This book is delightful. The voice of the narrator will draw the audience into the world of the small, all black, community of Eatonville, Florida and Zora Neale Hurston's friends and family. We get a glimpse of how Zora's creative imagination keeps everyone trying to figure out if her stories are truth, lies, or just the way she makes sense of the world. We do learn that early on, Zora is confident of her ability to tell stories and entertain others with them.This book was written to be read aloud, in true folklore/tall-tale fashion. It has great instructional possibility. The language is rich, the historical facts are compelling, and the dialogue creates humor and suspense. The female leads are strong, and well developed for the books 180 pages. Zora's curiosity, and imagination are central to the movement of the story. The book also contains a biography of Zora Neale Hurston, and a timeline of her life.The book does have a few sobering moments, as it opens with man being killed by an alligator. Subsequently, we learn that the main characters father left town to find work, and never returned, a traveling man the children meet and befriend is found murdered with his head missing, and then a strange, quiet man who is the subject of Zora's tall-tales dies in his sleep. All of this misfortune concerning the men of Eatonville however, lends itself to many discussion and instruction possibilities, not the least of which is Zora's "coming of age" and learning the truth about life. These truths, include one characters decision to "pass" for white which is the source of both confusion and tragedy. Zora wades through it all within her circle of family, friends and support and does so with audacious determination and curiosity.

This story takes place in Eatonville, Florida; the first incorporated all black township in the United States. Zora, one of the main characters, believes that she has seen one of their neighbors as half man half gator, but the other children in town do not believe her. When people in town start to get hurt or killed, she believes it is the gatorman that is responsible. She sets out with her best friends to prove she is right. This is a mystery book loosely based on the life of Zora Neal Hurston. Zora was a young girl with a wild imagination. She grew up to write many stories of African-American folklore. This book was a very interesting read. I couldn't wait to find out how things ended. It is rated for ages 10 and up. I would recommend this book for any age group. There is mystery, murder and intrigue happening. It is told from the first person perspective which helps you to connect with the characters.

There is so much to admire in Zora and Me by Bond and Simon. The authors have created a believable and heartfelt story...up to a point. The language, sense of place, and a peek at a fictionalized version of the early days of a formidable writer, and all of this for children is indeed an admirable accomplishment. Writing historical fiction for this age group (10 and up) is challenging but nevertheless, a challenge worth taking up. How does an author tell a rich and compelling story, especially one that addresses issue of race as set in Jim Crow south in an age appropriate manner? The story in Zora and Me falls just short of keeping its contract with children as it enters the complex world of racial conflict and issues of identity. The dark subject matter that descends in the last third of the book may be more appropriate for an older, YA reader.Susan Austin, author of The Bamboo Garden[...]

This is just and FYI as I didn't read this but I am from Orlando and read some of ZNH'S work in college. So I got this for my son who is in 4th grade. It goes use the N word which caught me off guard. So I just explained that it was appropriate for the setting of the book. He said it was a good book and was interesting.

I enjoyed reading this book because of the poetic quality that was much like that of Zora. It does not equal the folky elequence of "Their Eyes Were Watching God", but a fun read anyway. I recommend the book for upper grade elementary school students but all ages who want something light to read would like the book. Especially if they are a Zora Neale Hurston fan, like me.

This book shows startling disrespect for the reader. Nobody seems to have proofread it before sending it for printing; most pages contain typos or bizarre malapropisms, the maths is often wrong, and much of the code is either obviously broken or somehow at odds with the exposition. Important insights are, at random, missing; I can't, for example, find any explanation of what a vertex array object is or why you need one (and that's the first step of the first example in the first chapter). The index, while not short, is missing almost everything I looked for, and that's a big problem, too, since the order of presentation is an uncomfortable compromise between quick start and deep dive. But they know you're going to buy it, because it's *the* book.That said, it does contain a lot of useful information, and it occupies the useful middle ground between reading tedious and generally opaque manual pages and reading tedious and largely irrelevant tutorials. And, yes, it does integrate the material about shaders, knowledge of which is no longer optional.But wow, for an official publication detailing an essential technology, I certainly wish it were less frustrating.

I'll start by saying that this book has a lot of useful information. It is however in rather desperate need of a team of editors. I'm not good enough at 3D stuff yet to be able to critique the math, but there are loads of typos and even incorrect references to other parts of the text. The information it presents is also in an entirely inconvenient order. Many times you'll be reading along and feeling like you are missing something only to eventually come across a line like "don't worry, we'll talk in more detail about XYZ later." If I need that knowledge to not feel lost where I am, shouldn't it be in the book before I got here?

This book might be good for a reference if you already know a lot about OpenGL, but for someone new to it, it's plain awful. There's long expositions between bits of code that have little or nothing to do with the code at hand. The authors just reproduce API calls throughout the chapters without explaining anything useful about them.Take the first few chapters, for instance. You get to see the most basic program possible, then you take a chapter long diatribe on shaders, which goes overkill since you don't even know how to draw a vertex yet. Then, when it comes back (in chapter three!) to finally start talking about drawing, they just throw a bunch of API documentation at you, instead of showing either a full program or snippets that would be useful.The source code is a pile of crap, too. Instead of putting everything a user would want to see into each sample program, they abstracted a ton of setup into their own code, which is awful to read. For example, who creates the main() function inside of a macro? Well, these morons do. Oh, and it doesn't even compile on Linux without writing your own Makefiles and fixing problems throughout the code. Save yourself from this flaming pile of garbage.

More of an overview and reference than a tutorial. If you want a tutorial, get your hands dirty with Anton's OpenGL (free online). If you are a beginner, I would only recommend you plowing through this book if you need the vocabulary. You are going to be lost without some graphics engine architecture. If you already know the concepts for the most part, seeing it again here isn't going to improve your understanding, but you will be stuck on things you haven't seen before, so again will be of little help. The provided code looks like it was pulled from the previous version, is missing some chapters. You should try to find the SDL conversions to run in VS. The best this books does is to help you form a cohesion on what is going on, which earns back a star. Overall, slightly disappointed, however it is fine as a pass through to your furthur studies and a prelude to the blue book.

The writing is repetitive and awkward to read, and the overall organization is bad. After the two introductory chapters, the rest of the book is essentially a rehash of the OpenGL spec, and you're better off just reading about it there.There is sample code, but it often doesn't show anything beyond what you can already tell from the function signature. There are no bigger examples showing how to tie things together, andexcept for the introductory triangle program, there are no complete examples. Some of the code even has easy to notice syntactic and logical errors.

As far as OpenGL books go, this one does an excellent job of explaining the API in a sensible order. I am also happy to report that the content of the book is much improved over the 7th edition, which was a confused mix of OpenGL 2.1- and 3.3+.The book assumes you are already proficient with C/C++ and have a basic understanding of linear algebra and computer graphics. If you are a beginner programmer that would like to do graphical programming, do NOT get this book. It will be way over your head and you will be disappointed. There are simpler alternatives - SDL and the likes. Again, the target demographic for this book is intermediate to experienced programmers.I would have given this book five stars, but the Kindle edition is rife with spelling and grammatical errors, even in the code examples! The spelling errors in the code examples make certain examples difficult to understand, especially when variable names change midway through the code. Not cool, guys (authors). Don't include code snippets that would generate compile time errors.

Meg Cabot is a guaranteed good read! This book is fun and fast-paced. I love ghost stories and Ms. Cabot creates an interesting world where Suze is a "mediator" who gets ghosts to move on. To where she doesn't know, but she gets them out of the world of the living. Suze is a main character I can't wait to get back to. Thank goodness this is a series! I love the setting of Carmel-by-the-Sea, CA. Especially since Suze is from Manhattan. It's a nice fish out of water story where the outsider becomes the popular girl by being herself. All the characters are memorable from Suze's 3 stepbrother (Sleepy. Dopey, and Doc) to Jesse the ghost to Suze's friend's Adam and CeeCee. I can't wait to see what happens next!

This book was both my introduction in the Mediator series as well as my first book written by Meg Cabot. This book is what made me interested in writing as a profession.The novel opens with Suze moving to California after her mother remarries, and she suddenly has a super nice stepfather named Andy, and three stepbrothers who she nicknames Sleepy, Dopey, and Doc. But Suze isn't like normal girls, she is a mediator, she can see, speak to, and even interact physically with spirits who have not moved on.She isn't happy with this ability though, and finds that the house she moves into has a spirit of it's own, Jessie who died when the house was a boarding house over fifty years ago. Her house isn't the only place that houses spirits, the school she attends is haunted by a girl who died just recently, and she doesn't want to move on peacefully. It will take all of Suze's abilities to figure out how to get her to move on, whether she wants to or not,The writing style is easy to read and flows very well. It reads like it really is the thoughts of a teenage girl. I couldn't wait to read the rest of the series.

When I read the description of this book I was a bit wary to buy it. It is obviously marketed for middle and high school students and it is an older book series with very little reviewers. Because it is the only book I have seen on Amazon with a solid 3+ star rating from everyone (and because I devoured the Pretty Little Liars books for the same target audience) I decided to give it a shot. I was surprised at how enjoyable it was. I found it to be a sort of lighthearted combination between the Ghost Whisperer TV show and Buffy the Vampire Slayer (I’m embarrassed to admit that although I am in my mid-twenties I still love watching reruns of the first couple seasons… can’t break a 16 year habit I guess). Shadowland is humorous and definitely kept me interested – I finished it in two short sessions. I only had three issues with the book that warranted a 4 star rating.I was a bit annoyed with Suze’s tendency to develop a crush on any guy that shows her the slightest bit of attention, living or dead. I know she is 16 but come on!The phrase “kick butt” was used waaaay too much. I understand it is a teen book and don’t want to advocate profanity, but I cannot take anyone who uses that phrase seriously and I thought it made her sound like a seven year old child, not the tough chick she claims to be. Considering worse words are used in overabundance, that I cannot say here because Amazon won't let me, I think the author could have matured the language a little or just found a new phrase to use. Another reviewer also mentioned her excessive use of “I mean” and wow, they were not kidding…Lastly, Suze names her new stepbrothers after 3 of the 7 dwarves and always refers to them by those names in her head. It got a bit confusing when their real names were used. She calls them the dwarf names on accident all the time and they never question it either. I just thought that was kind of weird lol I guess I’m just being nitpicky. These are just small things I thought about while reading the book, but nothing that would dissuade me from reading the book or liking it.If you’re sick of all of those overdramatic teen paranormal books and want something fun to read I suggest trying this book, if your pockets can allow it. They only take a few hours to read yet cost about $7 a pop unless you have prime or like to buy used books.

Easy to follow for a novice like me. As many have said, it's hard to get a clear understanding of the pictures because they are black and white. I understand publishing costs of color but I'd pay a few bucks more fore the color pics. Or, better yet, offer a website link that holds the color pics.

This book contains a complete step by step walk through of the steps needed to take even a novice grower from spore to harvest. Advanced techniques are also explained clearly, with plenty of pictures as well. It is a quick read, easily completed in a day as there are numerous full pages devoted to picture instruction.Subtracted one star because all of the information can be found online for free, and I did not learn anything new. However, for the person who would rather have a book in hand, this is a great one to get as it is more geared to the novice than most that I have read.

Probably the best book on the subject AND it's the ONLY book Paul Stamets himself recommends in his EPIC book, 'The Mushroom Cultivator - A Practical Guide to Growing Mushrooms at Home'! Paul Stamets is THE KING of Mushrooms and ANY recommendation by him should be paid close attention to!

This book is well organized and easy to follow. It feels a bit like a recipe book with a method and pictures for every step. Follow the instructions in this book and you'll be growing tons of mushrooms in no time!

Werewolf is middle of the road with most of it's changes being cosmetic.The rules have changed to the revised Story Teller system like Vampire and Mage. This doesn't make Werewolves weaker or stronger like what happened in Mage or Vampire. It just makes things easier to do. Since the damage system changed, it also means that many damage stats are reduced. Some new gifts are created, and Rage, the thing that gives Werewolf players a strong advantage, is toned down.Storywise some changes have happened as well. The Stargazers, the most enigmatic tribe, in the Western Concordant have left. It is mysterious why they did, but they claim it is to defend their homelands during the final days. Speaking of Final Days, this setting really drives that point home, every thing does seem hopeless. I really liked that being added to the setting as it gives the setting a much better feel, mainly so people don't act like Enviornmentalist who can shape change. This game is a very good introduction to the World of Darkness for beginners, that I'd highly reccomend.
