Randolph, the Thelemic Magicians who purchased the Magickal Childe's 1st English translation Sexual magic 30 years ago, and modern-day Occult and/or Tantra students already familiar with Maria de Naglowska's The Sacred Rite of Magical Love: A Ceremony of Word and Flesh,The Light of Sex: Initiation, Magic, and Sacrament, and Advanced Sex Magic: The Hanging Mystery Initiation.All will be well served by this recent new translation. The translator and editor is quite familiar with Dr. Randolph's works, and is often able to cite page and paragraph of works such as "The New Mola" and "The Ansieratic Mysteries" to firmly ascertain what are Randolph's teachings, and what portions are certainly Ms. de Naglowska's own additions. Even so, there are parts and portions the translator leaves unattributed as they are not found in the published writings of either Ms. de Naglowska or Dr. Randolph.A close comparison with the Magickal Childe edition shows some changes in translation; there are times the translator suggests that Ms. Naglowska may have been working from a hand-written manuscript, and offers what seem to be logical suggestions. I suspect that the wealth of material available through the Internet, 1st edition reproduction PDFs of all of Dr. Randolph's works, as cited in the present edition, assisted the present translator to identify when the material steers sharply away from Dr. Randolph and towards Ms. de Naglowska's.

I was unaware of this book and found it when I was searching for a “classic by an author of color” for a reading challenge. At 95 pages this is more of a novella than a novel. It was written in 1927 during the Harlem Renaissance. Given the time period, it is a remarkable book that is still relevant today.The story is narrated by Irene Redfield, a light-skinned black woman. She is married to a black physician and they have two sons. She is living in Harlem with her family but grew up in Chicago. During a trip home, she meets a childhood friend named Clare Bellew. Clare is also light-skinned but has decided to “go native,” living her life as a white woman. She is married to a wealthy white man who is an overt racist. He has no idea that his wife and their young daughter are black. Clare insinuates herself into Irene’s life and even comes to New York City for an extended stay. Irene is both fascinated and repelled by Clare. The book examines each woman’s approach to passing for white. Irene, who is insecure, seems to envy Clare’s confidence and also resent it. She also fears that Clare has made a dangerous mistake by lying to her husband about her heritage. There are several tense moments in the book when Irene has the opportunity to out Clare. She always chooses to keep her secret. Irene’s internal struggle between being proud of her heritage and protecting her friend is painfully drawn out to a horrible conclusion.Though the book is short, as are the sentences and paragraphs, it packs a big punch. You can read this quickly, but the book is better when you savor the words and think about the implications. To me, the novel is about mixed feelings and blurred lines. You can feel Irene’s ambivalence. The author does not provide any “right” answers and the book ends with even more questions. Some literary critics suggest that there is a lesbian element to the relationship between Irene and Clare. I wondered about that myself, but that is not a central part of the book in my opinion. Passing was not a part of my college reading list, but I am so glad that I found it.

The title of this book refers to a group of light-skinned African-American women who can "pass" for white during Jim Crow. I give this book five stars, with one reservation. I found the book fascinating, with some amazing writing, and a riveting plot line that you are dropped into without the slightest suspicion, and blindsided by the depth of the psychological drama that unfolds. My criticism is that the book ends too quickly, and too abruptly. I would have read three times as much about this astounding world, and all of the multiple characters, black and white, that are brought to life so vividly, along with the glamor of the Harlem Renaissance. It should have been a much longer book. This writer got a Guggenheim and then couldn't get her subsequent book published. I heard about this book because it was the subject of a discussion at the Waterstones bookstore in London, and since it was an American writer, it made me curious. I suspect the author's life, as a black woman in those days, led her into the kind of poverty and obscurity that Zora Neale Hurston ended up living, as a hotel maid, at the time of her death. We lost out on the kind of body of work they might have produced had they been of a race, class and gender that offered more support for their literary gifts.

It is very unfortunate that we only have precious few works by Larsen to enjoy. Chief among them, of course, are the novels Quicksand and Passing. Quicksand, which is a great book, is longer and more complex (and well worth the read), but Passing is a condensed jewel of a book. And scandalous! It's almost inappropriate to describe a work by the masterful Larsen as "juicy", but that it is. Set in early Twentieth Century Harlem, the story focuses on Irene Redfield, the wife of a fairly affluent (albeit discontent) doctor and mother of two boys. All is more or less well until the reintroduction of the beautiful and bewitching Claire Kennedy into Irene's life. Although both Irene and Claire are of African-American heritage, both can "pass" for white and Larsen explores this idea thoroughly. But "passing" is the theme of the book, both in the obvious and non-obvious sense. There are a few underlying subplots (what makes the story all the more scandalous and juicy) including a hidden subplot (SPOILER AHEAD) involving a sexual attraction between Irene and Claire. Remember, this book was written circa 1920 and one couldn't casually write about a love affair between two women. There's no overt love affair between the two women here, however, at least none that Irene will allow. You'll see my meaning in the last few pages of the story.The real star of this book is Larsen's writing style. Her descriptions and phrasings are lush and vivid, yet she avoids pouring it on too thick, making for never a dull moment. She had a gift for expressing raw underlying emotion. This book (with its close companion "Quicksand") is canonical in many universities and rightfully so. Highly recommended!

I was very excited to see another oracle deck by one of my favorite tarot artists, Ciro Marchetti. I have spent a considerable amount of time working with his "Gilded Reverie Lenormand". As someone who grew up in an environment where the women read fortunes (old-school) with a regular deck of playing cards, these minimalist type of decks are right up my alley. I can see where they (my mother and aunts) got some of their inspiration from (probably the "Gypsy Witch" fortunetelling cards and Lenormand-type decks).When I say minimalist, I don't detract from Ciro's artwork at all. The Kipper deck, like all of Marchetti's decks, is beautifully, thoughtfully illustrated. Whether you are looking at character-oriented cards (such as: Main Female, Mature Man, False Person, or Privileged Lady) or cards such as Lovers, House, Change, Sudden Wealth, Bad Health, or Coffin) the graphics effectively depict the depth of the meaning behind the one or two words on the cards. After a brief period of time working with this deck, the studious reader will not need to rely on the book to interpret these cards. It starts to become second nature (the ability to interpret the card yourself and then to blend that interpretation with the meanings of the surrounding cards in a spread).One complaint I have is that the Kipper deck is not the same size as the Lenormand (the Lenormand deck is slightly taller). It makes (shuffling) using them together rather cumbersome. I tried this a couple of times and have found that if you are going to do this, the best way to incorporate them together may be to shuffle both decks separately. I lay out the Kipper deck first then cover each card in the reading with a Lenormand card for more information on the Kipper card underneath. I find this works extremely well. With the Lenormand trimmed in gold and the Kipper in silver, you almost think they were meant to be used paired together. Unlike the Lenormand, the Kipper deck is comprised of a lot of character (people) cards. So using the Lenormand alongside the Kipper deck can really enhance a reading. Give it a try (if you have both decks) and see what you think.As mentioned by other reviewers, the artist chose to give these cards a British Victorian feel, though this deck originated in Germany. He also chose to add some extra cards to the deck. This only adds to the uniqueness of this deck. The cards are small, easy to shuffle and the box, is well made. The booklet to the Kipper deck, unlike the one for the Lenormand, is bound and well-made. It provides interpretations from three different people for each of the cards (sometimes they reinforce each other's interpretation, sometimes these three viewpoints provides a little more insight into the meaning of individual cards).I love the tarot, but sometimes, if you are like me, you want some information on the nitty-gritty, day-to-day world that the Tarot seems to sometimes dance around. Death, illness, birth, luck, career success or failure, love, marriage, divorce, etc. Yes, these cards can scare you (life isn't always pretty) at face value. As a regular reader of these types of oracle decks, a coffin (or death card coming up, or a thief card) doesn't necessarily mean you or someone is going to die or get robbed. It can still carry metaphorical meaning instead of a face-value type of interpretation. I look for patterns....do these cards come up with more frequency than usual. Do they always seem to appear around the main person, or a particular individual (the child card, for example)? If so, then take special note as it could be trying to tell you to guard your health, brace yourself for some sort of disaster, or prepare for some good times ahead. But, remember, nothing is pre-ordained to happen.All in all, it's another wonderful deck by Ciro Marchetti. This, along with the Lenormand, are two decks I work with frequently. I find the information and insight I receive to be extremely helpful and I recommend this deck to both experienced and novice fortune-tellers.

The cards are very sturdy, glossy and the art is beautiful. I love specially the silver edges. I also love the explanation for each cards in the booklet it came with. It offers 3 different explanations from 3 experts from different cultures. The sturdy box with magnetic closure is also a plus. It’s not too big and you can carry it in your bag or pocket.The only “issue” I found was that card #8 (Fake Person) was missing and instead I got two #13 cards (Wealthy Man). Although I find it good luck to receive 2 positive cards instead of the negative one, I can’t use this deck professionally. I requested a replacement because I really like this deck.

Exceptionally beautiful cards. Being in the prophecy biz for 40 years I collect cards and Ciro Marchetti is my favourite artist. The cards are very inspiring and each card a little masterpiece.These cards originate from Germany and are very popular among German fortune tellers. As Tarot cards are more meant for self exploration these cards are made for actually seeing what it going to happen - so future oriented.

Beautiful deck, Ciro Marchetti is a wonderful artist! I love the colors, the silver edges, the correct sturdiness of the cards, the size of them. This deck is a delight seeing and handling. The one caveat I have is that, while Ciro claims he consulted with experts on Kipperkarten, he clearly lacks enough information on the traditional way Kipper cards are read. The way some cards face others have to be clear, and the way Ciro depicts several of the cards is not clear. Mind you, it is absolutely workable and doable and I still get a lot of awesome reads using this deck, but Ciro needed way more directions in order for him to nail this Kipper deck.

I have read several books on the topic of the current drug war in Mexico from Bowden to Campbell. While I enjoyed each, I found Gibler's book To Die In Mexico to be the best in providing both the 35,000 foot view while detailing the situation on the ground. Gibler's book puts the drug war in the context of a larger geopolitical arena in which the drug industry has actually kept a weak global economy turning and how agreements like NAFTA allow shipments of drugs to reach its consumers in the United States.Gibler's book will take you from the streets of Culiacan to Ciudad Juarez to Reynosa, where you meet survivors of murder attempts, families of the dead who cry for justice, and journalists who try to do their jobs in the backdrop of hopeless violence. The book seems to question whether legalization or decriminalization can provide a solution or if it could create more problems for an already impoverished Mexican state.The book is recent, citing events that have occured in 2010 and 2011 so people following the situation in Mexico will recognize news events in which they may already be familiar. And it does a thorough job of identifying the key cartels battling for control of each plaza. I believe this book is must reading for anyone wanting to truly understand the situation in Mexico.

This is an excellent book, it is hard to read because of the content but otherwise an easy read. An eye opening book.

The substance of the books are just a few pages with double spacing and pictures to make it fill about 100 pages. Most of the information could be on a product features slide show with no guts to it at all. For example, the power query section show how to create the query, select fields and return the results back to Excel. No where does it show how to modify that query. It doesn't even touch on the structure of the M code used. You can figure most of the contents out just by clicking around in the application.

A charmingly simple introduction to quantum physics using the example of Shrodinger's Cat, which asserts that "a quantum system such as an atom or photon can exist as a combination of multiple states corresponding to different possible outcomes...." and will remain in this "superposition" until observed or interfered with by the outside world (Wikipedia). In this clever 'Baby Loves' book, Ruth Spiro uses baby's kitty to demonstrate this theory: is she asleep in the box or awake? It isn't till baby opens the box (being the outside force) that she discovers which it is. Clever first building block to a complicated subject that can be expounded upon as the child grows. Outstanding.

Greater than expected when we got it. We have the other books too so we preordered this, my 9mos old baby loves the pics. Husband (who is a geek) loves it more 😀 It's a simplified/child friendly explanation of schrodinger's cat concept!

Being a physicist, I bought a good number of physics related books for my baby. (Maybe too many). My daughter loves this book. Yes, it is very very very basic but so are many of these baby science type books. The artwork is engaging and my daughter loves looking for the cat. I have both the Thermodynamics and this one by Ruth Spiro and my daughter loves them both. Personally, I like the Quantum one better than the Thermodynamics (because I feel the content in Quantum physics is more related than the content in Thermodynamics is to concepts) but my daughter loves them both equally. The imagery and the writing are much more at the level of my 2 year old than some of the other books. I really don't like how bare Chris Ferrie books can be, they aren't warm and inviting like these books. I have two of Ruth Spiros and several Chris Ferrie (ABCs of Mathematics, Physics, Science, and General Relativity) , but my child prefers Spiro's books over Ferrie's.

This is one of our 2 year old's favorite books - and has reliably been for a year already. The pages are colorful and exciting and have lots of things to "discuss" with with your child (the meow, bedroom furniture etc). Yes it is mostly a reference to schrodinger's cat and not about wave functions, but it's a cute story and makes a kid want to read it - which I believe is what a toddler book is supposed to do! Other toddler quantum books have less color and aren't as fun for them. For those parents who are looking for something a little more advanced: I've taken several quantum physics courses myself and if you want a book that goes into more detail, buy the Griffiths textbook, which, although it can be read to a toddler, it's probably in a different section of the website. Good luck with Dirac notation; you'll probably want a white board and some markers too.

I love is book. There is a baby, there is a kitty, there is a box. The book takes the concept of the kitty being asleep and awake in the box to a level my 2 year old enjoys. There is no math or formulas, but she is introduced to the concept and is excited about it.

I bought this book as a gift for my grand nephew and the baby absolutely adores it! The illustrations are so colorful and bright, and the simple story is perfect for a baby or toddler. I also like that for a non-science person this book provides an introduction that’s easy to understand, even for us grownups! These books are going to be my go-to gifts for baby showers.

My 15 month old LOVES this book! He lights up like a Christmas tree when I read it to him. I love that it teaches a very basic concept with adorable pictures. Highly recommend!

I think this book is adorable. Instead of the cat being dead or alive it's either awake or sleeping. Good introduction to the Schrodinger's cat paradox.

I love a good epic novel full of adventure, intrigue, and drama... but just as implied by the title of this book, sometimes you need a little something different. Sometimes you want something light and fluffy, not dramatic or heartwrenching, and not every memoir or collection of reminiscences of the past needs to be about a traumatic childhood or the scars left by one's family. Sophie Hudson uses this book to look back on her life and remember the antics of her family, the lessons she took away from her childhood, and just how her parents, friends, and faith shaped her into who she is today... and she does it with humor and heart.These stories aren't anything earth-shattering, and don't go into this expecting a real-life Southern gothic full of abuse, trauma, and dark family secrets. Sophie instead tells fond stories of her family -- parents, grandparents, siblings, cousins, mother-in-law, family friends, etc. -- and tells them with fondness and warmth. Sure, there are struggles -- family deaths, a beloved uncle being slowly taken away by Alzheimer's, her own crisis of faith in her twenties, etc. But balancing it out are tales of her mother-in-law's struggle to master just what a Kindle is and can do, her mother's horror at her father's complete lack of fashion sense, her and her cousin learning sign language so they can talk in church without getting into trouble, and plenty of descriptions of old-fashioned Southern cooking that are bound to make one's mouth water.This book wasn't anything groundbreaking, and some of the stories, while cute, aren't memorable enough to stick in my memory. But all the same, this was a heartwarming read, and something soothing and sweet to cut through some of the darker, more dramatic reads I've picked up lately. A cute quick read for cleansing the pallet and reassuring oneself that there's still a lot of good to be had in the world, and that not every memoir or collection of memories needs to be dark and traumatic.

I've read Sophie's blog for the past four years or so and she often makes me laugh and her new book is no exception. These stories about her family will make you laugh until tears are streaming down your face. There are also moments in the book that will make you cry. Sophie has such a knack for storytelling and when reading these stories I felt like I was sitting right beside her listening to her tell them and at other times, I felt like I was riding along in the car with her family to pick up a bucket of fried chicken. Sophie ties in messages of faith through her storytelling which make the book that much more meaningful. Faith and Family are important to us Southerners! The end of the book contains some really great southern recipes which I hope to try out soon. If you are a fan of the Boo Mama blog, then you will most definitely be a fan of this delightful book.

I don't read a lot of non-fiction. And I rarely--if ever--post a review of the few I do read. However, I couldn't keep my excitement about this book to myself. It would be a disservice to you, my faithful readers, and the public at large.A Little Salty to Cut the Sweet by Sophie Hudson is hands down the best book I've read this year. RUN to the store and get yourself a copy. NOW. Don't even read the rest of this review. Just buy a copy for yourself ... and maybe one for your mama and your grandmama and your best friend too.Sophie has an incredible talent for weaving stories of her very southern family together with nuggets of spiritual truths. Some of the stories are quite poignant. (Reader Tip #1: Have a box of tissues on hand for the first two chapters.) Others are happy tears streaming down your face, wet your pants funny. (Reader Tip #2: Particularly for chapter 7, it would be in everyone's best interests to "go potty" prior to reading. I am not lying to you when I tell you I nearly wet my pants--and thus the bed--while reading this chapter very late one night. Additionally, my dear husband thought I was having a seizure because of the spasms I was having while trying to laugh silently so as not to wake him up. Needless to say, he woke up anyway.) But each story shines a light on the legacy of faith that Sophie and her husband are so blessed to have. Plus, Sophie tells these stories in such a way where her family seems to leap right off the pages, becoming more than just "characters" in a book (which of course they are, since they're real people and all).By the end of the book, I literally could.not.put.it.down. I read the last two chapters on the way to church one night and sat in the car in the parking lot to finish the last few pages. (Pastor, I apologize for coming in late to service that night. This book was just so good!) (Reader Tip #3: Clear your calendar when you pick up this book. Your spouse, children, dog, pastor, and friends will thank you for it.)Sophie's reflections about the treasures she has in her family made me reflect on my own family. There were moments while reading where I found myself imagining my mom or grandmother doing or saying the exact same thing. (Southerners are really all alike, you know.) Southern born and bred, I have a new appreciation for the way we sit around after dinner and tell stories--some of which I've heard at least half a million times.Every year it seems that one book stands out as a book that must be read by all. And it inevitably ends up under every Christmas tree we visit because I can't stand the thought of everyone I know not getting to read this book. For 2013, I feel certain that A Little Salty to Cut the Sweet will be that book (unless I can't wait until December to share it). (And for any relatives or in-real-life friends who may be reading this, act surprised when you open your Christmas gift this year!)A Little Salty to Cut the Sweet reminds Southerners of the joys of being Southern and is a great introduction to the best parts of the South for those who may not have the privilege of living here--faith, family, and lots of laughs.(And apparently, I've now adopted Sophie's habit of writing with lots of parenthesis ... at least for this review anyway!)
