Should this review be about this book or about the concept of tiny homes? The book, I guess, because this is Amazon, not a private blog, but it is hard to disengage the two. I live a lot of my time in hotels and short-stay apartments (I am writing from one now) and I know that I can be comfortable in a small space, but I would not like to call one of these Tiny Homes, my home. Why? Because I like physical books, I cook with pots and pans, and I need to go to the toilet in the middle of the night. This last is the deal breaker. No way can I, with a bursting bladder, crawl down a ladder from a sleeping loft to stagger outside to the outhouse. Nor are lofts safe for people who enjoy alcohol or suffer from balance disorders. Not all tiny houses use lofts or outhouses, of course, but the problem remains that living in a tiny space and pursuing a serious hobby are mutually exclusive. Storing your gear in a shed is cheating.So while I can appreciate the aesthetics and cleverness of many of these house (some of which are spectacular), and I would gladly take some of them as holiday rentals, I just don't think that tiny houses meet the needs of an aging population and I think that the enthusiasm for them will eventually peter out. Trying to change the sheets on a bed that is crammed against a wall gets old really fast.So back to the book review. I agree with several other reviewers that much of the material here is not original. I would not buy this book for myself or a friend because the same info and photos are available free on the web.I received a review copy of "Tiny Homes: Simple Shelter" by Lloyd Kahn (Shelter Publications) through NetGalley.com.

This has a plethora of great photos and stories from many different styles of tiny homes. It is a great book to generate ideas and conversation. With that being said, here are some things about the book that you should know before buying:- This book is not intended to be a technical account of architectural styles - don't buy it if that's what you're looking for.- This book does not provide detailed plans or building tips.- As others have brought up, the photos in the book are not the highest resolution, but this did not detract from my enjoyment. Honestly, it is tough to notice if you are just flipping through.- I have never had a problem with the quality of binding or paper.To address some of the other reviewers who were wary of the reviews because they all mentioned the name of the author or publishing company: Lloyd Kahn is a well-known guy in the tiny house movement. I do not know him personally, but I saw him speak once (after buying this book), and I imagine that a lot of reviewers have seen him speak, resulting in a feeling of familiarity leading them to use his name in a review. I don't think it is a big deal. He has written and published a lot of books, so his name and the name of his publishing company coming up in reviews shouldn't be a surprise.Overall, buy this book if you want to look at a lot of cool pictures of tiny homes. Do not buy this book if you want a technical account of the architectural or building practices associated with the homes. It's a great book if you're looking for the former.

"Tiny Homes" is a very interesting book loaded with pictures of tiny homes (defined as 500 square feet or less). There is a wide variety of building material used, excellent pictures, and interesting side stories about the people who built them or live in them.To be frank, I have no real interest in living in something this small (probably) but truly enjoy looking at them to see just what is possible. I have also enjoyed the books by Sarah Susanka ("Creating the Not So Big House" is just one of her books). My husband and I are at odds about home size but this book has allowed us to have some useful discussion about what is next for us. It has gotten my creative juices flowing a bit and has also come in helpful when thinking about downsizing my mother-in-law to a small apartment.My only real complaints about the book are two-fold. One: the working definition of a tiny house is one under 500 sf but almost all the pictures are of homes more in the 250 sf range. I can't imagine living in 250 sf but can picture 500 sf - just not enough of this slightly larger home for my desire. Two: I would have liked to have seen more floor plans. The pictures are great, but having a floor plan would help be better visualize what I am seeing.Even with those two quibbles it is a wonderful, picture-packed book that was well worth the money I spent. I am keeping it on my family room coffee table for perusal and inspiration!

After buying and reading this book I was impressed by Mr. Kahn's efforts in collecting such a variety of photos which does offer a somewhat comprehensive review of the topic. However, I too feel that it would have been more helpful if his work had been more up to date and covered the growing modern trend in small/tiny homes especially in Japan and Europe. As it stands it does feel dated and isn't as useful a guide as it could be, especially considering that in most parts of this country, more and more stringent building codes make many of these structures implausable as real alternatives to standard "big" homes on the market today. But it is a fun read and can inspire the reader to delve into the subject further, which I feel offers an important solution to not only the problem of rising home costs and the accompanying overburdensome mortgages, but also a great green alternative which is vital to this and future societies.

Catherine Barsotti and Robert Johnston --- husband and wife --- give thoughtful Christians a book full of tools to help them view select movies (33 in all; the oldest released in 1982) through a theological or philosophical lens.FINDING GOD IN THE MOVIES starts with an informative introduction that discusses the film genre and theological approaches to film. What makes a good film? "Head, gut, and heart. The best movies will engage the whole person." How does a viewer find God in the movies? "Unpack the story.... What is more primary in the way the story is shaped? (1) Is it the plot...? (2) Is it the characters...? (3) Is it the point of view, where a story is given value by the perspective of the narrator(s)...? Or (4) is it the atmosphere...?...Concentrate your critical attention on where the filmmakers have centered their attention. By doing this, you will prove a more receptive viewer of the story and perhaps the Story."Each of the 33 movie-chapters starts with a two- or three-page "synopsis and theological reflection" --- a review. So let me start by saying I’m an enthusiastic believer in Intuitive Eating. For me, this workbook was long awaited. I have the book and have read it cover to cover, but I was always hoping for a supplemental workbook to help readers put the principles into action. My dream finally came true when I found out about this workbook. But then I had to wait for what seemed like forever for the workbook to be released (I had pre-ordered on Amazon of course). Now that I have it, I just can’t stop recommending it to people. It’s honestly changed my life and the lives of my clients. (I’ve recently ordered two more copies and contemplating ordering a third because I keep remembering more people in my life that I want to give it to). This workbook, in conjunction with the Intuitive Eating book, is essential for someone who is a chronic dieter, obsessed with losing weight, food, eating, calories, or anything related to food and body image. Love, love, love!

As someone who has spent over 20 years dieting and hating my body, I absolutely LOVE this book so far! I haven't finished it, but I have read the original book twice already and I feel that this is a great supplement. It provides a common sense approach. There's more to it than simply telling myself that I can eat what I want, but instead I am being trained to listen to my body's cues and to provide self care. I really like the idea of looking into what causes me to overeat or eat compulsively and learning how to heal my broken relationship with food and my body. I also like the idea that I can set aside linear thinking, which is typically encouraged by dieting. I'm not expected to start and end at a certain place, but instead I feel empowered to revisit various aspects of the process as needed, with the end result being the ability to appropriately nourish myself without guilt. I am also learning to be patient with the process, as I have gained and lost the same 15-20 lbs for the last 20 years and I have had to put weight loss on the back burner. I haven't been on a scale in over a month, and I was getting on the scale every day for months! Since starting this workbook, I have felt in=credible freedom, since I haven't really been all that worried about my weight. I have already recommended this workbook to someone at my church and I am hoping to be able to share it with other people as time goes on.

As a certified intuitive eating counselor, this workbook was required for me to be able to complete my training. It it is the perfect complement to Tribole and Resch's Intuitive Eating book, and I recommend it to many of my clients. It really takes the ten principles of intuitive eating and makes them personal to you. The worksheets and suggested exercises help you really dig down inside to figure out why you eat what/when/how you do, and it provides you with direction for next steps to take.Intuitive eating is not another diet or set of rules and restrictions. It is getting back to the intuition and wisdom you were born with to make peace with food and trust your body. Both evidence-based and sporting a validated assessment, intuitive eating really can help you enjoy life again!

This book is not for everyone (I don't think). However, I LOVE it! To be honest, I've felt defeated and irritated with food because I have done one diet after another, even diets that weren't "diets" but were more lifestyle changes and nothing has made me happy or stable. The thing with this book is you have to read it in it's entirety and take things slow. Food, dieting, your weight, all of it can cause some real mental and emotional issues, and this book takes the pressure off. It gets long at some points, but overall I'm doing way better with food than I have in a long time.

I am only halfway through this workbook and I can already tell this is going to be life changing! If you are totally honest about the answers you give to the questions laid out for you in this workbook, you see exactly what you've (I've ) been doing wrong for so many years around food! I have been on every "diet" for at least 30 years. I always thought that I needed to be "on a diet" or I wasn't "trying" hard enough to lose this extra weight. I've never REALLY just listened to my body and eaten what it wants and how much it wants. Which turns out is far LESS than I was ever eating before. No more mindless eating. My mind and body are in sync! I can't wait to see what else I learn about myself! I purchased the Hard Cover and would recommend this because there are a lot of writing exercises!

I recommend this work book to anyone who has any kind of disordered eating! This is the way to have your cake and eat it too! (Pun intended caringly!) These authors are both Registered Nutritionists and awesome as well! Read their bios!Their book and workbook have helped me chuck out all negative comments and ignore the rubbish I hear from social media and commercial diets.I lift weights and love cardio and I am now in the best physical condition of my life! For anyone who is struggling with food and is now thinking of going on a diet please get this workbook the Intuitive Eating book and consult with a nutritionist! It costs a lot less than commercial diets!I love this workbook and I am so grateful to these authors as well as my own intuitive eating nutritionist for bringing t this wonderful approach to food!

This book is a miracle and a true gift. If I could get one for each of my friends I would. It has helped me break down my old diet habits, old food rules, and has allowed me to have tools to tackle every obstacle I have experienced on my intuitive eating journey. It is hard work, and takes time. But I am able to listen to my hunger, slow down while eating, and really listen to my body. Very inspiring. Some of the challenges Diana Nyad went through to achieve her dream were unbelievable! What a warrior woman. From her childhood, where sexual abuse turned her into an overachiever, to her mid-sixties, where she has one more chance to achieve her lifelong dream, Nyad inspires, yet she's very human. She is introspective, suffers emotionally, wonders about herself, but in the end, gets on with it.This is a story not just of super-human athletic accomplishment, but also of rebirth at an age when conventional culture writes you off. For example, Nyad reflects on how she feels in her sixties as opposed to forty years earlier: "I'm not as sensitive or delicate emotionally, either, so I suppose the mental calm and perspective that comes with age contributes to being more robust in this new incarnation of my athletic self...In my sixties, I am far more patient, with myself and my crew..."Nyad also talks about the fact that she is atheistic, disliking the slogan, "It was meant to be." She says, "I learned through my own life's journey that one makes oneself a champion...(if 'it was meant to be'), then where is hope? Where does will come in? Where is the inspiration to change and better oneself?" I enjoyed her story, and felt inspired and motivated after reading it.

With the qualification that I've read more fantasy than sci-fi, I find this book unique. I certainly have not read a book like this before.Structurally, it is certainly different. It deliberately shifts between points of view and first and third person often and oftentimes without warning. This makes it difficult to identify the speaker at times, but if you can get comfortable with the complex structure and just settle into the dialogue and the story, there is a payoff.'The Female Man' presents four (five really, but the fifth is a sort of unofficial narrator) archetypal women living at different points on an imaginary timeline. Having these women living in the same world but at different times shows how society's expectations and role assignments color a female's options and choices.Structurally, it deliberately shifts between points of view and between first and third person often and oftentimes without warning. It is not always easy to identify whose voice is speaking sometimes. But if you can get comfortable with the complex structure and just settle into the dialogue and the story, there is a payoff.Joanna is an ambitious female whose skill at her job and being 'one of the boys' allows her to assimilate into a male-dominated workforce.Jeannine's tragedy is that she has come to see herself only as a reflection of a man. As a result, her life's goal is to attract a man. Her thoughts, words and actions are gauged according to how it furthers that goal.Janet is from Whileaway, an all-female society after all men were wiped out by disease. Though this seems to be presented as the utopian society, it actually highlights its flaws-- for all its independence, it's not quite ideal in Whileaway. Something is lost when the presence and uniqueness of each gender is absent and not celebrated.Jael is an assassin in the future where men and women are engaged in an actual protracted and violent war. The conflict is so protracted neither side really has no idea of the nature of the other gender.Sometimes, in the need to distinguish the unique aspects of each female, Russ almost makes her characters two-dimensional or caricatures. In retrospect, there might have been a need to skirt that line because each of the four needed to firmly represent a particular problematic aspect of femalehood.This is not quite an enjoyable read but it is certainly an interesting, thought-provoking and insightful one. It deals with a serious matter and treats it seriously. But it is not without humor occasionally injected in the discourse. I think the takeaway from this book is this: Expectations can mold and shape each female until society's expectations are all that's left of a woman' s self-worth, identity and goals.It doesn't have much of a story arch but I think it was sacrificed at the altar of dialogue to explain the female plight. Considering the year it was written, I would describe it as a book with an agenda. The strategic and frequent stream of consciousness commentary is certainly an indication. Indeed, one auto-commentary says that when the book becomes irrelevant, it would mean freedom and victory.

The book that wrote the book as far as feminist sci-fi goes. Published in 1975, it traces the lives of four different women living on four different worlds -- worlds where the lives of women are very different. The novel follows what happens as these women begin to come in contact. It may be a little dated now, but it it is still worth reading on its own merits. Russ is a tough and very funny writer.

I am a woman in my twenties, I have lived in rich developed countries all my life and have never had to fight for my basic rights as a woman. After reading 'The Female Man' I was shocked to realise how little some aspects of gender roles and stereotypes based on them have changed, all around the world. The reality which Joanna, author and character, faced are still an issue to many women today. We have made progress but there is still a lot ahead. This book made me realise that. I see myself as a woman differently than I did before. I would advise women everywhere, of all ages to read this book. I wish someone had given me this to read when I was 13 and reading romance novels. I know that if I have a daughter she will read this before she reads about princes on white horses.

The writing style used in this book was very interesting and took some thought (not necessarily easy to follow)- I appreciated and enjoyed it. I also saw it as a great way to underscore the connection of the characters. It was interesting to read this book, written in 1974, in view of today's politics and world events. Like any good science fiction writer, Russ has moments of prescience and moments when, I felt, she was restricted by her anger.

This study offers striking data I've never seen before for the hypothesis that Northerners, including many abolitionists, were as hostile or more hostile to blacks than were most Southern whites. Dattel's detailed analysis of Northern legal restrictions on black residency and voting was astonishing evidence for the proposition that what Northerners mainly wanted from abolition was either (a) to evict blacks completely from the U.S., which couldn't be done until they were "free" or (b) to guarantee that they remained forever in the South, as quasi-slaves. This helps to explain why, after the Civil War, and the relegation of blacks to second-class citizenship, Northerners seemed to lose interest almost completely in black rights. A major piece of historical revisionism.

Author Gene Dattel takes the tragedy of slavery and economics of cotton production and weaves an engrossing story of enormous importance even today. He examines the origins of the humble cotton plant and its horrific intertwining with slavery; its astounding importance in international trade and the true economic origins of the Civil War. He places blame fairly and all round, no section of country was blameless here, in fact the North made enormous profits on the production of cotton and the transportation and sale of slaves.The writer's style is interesting and very comprehensible, I am awed by his ability to give a tragic human face to such dry economic data. You will never look at a cotton item the same way again I promise you.

Being a proud fifth-generation Southerner, I thought that I fully understood why the Civil War was fought. Most of my understanding was based upon the influence of society and culture within which I grew up. Although none of my family were flag flying Confederates, there was very much pride in being a Southerner and having ancestors who fought for the Confederacy.After reading this book, I honestly believe that I better understand why the Southerners did what they did. Within my lifetime I have been told over and over that the war was fought over the issue of slavery. As this book shows, slavery was at the root of the war. The primary issue of the war, however, was pure economics.I had always accepted blame for the war as a Southerner. I felt that the Northern influence of slavery was insignificant or nonexistent. I was wrong. Just as the masses of Southerners were not the cause of the war, nor were the masses of the Northerners the cause of the war. Both North and South, it seems from this book, a relatively small number from the "United States" had the production of cotton paramount in their minds and their lives. It was all about MONEY. No cotton, no money. No money, no cotton. No slaves, no cotton. No slaves, no money. I really believe that it is that simple and this book led me to that conclusion.I highly recommend this book to any citizen of the United States of America. I believe that having read this book, we can better understand our history. Maybe we can even prevent repeating bad history.My thanks to the author in this extremely fine work. Although this was not an "easy" book to read, it should be read from cover to cover.

The gap between what we are told about slavery in school and what really happened, why it happened, and how it affects us today is vast and wide. This book does a great job of filling in some of the gap. We need more books like this so the American people can heal from this awful period in our history. Until we know the truth, we are stuck in the past. I am the president of an hereditary society call Sons and Daughters of the United States Middle Passage ([...]) and we encourage accurate and complete information about the institution of slavery in the US and I am happy to recommend this book.

Outstanding book on the facets of slavery and cotton---and the impact of cotton economically. There are many surprises in this book and I thought that the author did an outstanding job of making what some might think would be a boring subject into an extraordinary work.

Published 2011, including answers re Federal offices appropriate to that year, and so, out-of-date. The 100 Questions are in Spanish/English but the book does have a couple of sections that are not bi-lingual. Instructions for Reading Vocabulary and Writing Vocabulary, as well as the selected words, are only in English; I suppose it could be assumed that the student could refer to the rest of the book to identify the words, but translation of the instructions would be helpful.
