"Before I Let Go" was a pretty unique piece of YA fiction- I'm not sure how to categorize it, maybe as a psychological thriller. We follow Corey from the time she found out her BFF, Kyra, has died over the course of her short trip to Lost Creek, Alaska, the place she used to know as home. Corey left town several months ago to attend a boarding school, when her mother moved away. She was really sad to leave Kyra behind, but they promised to stay in touch and wait for each other- and they were almost there. This is why Corey is shocked to hear that Kyra's death is considered suicidal (it is believed she looked for a crack in the ice and drowned).The story is told in pieces- we have the present events, events from the past few years of Kyra/Corey together, and letters which Kyra had written but not sent to Corey (plus some stylistic writing as if a screenplay). Together, it makes for an incredibly engaging story. We get to put together the pieces of Kyra and Corey separately and together through their friendship. There is a big disconnect between the town Corey left and the one she returns to. The whole story is shrouded in mystery and grief- and it had the feel of a thriller at times. The town and the people in it had a very surreal feel, almost like Stepford, where you know there has to be more to the story and it's really creepy and you're dying to figure out why. This book ended up being a quick read for me, primarily for that reason- I absolutely had to figure out what happened to Kyra and what would happen to Corey.The pace of this book is absolutely perfect, and the descriptions of Kyra really brought her to life. Corey was less well-developed, despite being the primary character. It was a really interesting format, where although being told from Corey's point-of-view, the character we get to know best and understand the most is Kyra. I also thought the depiction of bipolar disorder in this book was well done- it goes through examples of both her highs and her lows, plus some of her coping mechanisms and thoughts about the disease. It felt pretty genuine. The rest of the story felt more surreal, and considering that Kyra loved stories and fables, it almost felt like the book was it's own story (maybe enhanced in the retelling). I'm not saying that as a bad thing- it gave the overall tone an interesting quality that made it all a bit more of a mystery.Overall, I think this was a really intriguing and unique story along the lines of a psychological thriller. Please note that I received an ARC from the publisher through netgalley. All opinions are my own.

Thank you Sourcebooks for the arc via Edelweiss. I really did not know how this was going to end. I enjoyed the characters and the theme of death and conquering fear. At times i felt like i was watching a scary movie. I look forward to reading other works of the author.

The concept is really good, though the back & forth structure of the storytelling gets annoying. There’s a nice depth to the characters of Corey and Kyra. None of the other characters are given enough attention to be very believable. The mental illness storyline is very interesting, but the ever-present supernatural, other-worldly backdrop detracts from that. As an older, more experienced reader, I’m looking for more. However, I do think this would be an appealing read to many of today’s teen girls.

The short chapters make this book easy to fly through. I have read better thrillers but this book kept my attention and that is not something I can say about all thrillers. I would recommend if you want a quick read.

At times sad, at others creepy. I can imagine an isolated town losing its collective sanity like what happens in this book. No winners here, only survivors.

The setting is one of the best parts of this book. The physical places -- natural and human-made -- really come through, and they're important. They're sometimes beautiful, sometimes peaceful, sometimes terrifying, sometimes confusing.Corey and Kyra's friendship felt so real and important and somehow both strong and fragile, like a Prince Rupert's drop. I've had a friendship like that (though it looked different), so I appreciated seeing that tension on page.I really appreciated Eileen, Roshan, Sam, and Aaron as side characters. And of all the other people in Lost, I found Piper in particular to be the creepiest.I do wish we knew more about Corey. I feel like I know her voice really well as a reader, and her relationship with Kyra over the past few years, but I only know a few other facts or stories about her. But ultimately, this feels like a book about Kyra and Corey-and-Kyra more than one about Corey, so maybe that's okay.I liked the asexual representation, but I wished Corey's questioning about her romantic orientation came through more clearly.

Creepy good book! Enjoyable read.

Just as I remembered in first grade. My teacher read this to us and I faintly remember but lovely Amazon has sooo many books to choose from and I remembered what the front cover looked like. Just read this to my second grader and he loves it. He thinks it's pretty funny, which it is. Kind of short but enjoyable.

As a child I remember liking this book so I got it for my son - I figured it was a book that featured another culture with characters that kind of look like us (we’re Korean) but when it arrived I was really surprised to see the dark beginning (a boy drowns) and the weird tale of identical brothers fooling the villagers to avoid being executed. Fortunately my son is too young to understand but I won’t be reading this to him again. Plus he wanted to know why the brothers were yellow on the front of the book - good question. :/

This book is a nostalgic gem for me. My mom read it to my siblings and myself when we were young and it's always held great memories for me. I had, however, forgotten how dark this book is. I was excited after I received it to read to my 4 year old son. We got to the part about the boy drowning and I thought "wait a minute..." but we pressed on. Then we got to them cutting off the one brothers head and I realized this was just not meant for young kids. I love this book, but maybe not for little ones.

I am a grown adult, and a solodier in the Israeli army, but in my childhood I remember reading this book over and over again. It was my favorite book. I must have been in a weird mood, because I actually bought this book to recapture the good feelinhg it gave me as a child. Well, sure enough, it made me smile and laqugh. This really is a great book for kids, and if you have kids, or if you drive a tank, pick up a copy!!!

I read this book as a kid and now I am buying it for the grand kids! Completely non-PC and I couldn't care less. A great story that I could imagine very vividly in my mind.

Don't let a single one-star review throw you off, this is a great book and it has been read to my granddaughter by her mother who is an elementary school teacher. The part that is supposedly so "gross" teaches children there are consequences for bad behavior.The book teaches the value of family members standing by one another in times of adversity and also how we may help others who are in need of our help. I personally read this book as a child and it came to mind the other day so I bought it for my grandchildren to read.The story and illustrations in this book are as appropriate today as when the book was first produced back in 1938 and is a great way to entertain your children (grandchildren).

I remembered loving this book as a child and lo and behold if course it could be found on Amazon so i bought it for my seven year old. The subject matter is prorbably looser than today’s ultra PC standards but upon revisiting it and reading it to my son, we were both enthralled. Great children’s book.

In it's orignal version, The Five Chinese Brothers had been an unforgettable influence on my language development and appreciation for children's literature when I grew up in the '50s. The simple illustrations have now been understandably deemed racist. I could recite the story from memory and imagined the identical brothers drawn in stereotyped caricature. Today it's a useful springboard for sensitive discussions with a fun and fantasized story to go along with it. I would recommend this book for those who are comfortable discussing race stereotypes with children and see it as an opportunity to teach.

I had this book as a child and was so delighted to find it on Amazon. It was written in 1938 and really sparked some great memories. I hope to read it to my grandchildren and share the wonderful story!

Very few of the multiple choice questions in this book are stimulus based, and none of the SAQ, LEQ, or DBQs are phrased to correctly or accurately reflect the phrasing on the AP test.Do not buy this book.

This AP US History Review Guide for 2019 is great! It really goes into detail on every section covered for this examination. It teaches history unlike other study guides. It covers the required information needed to know. I loved how organized and easy this book was to study. The answer key does not have explanations; however, if you actually read and study the written chapter contents, the answers are a no brainer. There is only one right answer. This book also gives out writing responses to give the students a hands-on practice approach. I greatly appreciated that, too. For that section the book gave sample responses that would work for those response short and long essay questions. Overall, I would highly recommend this study guide to all students. Plus, the pricing is unbeatable!I received this copy from the publisher. This is my voluntary review.

This is a nice book compared to other review books. It is printed well and in a font that is easy to read. The study notes are not too hard which make it easier to remember the material and the practice tests help you to polish up the information you got wrong. I am a history buff and while most of the material was stuff I knew, it wasn't hard to remember or understand.I would definitely recommend these study guides for anyone who needs to brush up on their skills for class or before a test.

This book covers everything from The Dawn of Colonialism - The Turn of the Millennium divided into 9 sections. It also includes sample essays with 4 practice tests! AP US History Review Book 2019 is must have for your AP prep!

Your taking AP U.S. History and may question whether you need a book like this, and unless you have an eidetic memory the answer is yes. I have always enjoyed history and reviewing this book taught me some things I either did not know or had forgotten.The book is set up so that you first cover test strategies, something that is always a good idea to review as even if you know the material you can get so nervous that you don't do as well on the test as you could have. It begins with how the area that became the United States as at one time densely populated by the Native American population, many of whom died after being exposed to diseases such as smallpox. It has a good review of the American Revolution, and the age of expansionism, and continues through some mention of the shifting demographics of our own time.There are several practice tests so that you can practice what you have learned after reviewing the book. It contains examples of essays from low to high scoring so that you can see the differences and hopefully help you write the best possible essay. Unlike some other tests, this one also contains short answer question, and their are examples of such in this book.I received a copy of this book at no cost to myself, this is my voluntary review.

The Accepted Company has published study guide books on a wide variety of tests. They seem to do best in the books for smaller tests, such as the U.S. HISTORY REVIEW BOOK 2019. It has a pretty large review section that covers many of the topics that students will probably encounter on the AP U.S. History Test. The last section of the book has four sample tests. There are 55 multiple choice questions, 4 short answer questions, and 2 essay prompts with each test. The only issue I have with the AP U.S. HISTORY REVIEW BOOK 2019 is that there are some typographical errors scattered throughout. This, unfortunately, is a common issue with the study guide books published by Accepted. With that said, I noticed the fewest number of errors with this book than I have in other study guides I have examined, so I believe the company is improving. Overall, the AP U.S. HISTORY REVIEW BOOK 2019 makes a pretty decent guide to help prepare for the 2019 AP U.S. History Test.

I like the structure of the book. Content is precise and concise, and the practice and essay questions are very well organized. If you want to score high on this test, this is a must have.

Really liked this book, but if you can only have one, Deconstructed has more info & pictures. This book cost less & is not as heavy.

I had a hard time to find a book about Andrew Geller houses, I found it on Amazon. I am french and I received it very rapidly. I simply love the houses shown in this book and would like to have one similar one day in my life. Great architect.

I have known Mr. Geller and parts of his family for over 15 years. This book can only begin to explain the genius involved in the designs I have seen. I have stayed in a home of Mr. Geller's design which was absolutely remarkable in its use of open space while still allowing for privacy in a home that at the time was shared by 7 people.I am thrilled that this book finally gives some long overdue credit to one of the pioneers of modern residential architecture.

I love this book. It's beautifully illustrated and well written. Certainly a must for anyone interested in modernist architecture second home design!

Kaplan acknowledges this and is upfront about the difficulty in not only figuring out what you want to do but also that what you want to do may not be feasible (at least for the moment).Sprinkled throughout this book are various exercises the reader should complete. The exercises are creative and should be completed to get the most out of this book. Some are short and some are long. Some are fun while others make you contemplate how many years of your life you have pissed away. Which is still fun, right?Kaplan takes a unique angle on development relative to other books on the market. It approaches situations and provides advice from a career perspective, which is fitting because the majority of Kaplan’s personal experiences shared within the book relate to business. They are concrete and implementable; though not comprehensive relative to other development books I have read. If you’re looking for a book to transform your life than I would suggest supplementing this book with another selection more focused on personal development (think The 7 Habits of Highly Effective People by Stephen Covey). But if you want to learn from a guy who has spent a lot of time with a lot of successful people and are particularly interested in furthering your career, then I would recommend picking up your copy today.

If you read career books, many are written by folks in career counseling and advising. What is unique about this book is that the author's perspective has been shaped by business and academic experiences. The author, Robert Kaplan, ran global businesses for two decades, ultimately becoming the executive chairman of Goldman Sachs. These experiences in working with, and mentoring, individuals in business in various stages of their careers, prompted Kaplan to think deeply about human potential, development and leadership. He left Goldman Sachs to teach in the M.B.A. program at Harvard, teaching a course on Authentic Leadership based on Medtronics CEO'S book TRUE NORTH.All of us yearn for success. The thesis of this book is that you won't feel satisfyingly successful without working to reach your unique potential. The good news about potential is that it is unlimited. Kaplan says you never get to the end of your potential as there are always ideas to explore, things to learn and skills to improve. Kaplan encounters a mix of folks in his executive MBA classes at Harvard and discovers many have great credentials and are achieving monetary success but are dissatisfied. What are they missing? Some older executives and professionals are feeling regret and bitterness concerning their career choice. He also encounters many individuals who are making less money, perhaps, but working in a field they are passionate about, using the skills they enjoy most using, and are happier than the folks who have pursued wealth or status at the cost of doing something in a field they loved. It's difficult to be truly successful in the long term if you don't have some sense of passion for what you do, Kaplan suggests.This book offers exercises in self-discovery to understand yourself better and to identify what you want. Its eight chapters are grouped under umbrella topics: 1) what you're really meant to do 2) know thyself 3) make the most of opportunities and 4) the extra mile. At the end of each chapter are suggested follow-up steps regarding taking action.There is a lot of wise advice in this book regarding attitudes and behaviors from someone who has been successful in business, mentored others and thought deeply about developing potential. For example, he discusses how to deal with setbacks in a career. Engaging examples of individuals he has encountered in his executive M.B.A. classes at Harvard who are sorting out career issues are integrated throughout the book and enrich the principles in the book.Kaplan gives examples of folks who are thinking of leaving their job or career because of a current obstacle. Kaplan gives examples of some of the entrepreneurs, or folks who worked for entrepreneurs, whom he has encountered: a chef who owned three restaurants in Rhode Island and was thinking of adding more but was unhappy, a retailer who co-owned a successful business in California but was thinking of leaving it due to conflict with her business partner, a student who chose to work for a small philanthropy organization instead of going into the financial services field like her classmates, and an individual who started his own money management firm. The questions in this book will give aspiring entrepreneurs some self-assessments as to what they really want to do. (Also recommend the book: Startup Leadership: How Savvy Entrepreneurs Turn Their Ideas Into Successful Enterprises by Derek Lidow who started iSuppli Company and sold it for multi-millions. Lidow teaches Entrepreneurship at Princeton. If you want a look at entrepreneurship to see if you would enjoy its rigors, his book is helpful.)Kaplan's central message is we should worry less about being a success and more about reaching - and developing - our potential as this is where happiness lies. He says there are many paths to accomplish this, and we should pick a path which suits us. This book has some ideas on how to do this.

This book is horribly mistitled. It should be called "How to Get a Promotion at Your Current Job". That title is much more appropriate.There is only ONE chapter (out of eight) devoted to (and titled) Finding Your Passions (and weirdly it isn't even the first chapter... It's third)... And even then it's just full of all the usual high school guidance counselor clichés (if money was no object, what would you do? Etc.) you've already heard a billion times.There are many references to "your firm". If you are trying to decide "what you're really meant to do" with your life, you probably don't work at any kind of "firm".I can't figure out all of the positive reviews of this book (fake maybe?). It's primarily about building relationships and improving your skills at your current job.If you work for a big law firm or consulting company and are looking to schmooze your way up to a sweet junior partner position, you should buy this book.If you are really trying to figure out "what you're really meant to do" with your life, there is almost nothing of value here for you. Sorry.
