It is very easy to blame the Holocaust on specific German characteristics. It is easy to believe the perpetrators were all goose-stepping SS-fanatic caricatures from Central Casting. The truth is more disturbing. The thesis of this book is that ordinary men can be turned into mass-murderers given the right circumstances. That is an important lesson. An unfortunate conclusion much of the world appeared to draw from the World War 2 experience was that genocide is a peculiarly German affliction. This induced an unwillingness to effectively combat the many instances of attempted genocide large and small, since 1945 (Rwanda, Bosnia, Cambodia ... the list is long and depressing). Hopefully an awareness of the terrible capacity for slaughter in all people will make us a little bit more alert and careful.

Humbling and fascinating look at what has happened during the Holocaust, something to reminds us that not everyone who perpetrates monstrous acts is, inherently, a monster: One need not be born a monster to become one, and if we arrogantly ignore that fact we risk repeating these same mistakes. This should be required reading in schools, if you were to ask me. I cannot recommend it enough.

Excellent read, used this book alongside Snyder's Bloodlands Bloodlands: Europe Between Hitler and Stalin as textbooks for a course on World War II in Eastern Europe. Browning's highly sourced/researched book shows the complicity of German Police Battalions, Hiwis, Poles, and the Wehrmacht in war crimes committed by the Nazis.

It seems to me that we in the West are like men in a cavern, out of which lead many paths, none signposted. Some paths lead to bright futures, but other paths lead to terrible ones, among them those where, once again as we did not so very long ago, we slaughter each other over ideology. And the way back is closed, so we must choose one path forward. The service of this book is that it illustrates Solzhenitsyn’s dictum, that the line between good and evil runs through every human heart. Thus, reflecting upon this book may help us choose the correct exit from the cavern, and to that end, it is worth bearing the unease that comes over us when we read books like this. This book, a staple of Holocaust studies for twenty-five years, has recently risen to fresh prominence due to repeated mentions of it by Canadian psychologist, and superstar, Jordan Peterson. His focus on the book arises from his own decades-long study of evil regimes, and his thought on how we, you and I, would really react if we lived under an actual such regime. Peterson’s basic point is that we are deluding ourselves if we think we would be heroes; the vast majority of us would fall somewhere on the scale of cooperation with evil. "Ordinary Men" shows that principle in application, in the history of a group of German men who saw militarized police service in Poland during World War II.Christopher Browning’s focus is on a “reserve police” (Ordnungspolizei) battalion, Number 101. This battalion consisted of roughly five hundred men and was composed mostly of working class men from Hamburg. Very few had any Nazi political background; most, to the extent they had political views, were probably Social Democrats. They were not soldiers; they were nationalized paramilitary police, of a type not found in America, but common in Europe, then and now. Basically, they were a combination of police force and National Guardsmen; not eligible, for the most part, for regular military service, due to age or some other reason, but frequently used to support operations in areas where the German military had conquered. What was special about this battalion was not its composition, or its actions, which were roughly the same as several similar battalions. Rather, it’s that we can know a lot of what these men actually did, which is not the case for most such units, lost among the fog of war and the desire to conceal the past. In the 1960s the German authorities conducted and transcribed, as part of a criminal investigation, extensive interviews with all the surviving Battalion 101 members they could find. Apparently this was one of the few battalions whose membership list was extant at that time, hence the focus on this battalion. It was these court records to which Browning, in the late 1980s, was able to gain access (though he was forbidden from revealing actual names except for those few men actually convicted of crimes, so he uses pseudonyms throughout), and which he used to construct what is part history and part psychological analysis. In more recent years additional such data has been mined and published, but Browning was the first to conduct a study of this type. He is very cautious in his approach, noting that no individual’s testimony can be taken at face value, but claiming, I think accurately, that by judicious and open-minded examination of the mass of testimony, triangulating claims against each other and against known history, a great deal can be determined with a high degree of certainty. The relevant area here is Poland in 1941 and 1942. Reserve Battalion 101 did not operate in Russia, but other similar battalions did, participating after Hitler’s invasion in 1941 in the rounding up, and increasingly frequent organized murder, of Jews in locations like Minsk. Many such battalions ended up pressed into frontline fighting, though, and the Germans fairly quickly transferred killing duties to locally recruited elements, who were for the most part only too happy to help out, unlike, as we will see, some of the reserve battalion’s policemen. Battalion 101, however, continued its behind-the-lines focus throughout the war, never serving as a fighting military unit.Beginning in 1940, Battalion 101 was used to resettle Poles (mostly not Jews) in Western Poland, around Łódź. This was deportation, but not killing or transport to death camps (which did not exist in 1940). At the end of 1940, the battalion took up guard duties at the Łódź ghetto, into which the 160,000 Jews of Łódź had been crammed. Again, this did not involve killing, though it involved mistreatment and dehumanization of Jews, if not by the battalion’s own men, then by other Nazis involved in guard duties. In mid-1941, the battalion returned to Hamburg and was functionally dissolved and re-formed; it these mostly newly enrolled men on whom Browning’s book focuses.Battalion 101’s direct involvement in massacres began in July 1942, as the Final Solution got into full swing. The first massacre was in the Polish village of Józefów, where the battalion was ordered to collect the roughly 1,800 Jews living there; to shoot women, children and old people on the spot, and ship out male Jews suitable for slave labor to Lublin. The battalion’s commandant, Major Wilhelm Trapp, gave a speech to the men in which he expressed some distress and said that men would not be punished for asking for guard or transport duty. A handful took advantage of the offer; the rest, in a highly disorganized, ad hoc, fashion, trucked Jews from the town, marched them into the nearby woods, and chaotically shot them in batches at point-blank range. (Here, and throughout the book, the fate of children is somewhat opaque—they must have been killed, but nobody, even Browning, seems to really want to talk about the details.) During the killing, some more, maybe ten percent to twenty percent, of the battalion’s men made themselves scarce, either by hiding or simply moving about with apparent purpose, but taking advantage of the confusion to not participate directly in the killing. Most of the men, however, participated to the end; when they returned to barracks, many were shaken, and alcohol was provided, but there was no collective pushback against what they had done.In August, Battalion 101 assisted in collecting Jews from various villages, for transportation to Treblinka, collecting them and packing them into the infamous cattle cars. Many Jews were shot during these operations, but killing Jews wasn’t the immediate goal, and local auxiliary forces (so-called Hiwis) did most of the actual killing. Then, in the fall, the battalion was directly involved in several more mass shootings ordered from above. (Who did the ordering is lost to history, as with so many things in war, and the Germans who organized the Final Solution were keen to avoid records, not so much for fear of punishment in this life, but because they thought the masses of Germans should not know what had been done.) These later shootings were more organized, since techniques had been learned and practiced, and, more importantly, men within the battalion had risen to positions of authority who either did not mind directing such work, or positively enjoyed it.The mass of men in the battalion had gotten used to carrying out their orders. Those who objected, of whom Browning profiles several, and who may have been as many as ten percent of the total, were the target of strong social pressure but were not punished, and the most vociferous objectors were ultimately transferred back to units based in Germany. More shootings and deportation followed, along with “Jew hunts” for those who had gone into hiding or become, or joined, partisans. The final killing in which the battalion participated was the massive killing in the fall of 1943, the “Harvest Festival” massacres, in which Heinrich Himmler ordered the coordinated extermination of the Jews in Lublin work camps. (While Browning does not mention it, the man in charge of “Harvest Festival,” Christian Wirth, was instrumental in the Aktion T4 program, the Nazi killing of the handicapped that preceded and smoothed the path for the Holocaust.) “For a battalion of less than 500 men, the ultimate body count was at least 83,000 Jews.”Reading all this is exhausting, even in a fairly short book. The usual disturbing details, hard to understand, crop up, such as that Jews went to their deaths with “quiet composure.” Browning humanizes, or at least reifies, the men of the battalion, drawing incisive sketches of them, as known through the interviews to which he had access. Generally, those few who did not participate, or limited their participation, were usually of a slightly higher social class than the other men. Several were tradesmen who had their own businesses and were not interested in a postwar police career, and so were more independent. Roman Catholics seemed to be the most likely to refuse—but there were few in Hamburg, so this was not a large group, either. But, as one would expect, no one factor dictated a man’s behavior. Or rather, one single factor hard to define did—his character. So why did “ordinary men” men become killers of innocents? Browning goes through each possibility. The first is conformity, “the basic identification of the men in uniform with their comrades and the strong urge not to separate themselves from the group by stepping out.” In essence, this is peer pressure. The second is a desire and compulsion to obey authority from above, reinforced by the “legitimizing capacities of government,” a strong element in the German mindset. The third is the men’s belief that they had no choice, that punishment for themselves or their families would follow a refusal to obey orders. As Browning notes, though, there is no example known in all the war of a single incident of a soldier being punished for refusal to murder civilians, much less any repercussions for his family, although that’s not to say threats were not made. Punishment of uninvolved family members for political offenses was, and is, a Left/Communist specialty, not used to any relevant degree by the Nazis. The fourth is anti-Semitism, conditioned by years of Nazi propaganda (or, perhaps, as discussed below, by the German social culture and pysche itself, not merely by Nazism). The fifth, beyond mere anti-Semitism, is aggressive indoctrination, creating the active principle of eliminationism of which intellectual anti-Semitism was the passive precursor. But, as Browning notes, these men were not political Nazis, for the most part, and relative to, for example, the SS, they received cursory indoctrination, in which at most a dislike for Jews was inculcated, not a desire to kill Jews.Browning seems to think that of these five, conformity was the key element, but that any individual man’s behavior cannot be isolated to one simple explanation. He points to the Stanford prison experiment as evidence that average men can quickly become cruel and treat others in dehumanizing ways, which is certainly true, as shown by this book, although it turns out that the actual Stanford experiment was pretty much a fraud, and not replicable to boot. Browning also adduces Stanley Milgram’s famous experiment with test subjects giving electric shocks to people at the command of an authority figure, noting the effect both of authority and peer pressure/conformity (although that experiment has also been criticized as far removed from the real world). My opinion is that pointing to these experiments isn’t particularly helpful to the reader; the mere recitation of the facts, combined with the (presumably far less traumatic) experiences of each of us, should be enough to show that conformity, by itself or combined with other factors, is itself enough to create murderers, for all men are fallen, and Order Police Battalion 101 is just another example in an endless litany. Each of us can be Cain. The only explanation that Browning rejects outright is that the actions of Battalion 101, and of all those who killed Jews in the Holocaust, were the result of some uniquely evil strain in the German psyche, springing from centuries of anti-Semitism as the core defining element of German culture. And there lies the post-publication history of this book. Browning’s core point is that these were ordinary men, not ordinary German men, and that to focus on their being German makes us feel that the Holocaust is unique, and therefore can be ignored as not having real lessons for the future, since the Germans appear to have left anti-Semitism behind. When this book came out, in 1992, it was widely acclaimed. In 1996, though, Daniel Goldhagen (known for his book "Hitler’s Willing Executioners," a 1998 expansion on his arguments with Browning) attacked "Ordinary Men," claiming that Browning had this analysis exactly wrong, and the problem was the Germans themselves, each and every one.I am hardly a Holocaust studies expert, but my understanding is that a basic divide is between “functionalists,” like Browning, and “intentionalists.” As the names suggest, the functionalists see the Holocaust as not being specifically planned and not being the necessary consequence of German sociology or even Nazi ideology, but something that organically developed as an intersection of ideology and events. In another universe, the Germans won the war quickly, and most Jews were not killed, but perhaps deported to Madagascar or Africa. Hitler probably never directly ordered the Holocaust and did not plan it; he stated the need for the “Final Solution” (which Browning believes was, until 1941, conceived of purely as a geographic relocation solution), and the well-known principle of “moving toward the Führer,” combined with the anarchy and internal competition of the Nazi state, along with circumstance, did the rest. The intentionalists, in opposition, see the Holocaust as the precise and deliberate culmination of a twenty-year plan. Lacking documentary evidence for this, they tend to focus, like Goldhagen, on the idea that the Germans uniformly lusted to kill Jews, as a result of German social psychology. Hitler just gave them permission to do what they all wanted to do all along.I knew none of this until I read this book, and came upon the Afterword, published in 1998 by Browning to respond to Goldhagen’s attack on him. Browning scathingly dismisses Goldhagen, in terms quite aggressive for an academic dispute. He distinguishes between German “xenophobic” anti-Semitism, common enough but not supremely important in the culture, and the much rarer “chimeric” or “redemptive” anti-Semitism found in true ideologues, such as Himmler, and a “fringe phenomenon” until 1933. He points out that if Goldhagen’s thesis is true, and the Germans were not indoctrinated into anti-Semitism by the Nazis, how were they so easily indoctrinated out of anti-Semitism after the war? He notes many other mass killings of equal viciousness, from Yugoslavia in the war, to Mao to Stalin, to Cambodia, to Rwanda. He accuses Goldhagen of bad history on many fronts, including the idea that anti-Semitism was more important to most Germans as a threat than Social Democracy or the Triple Entente. He notes that the Nazis were more than happy to kill many others besides Jews, especially Russians and Poles. He rips Goldhagen for bias, cherry picking his data and terrible social science methodology. The cumulative effect, though I have not read Goldhagen myself, is pretty devastating. In any case, Browning is correct that the behavior of Reserve Police Battalion 101 is not unique. It is, as Peterson says, what all of us could become—perhaps some of us might be the non-conformist, retroactively, in the right circumstances, baptized as heroes. But probably not. And that implies that if ideological mass, mechanized killing returns to the West, it will find little difficulty implementing the desires of ideologues. We on the Right tend to see this as a threat always over the horizon when the Left dominates, and that is true enough as a historical matter—the vast majority of such twentieth-century ideological killing was conducted by the Left, in an attempt to reach the Utopia that justified sacrifice, or at least the sacrifice of others. And yes, most significant killing by the Right in the twentieth century (leaving aside the Nazis, who had a great deal of leftist ancestry), was measured and usually proportionate, the result of civil war and the need to eliminate direct and existential threats, as in Chile, for example. But the Right should not be complacent—the same demonic, chthonic drives that spur on the Left recur, in their own fashion, in the Right, if less often. We easily forget the Ustasha in Croatia, for example, and, again, the line between good and evil runs through every human heart. The Right must reckon with the truth that, in any future ideological hot conflict with the Left in America, towards which the Left is pushing hard, it would be easy for ordinary men to once again descend into eliminationism—particularly if the Right becomes informed by its own utopian ideology, rather than by the simple desire to break the current power of the Left and return society to basic virtue and the opportunity for human flourishing. Ideology, especially utopian ideology, is not only seductive and gives apparent meaning and simplicity; it is also an effective way to organize people and power. Merely offering a better life not crushed by the Left does not move men’s souls in the same way. Very few will die on the barricades for Russell Kirk. We see stirrings of a Right ideological movement, attractive as always to aimless young men, in groups like Gavin McInnes’s Proud Boys. It’s amusing to see the evil and terroristic Antifa get beat up, as they deserve, but it’s not a good sign for the future. Writ large, ultimately such movements, or rather their successors, can lead to the same type of behavior that Browning expertly narrates. Thus, reading this book, and listening to people like Jordan Peterson, may serve as a form of inoculation against such a dystopian future. All young men should be required to read it. For some, like Antifa, it will be taken as a how-to guide, but for others, it may dampen the wars to come.

This was a tough book to read and then to put down. There is much about this history that we do not learn from at our peril, again and again. Evil and its causes reman open to debate but the ability of average people to partake in such evil was and is frightening.

An important and thought provoking book. Very meticulous in researching the topic. Got me thinking for a long time about the inconceivable contrast between the characteristics of these "Ordinary Men" and the atrocities they carried out. Inconceivable! Unforgivable!

Good. Informative and well laid out to be understood. Should be a must read for all teenagers to see the reality of life which can occur..Well researched.

The book is 90% an account of atrocities committed by the subject unit. If this is the first book you read of the Holocaust then it's definitely worthwhile. If, as in my case, it's the 50th, then it's just piling on. That's not bad; it's crucial to remember the atrocities committed by the Germans, and to try to understand what enabled them. But the book promised some insight into the people who committed the atrocities. It fails to deliver anything new. Unit cohesion, dehumanization of the enemy, fear of punishment by the authorities... all things we've seen before. And I'm not saying that there IS anything new. I suspect there is not. This would be a one-star book if it were not for the excellent discussion of the Stanley Milgram experiments and their relevance at the end, with more detail than I have previously seen on those events.

This book has 6 chapters on fingerprinting and 7 on face identification. The 3 overview chapters are informative and somewhat useful. There are lots of references in the book. Many of the other chapters are long descriptions of new, unproven ideas with much detail and little evaluation or motivation

#3,959 Paid in Kindle Store (See Top 100 Paid in Kindle Store)

This writer, Ms. Riley, had potential, I think. She's got all the elements of a romance novel, but really lacks the subtilty of a well put-together book. In this book, all of it is telling, very little showing.Lots of inconsistency:1) after dinner supposed to go back to Claudia's house...they end up at Brian's place.2) is Brian driving or does he have a driver? She's on his lap in the car but the car is still moving. ??3) at 60% she wonders why she resisted Brian for so long?????????????? She never resisted Brian, not ever.4) snow? At 64% we find out it's winter.5) Her brother Mark drags her out of the animal shelter and Brian doesn't see?6) Organized crime? I don't think so.I'm going to skip this author and wish her luck.

The first time Brian saw her in all her baggy clothes getup, something shifted inside of him and he just could not get her out of his head. His soul focus these days is Claudia (the woman he met that fateful night) instead of his business. She has not responded to his phone calls or his texts and has the days go by, it's driving him crazy. So he contacted her brother and refused to do business with them if Claudia is not the main contact.Claudia's life has not been the same since the death of her grandmother, but she is trying to continue living one day at a time and she is just grateful her grandmother never saw the type of person her brother Brian is. She does not like or trust his business partner (there is just something about him that makes her fear for her life anytime he is around). Now they are trying to pimp her out to Brian, their potential business partner for him to get into business with them. The only thing they don't know is that Brian makes her feel things and have her aching fiercely for him.

Ahhhh! I was hoping Brian would get his own story, and believe me, I was so, so happy that he did! It was another smash hit from this amazing duo. When Brian’s character was first introduced in Hungry for More, I was a bit worried in the beginning about him being a jerk, but it didn’t take me long to realize he was head over heels for a girl. And trust me, I couldn’t wait to find out just how much. When he first sees Claudia, he knows she is the one for him, but he doesn’t realize exactly what she is caught up in. It’s not her fault that her brother is a total mess, and he thinks Claudia should do everything he says. Once Brian realizes she’s in trouble, he makes it his mission to do whatever it takes to keep her safe, while also making her fall in love.I adored this book so much. It’s super cute, while also intense at times. The chemistry is amazing, and it’s a perfect AR book, and I couldn’t ask for more.

Holy Candy Canes AR really brings the heat with Naughty Or Nice Brian N Claudia will melt The Snow, UR Heart and UR Kindle with their Sweet, Saucy, N Sizzling Hot Romance!I was in love from the first page and couldn't put it down till the very end! Now I'm craving My next AR fix can't wait for more! Their books are a delicious addiction that I never want to kick! 😉It was awesome to see Sage N Jensen again they are simply adorable together!I'm dying to read Lars story pretty please Alexa Riley??? We need to know what happens next! ❤️❤️❤️

All of Alexa Riley books are over the top insta love with guaranteed HEA. All well written, none that are full length novels. They vary from quickie’s to novellas. This one is more of a novella. Some are rougher or raunchier, some sweet and adorable, all with super steamy scenes. This book is more on the sweet side.Brian and Claudia meet on a job sight and Brian becomes instantly obsessed, possessive, and in love. He will stop at nothing to have Claudia in he life forever. Claudia is under the thumb of her low life brother. He wants to use her in seedy business dealings. Little does he know Brian is on to him and won’t let Claudia be treated that way. He rushes in just like a knight in shinning armor and saves the day and they live happily ever after! Enjoy!

Brian sees Claudia and instantly falls for her. She’s very shy and avoids his phone calls. Her brother and her brother’s gangster boss force her to go out with Brian because, they want his business and they told her to do anything he wants. Her brother is very mean to her and tells she can’t do anything right. She and Brian fall for each other, that’s not what her brother wants. He drags her away from her job and us going to force her to do things she doesn’t want to do. Of course Brian goes all Alpha and saves her so, they get their HEA!

I know this was meant to be a quick little read but I think it was a bit too quick. It was cute, I suppose. In an insta everything way. However, I wished there was a bit more to the story. What happened with the club? What happened to Grandma's house? The brother? Slate?I was hoping Brian's parents would make a brief appearance like they had in Sage's book. Not my fave but I liked it enough to await the next.

Naughty or Nice is a sweet and fun little treat by Alexa Riley. An over the top alpha named Brian has set his sights on an innocent and lovely woman named Claudia. Claudia has a shady brother that threatens to meddle in their flourishing courtship. Can Brian and Claudia get their happily ever after? This book was passionate, engaging, racy and dazzling. If you love insta-romance with sexy and steamy scenes this is the book for you.

This Is Paradise is the inspiring story of how an ordinary Irish woman transformed her grief over the loss of her son into good for others. Mags Riordan's son Billy accidentally drowns in a lake in the African country of Malawi. Initially moved to start a school in the village where her son died, Riordan visits and discovers a crucial need for medical services in the area. In this well-researched book, author Suzanne Strempek Shea tells the story of Mags--both in Ireland and Africa--and shows how she overcomes her grief to make a significant impact on her adopted nation. This is a must-read for all who hope to make a difference in the world.

I bought this because I am a fan of Suzanne's work, both fiction and nonfiction. In doing so, I learned about a courageous woman who has really made a difference in the world. In addition, I gained insight into the plight of the citizens of Malawi and their culture. I learned a lot and feel motivated to take action on things important to me.

A very interesting book -- the premise sounds tragic: an Irish woman who has suffered the loss of three children goes to Africa to visit the site where her young adult son drowned. And . . . she ends up starting a foundation and building a health clinic in this remote area. She spends most of each year in Africa, where she devotes her energy and expertise to the project.

Author has ability to make you feel she is in your living room telling this fascinating story of a regular person dealing with grief and making something positive. Interviews with friends, family, colleagues fleshes out and colors two different worlds, Dingle and Lake Malawi.

An engaging and enjoyable book I recommend whether you are Irish or not!

This is an interesting story of what one woman was able to accomplish out of the deep "wounds" her life has provided. IF you choose to read this book, you will learn much about life in a very poor village in Africa. Also, about the determination of "Mags", a mother of not only her own five children, but the people of Malawi.I will say in fairness, there were times while reading I thought it was "long" and "overdone".

I liked the book as I know the woman personily

Beyond inspiring!

Evolving Halakhah: A Progressive Approach to Traditional Jewish Law

Review

"For those of us who have argued that the traditional Halakhah [Jewish law] is far more open, pluralistic and compassionate than it has been made to be, Dr. Zemer now provides a detailed documentation of that position ... an indispensable resource for understanding the core of Jewish tradition." ―Dr. Neil Gillman, professor of Jewish philosophy, The Jewish Theological Seminary of America “In its own right, an important link in the chain of liberal Halakhah ... deserving of assessment and respect as a collection of responsa.” ―Rabbi David Ellenson, PhD, president, Hebrew Union College–Jewish Institute of Religion “Through this scholarly yet accessible book, Zemer challenges those who have allowed Halakhah to become rigid and callous. Zemer brilliantly demonstrates that justice and compassion provide the basis for authentic halakhic decisions and demands acceptance for his progressive approach.” ―Rabbi David Teutsch, president, Reconstructionist Rabbinical College “Grounded in the tradition of adaptation and renewal, Zemer's voice is vital to our survival today.” ―Rabbi Naamah Kelman, coordinator, Beit Midrash, a Liberal Yeshiva, Jerusalem “Finally, a text for liberal Jews enabling us to encounter Halakhah as a significant and meaningful structure in our lives.” ―Rabbi Sheldon Zimmerman, vice president, Jewish Renaissance and Renewal, United Jewish Communities “An extraordinary achievement, for it both projects deep respect for Halakhah and contributes to its development. Rabbi Zemer searches for traditional precedents that allow for flexibility and reflects a Halakhah that walks in the footsteps of Hillel rather than of Shammai.” ―Rabbi W. Gunther Plaut, editor, The Torah: A Modern Commentary

Rabbi Zemer's Evolving Halakhah: A Progressive Approach to Traditional Jewish Law, takes a novel and I think very fruitful method and applies it to Jewish law. Rabbi Zemer is a progressive Rabbi in Israel (as the branch of Reform is called there) and is well versed in the vast literature of Halakhah, or Jewish law. As such, he does not simply play the Reform card by saying "Halakhah is no longer valid" and endorse a spiritual, cultural, or ethnic Judaism. Rather, he takes Halakhah on its own terms, using its very rules and precedents to show that in the past lenient, more humane rulings were far more common than today. As an Israeli rabbi, much of Rabbi Zemer's book applies to Jews living in Israel, where such matters as marriage, divorce, and `who is a Jew' are handled by an established religious body. In America, things are much more fractured. Issues such as these come up, but are treated quietly within the confines of particular American communities and denominations. In a way, American Judaism is far more like the kind of Judaism that Zemer espouses: pluralistic, open to disagreement, fluid.Perhaps the meta-conclusion that this books shows, but which Rabbi Zemer never quite spells out enough, is that more often than not Halakhah is decided based on political considerations. When all Jews were observant (and largely poor) rabbis tried to take a lenient approach for the sake of compassion. There was nothing riding on allowing a couple to marry, for instance, rather than the pain or suffering caused by their inability to marry due to mamzer, or illegitimate issues. Today, strictness in Halakhah has become a way for the Orthodox to both differentiate themselves from secular Jews, and from other Orthodox groups. Strictness becomes a way to prove one's Orthodox credentials and in some instances have gone so far as to become mannerist in appearance.Rabbi Zemer offers a well-reasoned and detailed book on the rationale behind more liberal, humanistic halakhic decisions. As much as possible he tries to take the politics out of religious Jewish law, and place it on a more humane footing.

I found Evolving Halakhah to be a fascinating book. It covers everything fro converts to Judaism, to the peace process. Rabbi Moshe Zemer put a positive interpretation on Halakhah, enabling progressive jews to awake to the possibilities of jewish tradition. I strongly recommend it to anyone searching more about Halakhah.

Interesting take on Jewish Laws.

I am reading this book with a group as part of a class at my Synagogue (Reform). We are reading slowly and discussing each page. Reading it with a knowledgeable group has added a great deal of meaning to the content. I think I would be missing much of the meaning and back story if reading this on my own. Our instructor is a Reform rabbi. Of course, I think if you are not a Reform Jew, you might find some of the arguments too liberal. Although I am not a Reform Jew by birth (raised "Conservadox"), I agree with the premise of the book that laws have to evolve and suit the times in which we live. Anything that does not grow with the times will become obsolete and out of step with humanity. Interesting arguments among the religious scholars in each age.

Moshe Zemer's Evolving Halachah is indeed a late 20th landmark in liberal Jewish thought, for it is the first time a comprehensive philosophy of Jewish law has been in articulated in English. Zemer's position as Chairman of Israel's Reform Jewish Bet Din, or religious court, gives him the authority to speak on his subject. The book looks mostly at Halachah from the vantage point of Jewish issues in Israel, such as conversion, Sabbath observance, military service in the territories, women's rights in marriage, divorce and the synagogue; Jewish burial customs and issues; and many others. However, the problem this writer sees with the work, is the nature of the author is up against. Solomon Freehof, the pioneering American Reform Halachist, compiled a series of Reform Responsa or letters of commentary on Jewish legal issues over the nearly five decades he was active in this field, and so has his successor, Rabbi Walter Jacobs. However, Freehof's vast compendium of published work is not once alluded by Zemer, and only 2 of his responsa are noted in the entire book, while the volumes Jacobs compiled are nowhere noted.Further, the principle notion of Reform has always been accommodation to modernity, but the limits of that accommodation have never really been clearly articulated. From the earliest days of reform in Germany 200 years ago, convenience has played a large role in determining the Reform outlook, which is why for example the Reform movement has issued 4 major `platform statements' on theology and Jewish Practice in the last 130 years.Zemer's biggest problem though is twofold: the ignorance of his Reform laity on the one hand, and the deeply embedded charisma of a clear, and charismatic Orthodox worldview on the other. Of his 11 proposed principles to govern halachic change, only one reminds the worshipper of God or would provide even the slightest incentive to practice, which is the inherent holiness of the mitzvoth. In the Orthodox realm, they have 13 principles of halachic change, fist articulated in the Talmud 1500 years ago, and part of the daily prayer service every day to this day. This writer would say therefore, that while Zemer's book is an outstanding pioneering effort, it bites off more than it can chew, essentially arguing it's principles without an adequate philosophic grounding. However, while the grounding of this work is week, that doesn't mean none exists; merely that it must come from another quarter. In "Jewish History and Divine Providence(available here on Amazon.com)," I supply the rationale missing from Zemer's text: namely an argument which examines the relationship between Jewish law, Jewish history and it's actual practice, shows how the mitzvoth have actual effect in the real world, and how Jewish practice or the lack of it has influenced modern Jewish history. With "Jewish History and Divine Providence" and "Evolving Halachah," the reader will have a complete praxis of liberal Judaism, one by which to live and practice, not avoid.

This book is about technical jewish laws. It is NOT about current affairs in Israel, which i was told itwas about. If you are interested in nitpicking do's and dont's and need to see someone's proof of thedownside of inflexible following of rules, this book may be for you.Otherwise, though well written, i would say it was a waste of time.

WE ARE STUDYING THIS BOOK AT THE TEMPLE RIGHT NOW.IT IS EXACTLY WHAT I EXPECTED.
