Going into this book I knew very little about the four minute mile except that Bannister accomplished it first. I had never heard of Landy or Santee, and had never heard of this book. Amazon recommended it to me and I decided on a whim to give it a shot.Running is, in my opinion, a fairly boring sport to watch. And the stories portrayed here can quite easily be told in a dull manner. But worry not: Bascomb is a brilliant writer and the tale he spins in these pages makes me want to become a track and field fan. I found the build up thrilling, the back stories captivating, and the training details thoroughly interesting. No dull moments whatsoever.This book is well written, well researched, and flawlessly executed. I completely enjoyed it and highly recommend it to anyone interested in running, sport, history, or some combination of the three.

Histories and biographies (not autobiographies) are my favorite genre of books.The PERFECT MILE by Neal Bascomb recounts the 1950’s epic chase across 3 continents by 3 remarkable runners of the once presumed impossible 4 minute mile.There are many ways to read this book — history, Roger Bannister’s training methods, mental fortitude,, amateur athletics crazy rules, etc. All are good and credible reads.However, in this book review, I read the book as a template for CHARACTER — notably, the character of the secondary protagonist John Landy.No matter how your read this book — READ IT. I am a runner and I love it. (Though that hasn’t always been the case.) So I was naturally interested in this book since it’s all about runners. But there is also historical significance in learning more about this event along with what was going on in the world at the time it took place. I was fascinated by the view of amateur and professional athletics in the 1950’s, and how much athletics have changed since then.This book also introduced me to true heroes and role models of our day, and the writing is superb. The author paints pictures with words of people and events so that they come alive and are so relatable. I was just as nervous and engaged reading about the races in this book as I was while reading the Hunger Games.And when it comes down to it, this book is less about running and more about working hard with what life has given us to make something of ourselves and to contribute to the world in which we live. The 3 main running figures in the book sum it up best:John Landy: “Running gave me discipline and self-expression…It has all the disappointments, frustrations, lack of success, and unexpected success, which all reproduce themselves in the bigger play of life. It teaches you the ability to present under pressure. It teaches you the importance of being enthusiastic, dedicated, focused. All of these are trite statements, but if you actually have to go through these things as a young man, it’s very, very important.”Wes Santee: “Hard work pays off. You have to be just as disciplined to run a business as you do to train for an athletic event. You have to eat right, still have to get up early and work more than others.”Roger Bannister: “Sport is about not being wrapped up in cotton wool. Sport is about adapting to the unexpected and being able to modify plans at the last minute. I've recently begun the acclaimed Unbroken by Laura Hillenbrand. While the opening scene hints at the hardships coming up for Louis Zamperini, the hero of the story, the first part is about his running career as a young man and the quest for the four minute mile. What serendipity when I came across The Perfect Mile by Neal Bascomb as a Kindle promotion. I'm no athlete; sports on TV are boring and sports reporters act like a big game has the global significance of the Second Coming. However, Bascomb introduces us to three runners from three different countries and backgrounds. The thing they had in common, besides physical ability and determination is that they were amateur athletes at a time when the rapid adoption of television was bringing massive sponsorship dollars into all sports and rendering "gentlemen scholars" obsolete. One runner was going to medical school - doing a residency and course work - while training. Another was running multiple events for his college while a full time student, and the third was also in college, but in Australia where track events had very little institutional support. The 1950s, when The Perfect Mile takes place, bridges the gap between the purer amateurism in the 1930s of Zamperini and today's world where "amateur" is really a technicality (although at the college level the issues raised regarding how organizers profit and the students are like serfs are unchanged).I gave The Perfect Mile four stars because it got my interest from the beginning and held it by showing what each competitor had to go through in order to run his fastest mile, without the kind of detail that gets boring. Bascomb had access to the principals, and it gives each of their story a solidity that doesn't come from collecting newspaper clippings alone.Anyone who runs will love The Perfect Mile, but it's more a cultural history than a sports biography. And of course, if you read Unbroken and want to know more about breaking the four minute barrier for the mile, you will also enjoy The Perfect Mile.

I'm a native speaker, bought it for someone else. it must not have been proofread by a native speaker. Many things that are not accurate. or typos

It is very good. This books helps you with sentence structure, particles and variations of verbs. You will learn helpful phrases and be able to build your own conversational statements and questions. Hint: Get a English/Japanese dictionary to use along with this book and you should be able to converse and write simple exchanges.The book also has the basic hiragana and katakana basics if you are reading this book without getting your syllabaries down. Although, as a beginner using several types of educational materials, I was a bit annoyed by the errors. Someone who is fluent in both Japanese and English should have proofed this prior to publication. Knocked it down by reducing to 4 stars instead of 5.

Just got back from a trip to Tokyo. I used this book for about a week before I left and it helped immensely. The BEST thing about this book, is that the author writes the Romanji AND the phonetic sound (i.e. How the word should be spoken). For example the Japanese word for "Good Morning" is written in romanji as "Ohayo gozaimasu", then the author puts the phonetic spelling next to it as (oh-hai-yoe go-zai-mahss) so the reader can pronounce it correctly. This is really really useful and something I wish all language books would adopt. This is a thin book (for better or worse) and fits comfortably in a back pocket. I had this in my back pocket throughout my trip, even forgetting that it was there.The only negative I have about the book, is that its horrible for actual reference. The words in the back of the book are just extra words to learn and nothing you learned from the previous pages. So if you forgot how to say "Hot coffee, please" then you have to remember what page that phrase was on, because there is nothing to tell you where it is in the book and you cant even look up the word "coffee". It was mentioned once in the book and you must now remember it! Would have been nice if the book had colored tabs and was a bit more organized.Great book overall though and a must buy for Japanese beginners.

The book has a simple structure that builds on itself. It does not teach you Japanese but it does give you the basic structure of how to say things and usable words. If you are using this book as a travel aid then perhaps memorizing is not possible but making notes on what is important to you will help. You can even script what to say or ask in different common situations.

I bought two books at the same time, I'm using this one with another book Japanese Made Easy and i'm finding that one much easier and more sensible. I will try to come back some other time to add more detail to this review. Suffice to say that i think maybe the idea of this one is great but the reality is more complex.

I just got back from a two-week vacation in Japan, where I used several books in an attempt to improve my miniscule knowledge of Japanese. This book was the best of a good lot; the word selection is excellent, and the book teaches sufficient grammar almost effortlessly; most important, it's small enough to finish fairly quickly. Of course, it's only a start--for a second book, I recommend "Japanese Made Easy" by Tazuko Ajiro Monane.Even if you thoroughly learn the content of this book, though, you still want to carry around a phrase book for those (frequent) times when 100 words just isn't enough. De Mente's book will teach you enough Japanese so that you can make simple sentences without looking up every word, but you will still need words not in this book.[Minor complaints: he spells the word "o" (pronounced "o") with the old spelling "wo" throughout the book, for no apparent reason. Also, an index would have been nice.]In short, the book is superb for its one intended purpose, which is teaching a very basic, careful selection of Japanese--an "instant" introduction.

There are exactly 100 words in the book that are used in a variety of examples and ways. It's a great quick and dirty way to dive right into Japanese and walk out with some basic vocabulary. There are some small paragraphs on grammar usage, pronunciation, and other details to the language but for the most part it's just words and phrases.This isn't the first time I've studied some Japanese and most of the basic words I've got a good handle on but I'm finding this book to be a great resource for solidifying the basics. I would say that this is a great pre-trip book, something you go through and memorize before a trip but leave home once you depart. For the trip itself I've purchased a proper phrasebook-Frommer's Japanese PhraseFinder & Dictionary (Frommer's Phrase Books) - and while being more textbook like then this one it does include a more comprehensive japanese/english phrase dictionary. I'll be traveling with that one but using this one to get some basic words and phrases under my belt.

I speak a little Japanese so I found the book redundant in learning much. But I really bought this for my husband who has practically no clue to the language. We'll be traveling to Japan in July and I thought this would come in handy for him if he wasn't with me to translate or to communicate. We are going over it/studying it together and I have added index tabs to sections so that it'll be easier for him to find a certain subject. For instance, restaurant, hotel, train station, etc. It's has the basics so we're happy with it.
