first page of the book, the reader realizes there is more to this NBA legend than meets the eye. Unlike most professional basketball players, Larry Bird never regretted the day he left the NBA and even says that the day he retired was "one of the happiest days of [his] life." Faced with chronic back problems and an irregular heart, Bird was happy to see the day when he no longer had to endure the pain of playing the sport he loved more than anything. Coming from the man himself, the story describes Bird's life in a detailed and personal manner. From beginning to end, the reader easily notices the uniqueness of this man's character and not only sees, but feels the impact this incredible man left on so many fellow players, fans, and loved ones. I thought this was a great book, especially for a sports fan. I felt that for a sport's book, it was particularly well written. The author's style allows the reader to get a personal glimpse of the life of Larry Bird and causes the reader to feel as if they knew this NBA legend. Because of the story's subject, the author employs very few literary devices. However, the author uses many similes in describing Bird's injuries, allowing the reader to appreciate Bird's choice in leaving the NBA. The book lacks an overall dominant theme, but simply wishes to convey the story of one of the greatest and most unique basketball players of all time.

Regarding the abridged version of Bird Watching on audio tape, listening to Larry's book simply reinforced everything I've always believed about him. One of the most repeated comments the media makes is that Larry is a "simple" man. They mean it as a compliment. However, I totally disagree. His book is no great work of art. It is not going to win the Pulitzer Prize. However, it reveals that Larry Bird is no simple man. He's smart, funny, sensitive, and most of all, his own person. In Bird Watching, he explains that he didn't choose to coach the Pacers simply because they are from Indiana or to help them build a new arena or to become a marketing tool. Larry Bird is no sell-out. In one of the better chapters of the book, Larry explains the difficulties with his back. Surprisingly, he said that even if he had not been a professional athlete, he probably would have had similar problems because of a congenital problem. Like most people, I had no idea that his back was as bad as it was. Or that he played in so much pain for so long. Listening to his book, I could sense how frustrating the problem must have been. The most illuminating part was the way he explained the psychological ramifications of his back problems. It wasn't so much that he couldn't play, it was because he didn't want to let down the season-ticket holders who had paid good money to watch him for the entire season. I believe that those of us who had the pleasure of following Bird's career are truly lucky. Who can forget the double overtime game against Chicago in which Jordan scored 63 points, yet the Celtics still won? Who can forget Johnny Most screaming Bird stole the ball! Bird stole the ball! (And DJ having the court presence to actually make the basket?) Who can forget Bird hitting the deck against Indiana and coming back out of the tunnel to chants of Larry! Larry! Larry! Who can forget the championships? Larry Bird is a unique and impressive person. I wish there was some way I could thank him for the years of hard work, loyalty, and drive he gave to the Celtics, the Pacers, his teammates, his players, and his fans. We all truly, truly appreciate it.

Since that time the five republics have followed different but in some ways similar trajectories. They are low income nations with loads of primary commodities: Gold, Silver, Rare Earth Elements, oil and natural gas. They are also landlocked and the region is bordered by two great powers - China and Russia - and two regional powers - Pakistan and Iran.From 1992 until the second Chechen War and the fourth wave of Uighur violence in China, the region was largely ignored by the Great Powers. The US invaded Afghanistan; Russia was reasserting its influence in the "Near Abroad"; and China was looking for energy sources and near markets.This work moves to the New Great Game between US, China and Russia in the Eurasian Heartland. It contains chapters on military and economic influence of China and Russia, attempts at regional integration, the US's Northern Distribution Network. It also contains chapters on outside actors: Turkey's attempt to build a pan-Turkic, pan-Sunni bloc, Iran's interest in the Persian speaking region, India's involvement in opening up trade to attempt to bypass Pakistan and also a chapter on South Korea and Japan in Central Asia (spoiler alert on that one: they don't do much, China and Russia are geographically in the way).Denoon then finishes with a wrap up of the other authors. This is what was delivered as a digital copy of the third edition, when in fact it is a very different international version. I am not able to use this for class. Buyer beware.

The book came with all the pages completely unattached to the spine of the book.

I was required to use this book for my IO course. I am not able to compare it side by side with other books, but i can say that its approach to the many IO topics is very rich, and an easy read. Student with an Economic background will most definitely find it an easy read. For those not versed in Economics, theoretical and empirical information is presented in a seamless manner.

This book is very informative and you will learn vital information on Industrial Organization. The key terms come in handy and the explanations in the book on the concepts will help you tremendously in grasping the concepts.

Horrible quality.

I did not appreciate this. If I had more time, I would have returned this item. I ordered through amazon.com because my University Bookstore sold out of copies. I saved about $15 by ordering through Amazon. It was supposed to come sooner than the book store could deliver it, but Amazon's delivery was late. I was penalized because I could not do assignments that were due.The book I received was basically 500 photo copies bound together. No color (as you may know with multiple actions, supply and demand charts need to be color coded), thicker and bulkier than the original version.In short, I thought this would be the same book coming in about the same amount of time for a little less money than the bookstore. Had I know the product would be delivered late, and that it was just a book full of black-and-white-photo-copies, I would not have bought this from amazon.Be sure you know that you're getting the ACTUAL TEXT BOOK before ordering from this site!

Randolph, the Thelemic Magicians who purchased the Magickal Childe's 1st English translation Sexual magic 30 years ago, and modern-day Occult and/or Tantra students already familiar with Maria de Naglowska's The Sacred Rite of Magical Love: A Ceremony of Word and Flesh,The Light of Sex: Initiation, Magic, and Sacrament, and Advanced Sex Magic: The Hanging Mystery Initiation.All will be well served by this recent new translation. The translator and editor is quite familiar with Dr. Randolph's works, and is often able to cite page and paragraph of works such as "The New Mola" and "The Ansieratic Mysteries" to firmly ascertain what are Randolph's teachings, and what portions are certainly Ms. de Naglowska's own additions. Even so, there are parts and portions the translator leaves unattributed as they are not found in the published writings of either Ms. de Naglowska or Dr. Randolph.A close comparison with the Magickal Childe edition shows some changes in translation; there are times the translator suggests that Ms. Naglowska may have been working from a hand-written manuscript, and offers what seem to be logical suggestions. I suspect that the wealth of material available through the Internet, 1st edition reproduction PDFs of all of Dr. Randolph's works, as cited in the present edition, assisted the present translator to identify when the material steers sharply away from Dr. Randolph and towards Ms. de Naglowska's.

I was unaware of this book and found it when I was searching for a “classic by an author of color” for a reading challenge. At 95 pages this is more of a novella than a novel. It was written in 1927 during the Harlem Renaissance. Given the time period, it is a remarkable book that is still relevant today.The story is narrated by Irene Redfield, a light-skinned black woman. She is married to a black physician and they have two sons. She is living in Harlem with her family but grew up in Chicago. During a trip home, she meets a childhood friend named Clare Bellew. Clare is also light-skinned but has decided to “go native,” living her life as a white woman. She is married to a wealthy white man who is an overt racist. He has no idea that his wife and their young daughter are black. Clare insinuates herself into Irene’s life and even comes to New York City for an extended stay. Irene is both fascinated and repelled by Clare. The book examines each woman’s approach to passing for white. Irene, who is insecure, seems to envy Clare’s confidence and also resent it. She also fears that Clare has made a dangerous mistake by lying to her husband about her heritage. There are several tense moments in the book when Irene has the opportunity to out Clare. She always chooses to keep her secret. Irene’s internal struggle between being proud of her heritage and protecting her friend is painfully drawn out to a horrible conclusion.Though the book is short, as are the sentences and paragraphs, it packs a big punch. You can read this quickly, but the book is better when you savor the words and think about the implications. To me, the novel is about mixed feelings and blurred lines. You can feel Irene’s ambivalence. The author does not provide any “right” answers and the book ends with even more questions. Some literary critics suggest that there is a lesbian element to the relationship between Irene and Clare. I wondered about that myself, but that is not a central part of the book in my opinion. Passing was not a part of my college reading list, but I am so glad that I found it.

The title of this book refers to a group of light-skinned African-American women who can "pass" for white during Jim Crow. I give this book five stars, with one reservation. I found the book fascinating, with some amazing writing, and a riveting plot line that you are dropped into without the slightest suspicion, and blindsided by the depth of the psychological drama that unfolds. My criticism is that the book ends too quickly, and too abruptly. I would have read three times as much about this astounding world, and all of the multiple characters, black and white, that are brought to life so vividly, along with the glamor of the Harlem Renaissance. It should have been a much longer book. This writer got a Guggenheim and then couldn't get her subsequent book published. I heard about this book because it was the subject of a discussion at the Waterstones bookstore in London, and since it was an American writer, it made me curious. I suspect the author's life, as a black woman in those days, led her into the kind of poverty and obscurity that Zora Neale Hurston ended up living, as a hotel maid, at the time of her death. We lost out on the kind of body of work they might have produced had they been of a race, class and gender that offered more support for their literary gifts.

It is very unfortunate that we only have precious few works by Larsen to enjoy. Chief among them, of course, are the novels Quicksand and Passing. Quicksand, which is a great book, is longer and more complex (and well worth the read), but Passing is a condensed jewel of a book. And scandalous! It's almost inappropriate to describe a work by the masterful Larsen as "juicy", but that it is. Set in early Twentieth Century Harlem, the story focuses on Irene Redfield, the wife of a fairly affluent (albeit discontent) doctor and mother of two boys. All is more or less well until the reintroduction of the beautiful and bewitching Claire Kennedy into Irene's life. Although both Irene and Claire are of African-American heritage, both can "pass" for white and Larsen explores this idea thoroughly. But "passing" is the theme of the book, both in the obvious and non-obvious sense. There are a few underlying subplots (what makes the story all the more scandalous and juicy) including a hidden subplot (SPOILER AHEAD) involving a sexual attraction between Irene and Claire. Remember, this book was written circa 1920 and one couldn't casually write about a love affair between two women. There's no overt love affair between the two women here, however, at least none that Irene will allow. You'll see my meaning in the last few pages of the story.The real star of this book is Larsen's writing style. Her descriptions and phrasings are lush and vivid, yet she avoids pouring it on too thick, making for never a dull moment. She had a gift for expressing raw underlying emotion. This book (with its close companion "Quicksand") is canonical in many universities and rightfully so. Highly recommended!
