I love the FlyingKids series and this is the second book I got from them. Like the previous one, this book is very informative and interesting. It gives a lot of information about Japan's geography, history, culture, traditions, etc, and it comes with many fun games for the kids. It tells about how many islands there are in Japan and what are the most popular cities there. The part that I like the most is it even teach you how to order food in Japanese. This book is full of fun and I will definitely purchase more in the future!

We are moving to Japan and this is a great way to get our kids excited and not nervous about something new.

Psychologist Alan Downs` guide to authentic living for the gay male, ‘The Velvet Rage,` is a valuable self-help tool for gay men struggling to break free from a life of insecurity, self-loathing, and most of all, shame. Downs` central thesis, one he presents convincingly, is that gay men start off life far more emotionally crippled than most other people.Downs makes the argument that we gay men suffer the effects of a toxic self-image, one that stems from a pit of shame embedded deep inside. He argues we must systematically and assiduously destroy this cancer if we ever entertain the notion of maturing into emotionally healthy adults. This deep-seated and long-enduring sense of shame inhibits us from showing our most genuine feelings and from being our most authentic selves. As a result, we develop a set of theatrical tricks to hide our true selves, to shield us from any chance of honest emotional disclosure. In short, we become master dissemblers, actors, actresses adept at the art of giving others what they want to see and hear from us. All this comes at a horrible cost. Downs states, “…we must hide, presenting to the world a fabricated version of ourselves until the day that we are free to express our sexuality and step out of the closet of shame.” Downs explains in great detail how we ‘compensate for’ rather than ‘confront’ our shame. We become obsessed with out-performing others in our chosen professions, obsessed with physical beauty above all, and perhaps most dangerously, become obsessed with the thrill of seemingly endless sexual conquest.Our ‘velvet rage’ comes out when these compensating strategies begin to weaken and crack, leaking out ferocious and foul bouts of poisonous rage, often directed at innocents. Downs provides a lot of first-hand testimony from other gay men as to how these compensation tactics work and yet, ultimately fail. These quotes are oddly placed in sidebar boxes adjacent to the text body. For the most part, these testimonies do little to strengthen the psychological points Downs strives to make. Rather, they are too general and not always well-fitted to the topic at hand. Furthermore, Downs frequently repeats many of his points throughout the first three-quarters of the book.Downs` shame thesis could have been delineated in a more engaging and meaningful way had he examined the roots of our toxic shame. Does it stem from feeling ‘different’ at an early age? Is it the fear of not fitting in? Is it internalized homophobia or fear of sex with men? Or perhaps is it the fear of being emotionally and physically vulnerable with another man that drives this shame? Or maybe it stems from all of these factors combined? Sadly, Downs never really analyzes this question to any great depth. His book could have been even more helpful and empowering had he done so. Finally, most of Downs` clients share experiences from relatively ‘problem-free’ coming out processes. Those who have struggled with both internal and external self-acceptance might not connect with the experiences presented here.These criticism`s aside, ‘The Velvet Rage’ finishes on a strong note. In fact, the last quarter of the book is the best part, worth the other three- quarters combined. Additions to the second edition, these ‘Skills for Living an Authentic Life’ impart some valuable life wisdom to the reader. Downs shares from his accumulated years’ worth of psycho-therapeutic experience for all to learn from. Each skill is succinctly presented in a short paragraph and then explained in greater detail. Even the titles themselves sound off as tiny snippets of healing help, “Inner peace above all else,` ‘Contentment over approval,’ ‘Accept reality on reality`s terms,` ‘Walk your way out of distress,` ‘Embrace ambivalence,’ ‘Default to forgiveness,’ are all just some of the practical, life-changing tips Downs gifts his readers. While gay men especially need to ‘do and live’ these lessons, anybody, straight or gay, could profit immensely from their common sense wisdom.While “The Velvet Rage’ is not quite the gay bible to life, it does go a long way in helping us understand why we are the way we are. Most importantly, it sheds light on why we ‘behave’ the way we do. Combined with his practical skills section, ‘The Velvet Rage’ is helpful therapy for the gay male. Understanding is the first step towards full self-acceptance and Dr. Alan Downs has done much to help us recognize the face in the mirror.

I agree with the review written by MJ (4 Stars - "Important but flawed" - August 30, 2014), and the fact that 40/40 people (as of the day I'm writing this) have found his review helpful says a lot.MJ's point that almost all the vignettes in the book involve "power gays" is spot on. I am a gay man who loves hard rock and punk music; knows little about fashion or interior design; is not well-traveled; does not hobnob with the gay social elite; has avoided relationships, rather than been promiscuous or hooked on one relationship after another; and who does not work out religiously or have a fit body.I initially reacted to this focus on a select group of gay men by thinking indignantly to myself, "Well this book doesn't apply to me!" Fortunately, I stopped myself with "Don't throw out the baby with the bathwater", and "Maybe you also don't like looking at how hurt and sad and angry you feel?"Pulling myself up short like that helped because I was then able to glean many gems found throughout this book's pages (or on the Audiobook). I not only learned a lot about myself from the book, also learned how to overcome shame and live a more fulfilling life.Two 'truths' that I garnered, which have helped me immensely are:1) Shame-driven motivations have ruled my life, especially:> behaviors designed to numb out pain, e.g., alcohol and other drugs; compulsive sex; avoidance & isolation; and> behaviors driven by a desire for validation, e.g., compulsive work, people-pleasing, and wearing a mask--trying to be who I think someone wants me to be.2) In order to heal shame-based wounds; live with integrity and authenticity; and become the man I want to be, I must not only gain insight into the origins of shame and its impact on my choices and behavior, I must learn and practice *specific skills* designed to break the dysfunctional patterns, and replace them with new ways of perceiving, thinking, and acting. As a result of learning and practicing these skills, I am gradually experiencing more joy, contentment, and inner peace.I gave this book 5 Stars because, although flawed with regard to the narrow range of gay men discussed in the text, everything else in The Velvet Truth rang true, and has given me a pathway + a guidebook to live fully and thrive.

Almost finished -- Just started reading it yesterday. All the facts and figures just boggles my mind at times (being 70-years-old that's not hard to do). How Ms. Henriques ever made sense of this is a major accomplishment.Her writing is almost poetic at times: "... the individual fraud victims, who had believed for too long in this wizard of lies, were on a quest to find the most elusive prize of all: justice.""Most of them began their trek with only the vaguest idea of the terrain ahead. They did not know that some bridges had been washed out. Most tragically, they could not see the crossroads around the bend where at least half of them would be detoured into a labyrinth of bitter fury and frustration."Am very curious as to how the movie portrays this.

I liked this book. The only thing I craved that was missing was more of the why - why, psychologically, did BDM engage in the biggest financial fraud of all time, for so long? There were only bits and pieces of that. And why did a couple of his - I'll call them henchmen - henchmen, play along? One guy, Frank DiPascali, was carefully and expertly fabricating fraudulent statements for BDM for years, but I never understood why - I could only just speculate. Was he getting kickbacks? Was BDM some sort of Rasputin, or Charles Manson, and Frank was a cult member? All I knew was that Frank denied the allegations (in criminal court, where he ultimately pled guilty), and that BDM kept asserting that only he knew. It was a big unanswered question for me, even though it would have been one of the more interesting "stories" within the scandal.It's possible that Diana simply didn't have access to that insight, which I get. And I absolutely appreciated Diana's courage in her conclusions - even in the face of no doubt receiving animosity from BDM's victims for essentially humanizing him in a cautious but instructive way, and further providing insight and humanization for BDM's family members, who likely didn't know what BDM was hiding. Her mastery of the financial products and Wall Street environment is great, and her journalist's discipline and approach made it a solidly researched and written book. Recommended.

Moreover, although many of the bankruptcy and litigation issues are arcane, Henriques is able to translate the legal maneuvering into a highly readable story.Perhaps more interestingly, because the story is less well known, she also dug extensively into Madoff's background, from which she poses an intriguing question: when did the fraud begin? In her book, Henriques admits she's not sure, but speculates it could have begun in the early 1980s or perhaps as early as the 1970s. Madoff has never admitted it began earlier than the 1990s. Henriques's suspicion is bolstered by Madoff's admission that early in his career, in the late 1960s and early 1970s, he engaged in some low-end securities fraud for which he was never caught or prosecuted. He also admitted to helping assist foreign investors evade their own currency and tax laws without any regard for the morality of such conduct. Finally, she notes that in the middle of the 1980s, Madoff faced several squeezes as investors were withdrawing funds unexpectedly. From that, she wonders whether Madoff's money management business was a fraud from its inception, but admits she has no solid proof. Interestingly, however, in a 2012 superseding indictment of five Madoff employees, which was filed after her book came out, the federal government for the first time charged that the Madoff scheme went back to the 1970s.Henriques finishes with a short essay on trust, why investors trusted Madoff, why they should not have, and what the Madoff scandal may do to change investors' minds about understanding the risks they are taking in investing.All in all, a very worthwhile read.

The author told a difficult and painful story with objectivity and sensitivity. It was a hard read. . . in part because of the financial world technicalities with which I am unfamiliar but also because at the end of the day, it still left me wondering - perhaps more than ever - how so many people could be so ignorant, so deluded, so greedy, and/or so immoral as to allow this to happen. I could empathize with the "regular people," whose misplaced trust in the experts left them in financial ruin. The author cites evidence to support that Bernie's sons were not privy to this side of the "family" business. My heart broke for them and for all the known and unknown victims in this debacle. A worthwhile but difficult read.

Like millions of people, I found myself morbidly intrigued by what this man did to so many people. This is an excellent book. The auther did a good job of laying out all the facts, but spun them together in a way that made the book highly readable. Questions are still to be answered. Did Ruth Madoff know what was really happening? Not sure. After reading this, I felt sure that her sons did not, but I still have questions about what Mrs. Madoff knew and when she knew it. This man who ruined so many lives in order to live like a king is a monster. He took not only from wealthy people could withstand their losses, but from many who could not, people like police officers and teachers. He deserved that prison sentence he got. There should be more in there with him.

This book is great for assembly beginners. The author has a great style of writing that is casual, compelling, at times humorous, and most importantly, honest and instructive. What stymies most newcomers is the lack of explanation of details, which is positively essential when learning assembly, due to its fairly arcane nature. This is where the author shines. Before I read this book, I had difficulty with the concept of memory segments, but Step-by-Step provided an easily understood explanation of what they were, what they do, and how to use them. Another essential tool for the aspiring assembly programmer that is explained in this book is DOS's progam DEBUG. The author devotes enough time on this subject so that you, the programmer can actually utilize some of DEBUG's main features. The book also introduces a few of DOS's and the BIOS's system services that are directly available to assembly programs. Each service that the author discusses is thoroughly covered and shouldn't leave anyone dissatisfied.Of course, no book can cover "it all" (except maybe the Good Book). You'll need to buy more after this. Just think of Step-by-Step as a "primer" (you couldn't expect to read and understand War and Peace if you can't understand Run-away Bunny). This book is writen by a 30-year veteren of assembly language (among other languages) and of technology and electronics in general. His knowledge is vast and he understands that imposing that vast knowledge on a beginner all at once would be illogical. So, in the authors own words, this book is intended to help you learn how to learn assembly. I'm sure you've heard it before in other tech-book reviews: "You won't be a/n wiz once you finish reading this book." But you'll at least get out of the starting-gate with a decent grasp of assembly. A cool feature is that the book contains a CD with an excellent FREE assember called NASM, among various other necessities. The newness of the book is also refreshing (published in 2000).I'm rating this book with 5 stars because I really believe that it will get a person of moderate intelligence comfortable with beginning assembly coding and assembling/linking. Of course, if you consider yourself a bit more than moderately intelligent, then perhaps an assembly book other than this one will suit you better.PS- Some prior programming experience would be helpful with your comprehension of the material in this book. What is ABSOLUTELY essential is the FIRM grasp of binary numbers, hexadecimal numbers! Thankfully, the book devotes some time to this topics discussion.

I started a personal campaign to teach myself assembly language, and searched out books that might help. I bought this book because I own a number of "Step-By-Step" books and the blurb sounded good. Unfortunatly, it turned out to be a dissapointment.The author prides himself on the fact that he uses an "unusual" method to teach a hard subject, and equally proud that he will not do a "complete" job. And then proceeds to work on chapter after chapter of thin analogy without actually getting to real assembly programming. Now I'm all for "unusual" methods of teaching, but only when they actually work. Reading this book left me more confused than ever.And of course, to top it off, it's about 10 years old.I really hate to spend more time on this book, but I wanted to express at least a little bit of my opinion. If I would recommend a book, this other one is worth the money. I even found out that ASU uses it as a textbook, and it's cheaper on amazon.Assembly Language for Intel-Based Computers (5th Edition)Additionally, I'd do a google search for winasm, radasm and masm32. All three have wonderful forums to help people learn how to create assembly programs.

Like everyone else I've ever met who's looked into learning assembly, I had a little trouble comprehending how everything fit together. I'd heard wonderful things about Duntemann's last edition of Assembly Language: Step by Step, so I decided to purchase the updated linux version. Duntemann's 600+ page book slowly guides the beginner into an understanding of Assembly. Don't be confused by the book's size - this book will NOT make an expert - perhaps not even an intermediate programmer. Instead, this book teachers the basics of assembly and provides a decent background into the workings of computer memory, the cpu, and other concepts that EVERY programmer should know. This book can't be given a higher recommendation for anyone looking to start in assembly - Duntemann has a way of explaining (and re-explaining) through metaphors that enhance comprehension. Anyone who already has a background in this material will be amazed by the extreme explanations ("a whole CHAPTER on hex and binary! "), but it's really the perfect way to pound the knowledge in. By the end of the book, the reader will know so much more about assembly - and how/why it works. Just don't expect to be a highly skilled professional.

Really enjoyed this book. Was interrupted however and have not completed the course. It is very clear though and very helpful. Some of the other assembly language books require software you may not have, but if you have a PC, you have DOS so you can use this.

Learning assembly language for the first time is often a harrowing experience. It can be greatly worse if you are trying to learn it on your own. For those of you who are trying to do just that with x86 assembler, this is a great starting point. This text opens by covering the basics of arcitecture as well as binary and hexadecimal, giving the future assembly programmer a background in the all-important workings of the computer. While far from a thorough approach of x86 assembly, this book is one of the best introductions possible for independently learning low-level programming.For beginners in low-level programming, I give this 5 stars. For those with previous (non-x86) low-level programming experience, I give this 3 stars (due to its treatment of rudimentary subjects with which they would already be familiar). This text is not recommended for individuals who have had x86 programming experience unless it is to be used as a quick "refresher" on the basics. A suggested follow-up text for this is Peter Abel's IBM PC Assembly Language and Programming (5th Edition).

This is definitely a book to get if you want to learn SQLi from the ground up. Many other IT security related books devote a chapter to SQLi that feels rushed or doesn't fully explain the "in/out's" of SQLi. This books starts with the premise that the reader is completely new to the concept of SQLi. The author easily explains the concept, how to detect it, and how to prevent it in a way that is easy to understand. If you ever heard of the "Crawl, Walk, Run" approach, this book beautifully illustrates it. What I love best is that it gives you easy to follow examples without being wordy or verbose. It isn't a book that will melt your brain with boring material, in fact, it is actually quite fun to read and follow along. Like any book that is fun to follow you will have an easier time remembering the material. The book is split into four sections - undestanding SQL injection (Chapter 1), finding SQL injection (Chapters 2 and 3), exploiting SQL injection (Chapters 4-7), and defending against SQL injection (Chapters 8-10).This book will definitely appeal to all audiences interested in the subject from the pro penetration tester, to the novice, IT security student new to the subject, or a database admin that just wants to write more securely.So if you are debating to find a book about SQLi, look no further and pick this book up.

It covers everything from finding the SQL injection to exploiting the database server. Very well written book and easy to understand. You should have some knowledge of programming, especially knowledge of SQL if you want to read this book. You should know at least one programming language in addition to knowing some basic SQL. Ideally, you will know either PHP, Java, or C#. This is not an intro to sql or intro to programming book. This is not a book on hacking or penetration testing. This is a book on SQL injections and it covers just about anything you can imagine.SQL injections in stored procedures? Yep. SQL injections to gather more information about the database schema? Yep. SQL injections aimed at accessing the server? Yep!As I've said, and I repeat, THIS BOOK IS AWESOME! If you've got any interest at all in hacking web applications, you need to master SQL and SQL injections!

In my search for a Paleo/Mediterranean cookbook, after my doctor prescribed a Mediterranean diet using a Paleo template, I stumbled upon Molly Pearl's cookbook! I'm so very glad to have found this simple yet clearly written and concise cookbook with easy to follow recipes! While not every recipe contains a picture, the vast majority do...and what beautiful pictures they are! Every recipe we have tried thus far have been simply delicious and some of which I have now made numerous times!The recipes we have made so far:Olive Oil Fried Eggs over Arugula: (sounds simple...and it is! Also yummy and satisfying in the morning and a good way to get my son to eat his greens! ;))Fresh Watermelon Salad: Served this along side a fresh bed of greens and the salmon from pg 142Balsamic Cucumbers with Dill: again, simple and the perfect compliment to the Beef Kofta with Pine Nuts on pg 179 and sumac (which I found at Whole Foods)The Classic Greek Salad: My son begs for this salad at least once a week and it's so easy to throw together on a busy weekday, including the dressing that you can throw in a mason jar (as the author suggests), just shake and pour!Tuna Steak with Orange and Fennel Salad: I've made this one a few times now at the request of my family. It's an easy dish to throw together on a hot summer day, since it doesn't require a lot of standing over a hot stove (just sear the tuna for 1-3 minutes!)Fig and Arugula Salad: (a no brainer...but sometimes my brain needs to be reminded of these simple meals!)Sole with Fresh Tomato Salad: I've had numerous request to make this one over and over again.Shaved Asparagus Carbonara: A weeknight delight! The hardest part to this recipe was making the asparagus ribbons and even that wasn't that hard with a mandoline!Shrimp and Basil Linguine: Not to sound like a broken record...but again, simple yet delicious! I purchased pre-spiraled zucchini noodles which made it even easier to throw together on a busy weeknight!Whole Roast Chicken with Root Vegetables: sweet potatoes, celery root, rutabaga, and carrots fill you up in this perfectly roasted chicken with crispy skinMoroccan Chicken: The spices in this dish made my whole house smell wonderful!!!Roasted Peaches with Nuts (pistachios) and Honey: Perfect over some quality whole milk Greek yogurt (if you can tolerate dairy) or coconut milk ice creamFlatbread (grain free): The real deal!!!There are two meal plans. One for Spring/Summer and one for Fall/Winter. I love this idea of seasonal meal plans, utilizing fresh produce based on the seasons. If I had to make one suggestion, it would be to include the recipe page numbers in the menu plans. The meal plans provide a shopping list for all the ingredients you would need for the week. One thing to note: the meal plans are based on 2 adults. While most of the recipes sufficiently feed our family of three, you will want to consider doubling the recipes to accommodate a larger family...which would not be that difficult to do based on the simplicity of the ingredients.This is not an overly complicated or lavish cookbook, but that's why I like it! The information in the beginning of the book is straightforward and not overwhelming. And I've only scratched the surface of this book! You'll also find recipes for Paleo crepes with lemon curd, Coconut Yogurt, Fattoush, grain free Porridge, Tortilla Espagnole, Zucchini-Date Breakfast Bread, Paleo pastas (using various vegetables), Focaccia, Roasted Red Pepper Hummus, salads, antipasto, soups, and even treats like, Dark Chocolate Paprika Cake and Strawberry-Mint Granita.I love the concept of merging the Mediterranean and Paleo diets together. I think both diets have a number of health benefits and as people discover how good they feel eating and living this merged lifestyle, I'm sure there will be more of a demand for books like this! I only know of one other Paleo Mediterranean cookbook. I own that one too, but did not have the success with the recipes from that popular cookbook as I have had with this cookbook! In my opinion this cookbook is the better purchase and if you are seeking Mediterranean recipes while staying committed to your Paleo lifestyle, then THIS is the cookbook for you!

This book is the answer to a lifelong search for the type of eating that avoids grains, beans, lentils, sugars, and allows for all types of food sensitivities, food allergies, and food aversions. The combo Mediterranean and Paleo is a winner for individual biochemical makeups that can properly metabolize the foods allowed. Love the season designated menus with accompanying grocery lists. It is a colorful book with easy to follow directions, good for those who don't like to cook much to the very great cooks.

Love this cookbook. Great for cancer diets that are low carb.

The strength of the author's analysis is in debunking virtually every theory that has been advanced to explain the airplane's disappearance. The weakness of it is in providing his own thesis. He does such a wonderful job destroying the theories of others that he is left with no possibility to advance himself other than one that is both commonplace and, honestly, downright lame. It is as easily destroyed using his own analytical tools as all the others. So what has he proved at the end of the day? Mostly that the plane's' disappearance is...a mystery.

I bought this book because the author is a pilot himself with an impressive resume. The book however was a disappointment. Firstly, the actual readable content is quite low. The text size is quite large and only takes up 75% of the page. Which leads me to my next annoyance, if the author was struggling to fill its pages - he left out many things that could've been expanded upon. No history of the 777 is mentioned. Often times he would explain how his A380 had larger wings or blah blah blah. We get it - you flew the A380. His conclusion is weak at best and when you finish the book - you're still left wondering what the best guess is. It's not a terrible book - but for the price, you're really not getting anything new. I'd wait until the price comes down considerably in the used section if you're still interested.

This is the most rational book I have read on the loss of MH370 and I have read a lot of them. I am a retired aerospace engineer and I agree with the logic that James Nixon brings to the book. The theory of the crash included in the book makes a lot of sense. It is simply and clearly written, easy to follow and understand. I particularly like the idea of mini cameras all over the aircraft - I would add some to the exterior of the aircraft,looking at engines, landing gear, and control surfaces.

If you accept the premise that the loss of MH370 was an accident, then the theory of an uncontained fire in the electronics bay beneath the cockpit makes the most sense to me.

Fascinating book. I loved his humor and and analytical mind. I hope the aviation industry considers some of his suggestions to improve things for the pilots and safety of everyone who gets on a plane.

Excellent book, easy for this layman to understand. I highly recommend this, especially for those of us who are nervous passengers.

I am a scientist by training and have never flown or been interested in flying a plane. What I enjoy about the authors writing is that it's logical and that he uses facts to support every one of his thoughts. After each chapter, he recaps the important parts of this section. Until the flight recorder is recovered from MH370, no one can be sure why the jet went down; nevertheless, I would bet that the authors analysis will be pretty close to correct. I agree with the author that most analysis of disasters that take place on network news is worthless and almost always wrong. I really enjoyed the authors writing style and will look into other books by this author.

A forthright no hysteria professional analysis of the flight of MH370 from an experienced senior airline captain leading to a set of conclusions which cannot be faulted or ignored. All this with a minimum of jargon or technical hyper-analysis. The argument for the continued search for MH370 is critical to all travelling public as are the suggested actions needed to avoid it happening again. This book is long enough to get all the facts and short enough to get the picture in one sitting.
