I am a part-time professional. I have over 6 feet of photography books on my shelf. I can honestly say that this is rated in the top 5. The book explains the camera functions in multiple ways so that the user obtains a clear understanding of their significance. It is extraordinarily detailed yet the detail is needed for such a complex camera. I had originally planned to purchase this book and then purchase other D850 paper books when they are available in the spring.I wont purchase any other D850 books because I cant imagine what they would cover that this book has missed. I have only one constructive comment. If you are a beginner, read the section covering basic photography before the other parts of the book.
I’m an accomplished amateur. I bought the D850 because I wanted to upgrade from my D800. Although I was already familiar with the Nikon template of menus and settings, I wanted to be sure I was able to learn all I wanted to know about the D850 and not miss any of its new features and capabilities. This book did it for me. As suggested by the author, I reviewed the book with my camera in hand so I could relate to what was being described. Because some of what is described in the book was not new to the D850, I was able to skip over parts of the book. At that, it still took about 8-10 hours to absorb the information and experiment with the camera, just to get comfortable with the still photography portions. I do very little video, so I’m waiting to cover that portion of the book till I have a video project.I have the Kindle version on my iPhone and refer to it occasionally in case I need to refresh my memory. I highly recommend this book. The D850 is a beast. A user will get up to speed much faster and completely with the help of this book.
First, the description of this book on the Kindle purchase page is accurate. The book is a comprehensive review of a complex piece of equipment that takes you through it's systems and also expands into practical field applications. Second, it is well written, logical and detailed but does not overwhelm if you have prior knowledge of digital cameras. Third, the downloadable excel document recommending configurations for different shooting circumstances is very good and practical. Personally, I was upgrading from Nikon D800 and thought I would be able to just browse through and quickly get up to speed but I found myself engrossed in this guide. My tablet said it would take nine hours to read the book. That was optimistic. My recommendation is to put the camera on top of some books on your desk and your tablet in front and go at it. There will not be much need to consult the official Nikon manual. Incredible piece of work for an incredible camera. Congratulations Mr. Klostermann!
I wanted to learn more about the virtual horizon. Did a search and found what I needed. Had a problem with banding in pictures taken in Live View with Silent Shutter enabled under florescent lights. Did a search and found a warning about the exact problem!
Very informative. I think I should have ordered the print version instead of the kindle version, but I was in a hurry to get the material. The hard copy would have been easier to thumb through.

Thought I was familiar with the functions of the D800 series but this book opens up all of the value of the camera. As suggested the book should be read with the camera in hand. Also it is helpful to be reading on a larger tablet, rather than the normal size Kindle.
For a technical book, the writing is about as clear and well-organized as it could be. Still, the D850 has so many bells and whistles that reading about it is a bit like reading the tax code. I am in awe of Douglas Klostermann's ability to write so well about such a massive and dry subject. I doubt that it could be done any better.
