But hey, if you thought the U.S. hockey team could win the gold medal in 1980, if you thought Argentina could beat the U.S. in basketball in the 2004 Olympics in Athens, and if you cried during the ending scene of "Rudy", then this book is for you.You really do have to keep your fantasy hat on while reading the book. Set aside that Chinese National Team fanboi-ism for a little bit and you'll be guaranteed a nice literary experience. The story is basically what it says in the back cover, an American who goes to China to learn the Chinese secrets of table tennis.Pros: I really liked the chapter with Ogimura. The physical preparation for table tennis really pumped me up to go out and do a few sprints and some push-ups. It was like a motivation CD that you listen to in your car before hitting the gym. Once you arrive, you're ready to get down to business. I also enjoyed reading the chapter with "The Dragon". It was really very funny for me. Again, keep your fantasy hat on. There was also a good bit of history in the book. I knew a little bit being a ponger but there were a few things that I had to search online for verification. The World Championship match was complete insanity. The development of the characters of Andy and Coach Wang were excellent in that a reader can identify with both of their motivations.Cons: The chapter with Rong Guotuan was a bit dark. I was not put off by it as I enjoy those kinds things in other books also. I just did not think it fit in well with the overall feel of the book. I suppose it would be like putting bacon in an ice cream cone. Some might like it and some might not.Overall, Larry did a great job mixing TT history, fantasy, and fiction in a 100-page package.

A fascinating story of an American wanting to be the best in the world of table tennis, going to China for some magical and intriguing training sessions, and how he eventually achieved his hard-earned success. The best part is in the journey of it - vivid, colorful descriptions of the matches, processes, psyches, and sometimes point-by-point analysis. This was a real page-turner, and was one of the best binges I've been on.

I lived in Peru for many years and Kim Macquarrie's book "The Last Days of the Incas" was my constant reference book during that time period.Needless to say, I was ecstatic to learn of his writing "Life and Death in the Andes" and pre-ordered many months before the release on December 1st. I've been glued to the book since.Kim has the ability to share so much knowledge and detail on cultural, historical, anthropological, geographical, environmental, etc aspects but in a way that leaves you not wanting to put the book down and as if you are along on a great adventure story. He is not only a leading authority on all things South American, but a true adventurer as well,so his descriptions are amazing and keep you turning pages but at the same time learning so, so much.This book reminds me a lot of a few of my other favorite books on South America; "One River" by Wade Davis, and "Running the Amazon" and "Savages" by author Joe Kane. But if I was headed to South America and was to take along just one, it would be "Life and Death in the Andes" due to the scope and variety of stories contained within.A must buy book for anyone interested in South America, adventure, history, cultures..the list goes on!

I thoroughly enjoyed this book---and I learned a lot!This well-researched book was very informative on many events that had occurred in South America that I knew very little about. I found the details of how the Shining Path, a terrorist group in Peru, and the biggest drug cartel of Medallin in Columbia, developed and ended. I also liked reading about Darwin and how he came about with his ground-breaking ideas of evolution. I truly want to visit the Galapagos Islands some day! WOW! I didn't know about the floating islands and the lifestyle on Lake Titicaca.The intelligence of the author came through many times and especially with his discussion of Kon Tiki and the theories that surrounded the exploration done by Thor Heyderdahl. Who influenced who? The natives from South America visiting the Polynesian Islands or the Polynesians coming the South America.?This is a well-written book, easy to read and understand and I recommend it.

What a super super book. I went to Peru first in '09 and then went back again and this time included Boliva in Oct. 2015. I read MacQuarrie's The Last Days of the Incas after fist trip. That should be required reading for any and all going to Machu Picchu. This book should be required of anyone going other areas of Peru and to Bolivia. I have been to many of the places he covered and really enjoyed re-living my experience. We did get to see the Ice Maiden of Ampato in her current resting place in Arequipa. Cusco is my most favorite city which was not on the itinerary for latest trip. Sorry that I have not been to the Center for Traditional Textiles. Maybe reason for another trip there. There is a similar place in Bolivia. We also got meet and talk with Paulino Esteban - what an experience and so glad he is in this book. I thought I learned much on my trips but MacQuarrie gave me so much more. I am recommending it to the group on the Oct. trip and other like-minded friends. The histories and cultures of all these South American countries are so deep and varied and fascinating. I only hope MacQuarrie keeps traveling and writing.

I loved Kim's book about the last days of the Incas, I read it after my first big international trip. I went to Peru and it filled in lots of gaps for me, made me want to go back again one day.I was so excited for this book to come out, seemed right up my alley. It's basically 9 or so short articles about interesting things in South American history. It's very well written, you can feel the passion he has for that part of the world. It will make you want to buy a new book after each chapter. He lightly delves Into these stories so you'll probably want to go on and do some more research after you finish. I can't think of a better way to recommend a book. You'll read it and be thirsty for more.The only gripe I have is: I think it could have been a great travelogue as well. I would have loved a few paragraphs here and there about the actual road trip down the west coast of the continent. he could have tied things together really well and made a masterpiece. But, that's a small gripe. I loved this book and I hope Kim keeps writing.

Excellent book. Beautifully written. I read slowly, savoring, and was sad the book ended, which I think, is always the ultimate compliment - wishing a book wouldn't end. For such a large subject, spread across a continent, Life and Death in the Andes is an intimate book. The author gracefully juggles a crosscutting of history - both ancient and recent - along with memoir. No easy task. But MacQuarrie does it masterfully, breathing life into history's characters along the way. A wonderful read. Highly recommended.

Excellent! I bought this title as a way of beginning exploration of South America where I am hoping to travel in the near future. I picked this particular book due to the fact that it integrates a geographical place with some of it's history, prominent events or people as well as including the present experience of the author as he traces in the same footsteps. I am partial to Tony Horwitz books for the same reason. I was sorry when the book ended.

Yet another wonder book from Kim. A collection of stories from South America. I learnt so much from all of them You must check out last days of the Inca too. Its AMAZING!

I have been using this book in Kindle rental format for my CNA class this semester. I'm glad I rented it - my school is switching to a different book after this semester, so they wouldn't have considered buying them back. The instructor mentioned some people there teaching the class find the book needlessly verbose - just way more information than necessary.It was a very affordable option as a rental though, especially through ebook. I carry an ipad with me, so I can work on homework no matter where I am without having to haul textbooks around. My only issue is that a handful of pictures are missing throughout the book in the ebook version. It's very rare, but it was unexpected and a little misleading to say "This kindle book looks just like the printed book." Yes, for 99% of the book it is like the printed book, but no, it's not JUST like the printed book.Normally the image comes with a figure number and a description of the image, but if the picture is missing, so is the caption. There's just a large gray box that says, "Image not available due to copyright restrictions." It's very uncommon and I seem to be getting by without them, but it would have been nice to get some kind of warning - especially if thinking about owning a permanent copy of the ebook. Really, they should have at least kept the caption too just so you had more of an idea of what the image might be of. The text usually does refer to the image too, so you at least have that, but the caption often gives a little more information or (in the case of procedural images) brief instruction.You cannot print pages through Kindle. You can use the print screen button to capture pages in the Kindle for PC version and paste them into image editors, documents, etc though. I usually put them in paint real quick first just to crop off anything else that was on my computer screen. I only use that when I do the review questions at the end of the homework now, so I have the questions with me if I want to look over/study off them later.

I bought this for my niece that lives in the Caribbean. She should get it this week. It's what she needs and even though it's not New, it's in very good condition and looks New. Online it said hardcover but it's not which is totally fine. My niece was happy to hear that I was able to get at an affordable price as she really needs it. New runs pretty expensive.

Something is wrong here or maybe i messed up. I wanted the tex book..What i got was sheets with questions and lines to accommodates answers. Total waste of my money. I have been looking at the Pics of the covers for both tex book and what i got and i cant see the difference. Totally dissapointed.

I bought this book in "good" condition. It had been well used before I got it but was still in good condition. It was worth the money I spent and I would recommend it to anyone who is learning the skills for a nursing asst or home health aid. It has all the info you need except for the real life compassion and performance to be a great aid.

Made class more bearable. It simplifies technical stuff. The CD that comes with it will help you prepare for the quizzes and tests you will eventually take. It's a solid book, full of diagrams, pictures and thorough explanations.

I always use Schirmer for my sheet music. I got this book to replace my very old copy that was finally falling apart. Every singer should master these classic arias!

Has all the songs that any classically trained singer needs and all the songs needed to become a classical singer. I have used this book for years and it created the singer.

Ridiculously faded, poor quality printing; as if printed from a printer that was low on toner.

I had read "Not much of an engineer" some time ago and when my wife presented me with the first book of RR "The magic of a name" I was fascinated. Obviously, I then HAD to have book two and the fascination continues - a wonderful story.The physical book is in great condition - impossible to tell from brand new and I would have no reservations about buying from the seller again.

Volume 1 was an excellent read and kept me wanting more. Volume II was superb, with a horror ending! So of course, Volume III is now sharing the shelf. If you want to hear the insights, the story, the people behind the engines, then these volumes simply have no equal. This volume III is perhaps a little drier than the earlier volumes, perhaps not quite as captivating, but still a cracker of a read about a fascinating company and its rebirth. Get all three as they really are a well written and cohesive set.

The book was delivered on time and was as new. The book itself was a great story, following on from volumes one & two. For me, totally fascinating and was as expected - with a name like Rolls-Royce. I was sorry to reach the end.

For those more interested in the cars, there's a lot about aircraft engines that is interesting, but not related. The research seems through throughout, and well illustrated, so worth having regardless.

What a great read. Of the three volumes, I find this one the most interesting. It covers the whole era from Whittle and Hooker to the appalling bankruptcy and rebirth. Covers the aero engines, the cars, diesels, nuclear, the lot. All three volumes are immensely interesting. If you have volume one, you'd better get this one also.

If you are not already familiar with the company, the many details in the book can be overwhelming. A bit slow going.

Very nice book on RR, if you are not already familiar with the Company, you may get lost in all the details.

Look, this is a fine book, but I was led to believe it was about the cars; it is a history of the airplane engines...nothing wrong with that but of limited interest to most.

But if vaccines don’t even do what they’re supposed to do we are really confounded and faced with a very disorienting dilemma. We thought we knew! We thought we had the answer!I am reminded of the story of a guy named Ignaz Philipp Semmelweis, a Hungarian physician, who introduced the notion of hand-washing in obstetric clinics, in Germany in the 1840’s. He proved that doing so diminished the rates of maternal death by puerperal infection significantly (maternal death was high in hospitals then when physicians went from dissecting cadavers to delivering babies without washing their hands in between). This was before germ theory was understood, but he had proof that the rates of infection and mortality were significantly reduced if doctors simply washed their hands with chlorinated lime solutions before attending births. Despite various publications of his results, where hand washing reduced mortality to below 1%, Semmelweis's observations conflicted with the established scientific and medical opinions of the time and his ideas were rejected by the medical community. When a paradigm is shifting and we don’t have all the new understanding we need, AND when powerful interests are involved (whether these be pride, smug arrogance, or big money), making changes is difficult. Ironically, we do know a little more about germ theory these days, but it turns out vaccinating people may not be the best way to prevent disease. Au contraire, it seems to be contributing to a new epidemic of chronic and debilitating auto-immune diseases.Vaccines, A Reappraisal was written by a rigorous physician who has stood up to “business as usual” many times in his career, when he’s seen something dangerous, wrong, or immoral, as well as when the “science of the day” is not matching up to actual results. The evidence he presents in this book more than raises concerns about the safety and efficacy of vaccinating people. His suggestions for “moving forward” given current policy are reasonable and thoughtful. One such recommendation (recently implemented in Sweden) is that “all routine vaccinations for children and adults alike be made optional.” His years of careful observation, concern, research, intelligence, compassion and pragmatism are obvious in this book, which I hope will be read and studied by every family physician, pediatrician and parent as they sort out the difficult decisions surrounding one of our society’s most treasured beliefs in modern medicine. In spite of very large and overwhelming issues, he seems dauntless in upholding his place to inform and inspire us to healthy “seeing” in this quagmire of difficult information. He gives us the science by which vaccines are held to a certain standard of truth. He gives us a glimpse into the complexity of human health, even intimating that we might be more than “science.” He clearly has respect for people, their experiences and choices, and he strives to help them live into their own fullness. The penultimate sentence of his book moves me and gives us a sense of the light from which the book is written. Dr. Moskowitz honors “giving full attention to the actual lived experience of [his] patients; recognizing the elements of health and well-being that lie hidden in or [are] inaccessible to them; and offering the relevant science and most suitable medicine to assist and enhance their own innate self-healing capacity.” In short, he cares from a scientific and a moral base that hold human health care to a much higher standard, which makes the vaccine issue worth our very serious contemplation.

Vaccines – A Reappraisal (Skyhorse 2017) is a seminal, earth-shaking work that should be read by every practicing primary care physician and by every parent or parent-to-be of a child. Although I do not agree with every interpretation or proposed solution to the serious questions Dr. Moskowitz raises about vaccines and current policies about them in the United States, the experience represented (50 years of practice) and the research reviewed are a treasure tome worthy of serious consideration. More importantly, questions raised by the author deserve some answers.I speak from the perspective of being a board certified pediatrician having been in private practice for 31 years and 11 more years as a faculty member of a major medical center teaching pediatric residents in a community teaching program. In 2013 I retired from pediatric primary care to go into practice as an integrative medicine physician and in 2016 achieved a new board certification in integrative pediatrics. Parents often inquire about vaccines, and I will recommend this book for those who have serious questions, along with The Vaccine Friendly Plan (Ballantine Books 2016) by pediatrician Dr. Paul Thomas and Ph.D. Jennifer Margulis.From years of studying both sides of the hot-bed issue that vaccines represent in contemporary society and 31 years in pediatric practice, much of what Dr. Moskovitz describes I was already familiar with. He rightly calls out prevailing practices in the area of informed consent concerning vaccines and many ways in which this long held principle has been sacrificed to what is in essence political correctness about vaccine safety and effectiveness. Simply to raise questions about vaccine safety or of vaccine effectiveness have become “toxic” to the point of subjecting any who dare to question being subjected to various forms of rebuke or outright censure. The prevailing notion that vaccines are, without qualification, “safe and effective” is belied by the available scientific evidence. This is not to be construed that I am “anti-vaccine” as so often is applied to anyone who raises questions. I am among a growing number of experienced and well-read physicians who believe informed consent concerning vaccines and unresolved issues of vaccine safety and effectiveness deserve an open, respectful dialogue. Much of public contemporary debate is polarized, disrespectful, and in too many cases, uninformed.I would like to challenge in a collegial tone my fellow physicians who deal with vaccines to consider the remarkable material in this book and to be open to a rational process of digging beneath the oversimplified veneer of vaccine safety and effectiveness that dominates our profession.
