Homespun: Amish and Mennonite Women in Their Own Words

Review

Homespun reads like a leisurely visit with an old friend. It starts off with light, chatty topics before settling into the-deep-part-of-the-heart experiences, such as a young mom recovering from the stillborn birth of her little boy. At times charming and humorous, at other times profound and heavy, this collection of true stories will linger in your mind long after you close the book. M Suzanne Woods Fisher, bestselling author of Amish Peace Real voices of Anabaptist women from traditions as diverse as Old Order Amish to car-driving Mennonites open up about faith, family, hopes and dreams, and experiencing life s trials and joys with God by their sides. As a man who is not Amish or Mennonite, I was not sure how this book would resonate with me. I have to say that it did. The women s testimonies here are frank, vulnerable, funny, powerful, and often profoundly moving. Erik Wesner, founder of the website Amish America The short pieces in Homespun, as diverse as the women who wrote them, focus on issues central to the lives of Amish and conservative Mennonite women, including childbirth, cooking, in-laws, dating, mission work, home decoration, marriage, and above all, friendship. All the chapters evidence a profound Christian faith that makes Homespun a collection that will delight and challenge readers. --Karen Johnson-Weiner, author of Train Up a Child: Old Order Amish and Mennonite Schools Filled with wisdom, humor, and hard-won faith, Homespun feels like a lovely visit with trusted friends. A must-read for those who wish to better understand the lives and hearts of Amish and Mennonite women. --Serena B. Miller, author of An Uncommon Grace Talented Amish and Mennonite women bare their souls in words that evoke a whole range of human emotions. They were not all born with a wooden spoon in their hands, and they experience the same struggles as women everywhere. It was impossible to do anything else until I finished reading this book. --Romaine Stauffer, author of Loyalty Test

Homespun is filled with the personal stories from Mennonite and Amish ladies. The stories about real life happening and they are so inspirational. I recommend this book.

The sample made it sound as if the book contained stories about the Amish lifestyle. Instead it is stories about how Amish women live outside the community.

It was an inspirational read.

Each of these stories was about a woman’s heart. Family, home, and friendship weave together in these suggestions and remarks. I found something to relate to in each story.Back in the days of reading paper magazines, I used to look forward to the funny anecdotes and quips printed in the back of various issues. This book is like reading a collection of those! It also inspired me to renew my interest in writing down some of my memories for my kids…especially for my daughter. Uplifting, encouraging messages were so important to me as a young woman and a new bride, and someday my daughter will hit those milestones.Enjoy Homespun with a cup of tea and some delicious cookies. Savor one story each day, or read it cover to cover. These homespun delights are wonderful just as they are!I received a free copy of this book. Opinions shared are mine, and a positive review was not required.

I have been looking forward to reading this book as soon as I heard about it. Opening the book to start reading, I felt this overwhelming peace and comfort come over me. The stories each woman shares is one of hospitality, peace and kindness. I loved how one woman said how important it is to make your guests feel welcome in your home. They should feel comfortable and at ease when they talk with you. I can remember a time when my husband and I visited people that we had become acquainted with from church. Their home was lovely, but I felt a sense of uneasiness there. The couple was polite, but I soon learned they were asked by the pastor to find out what they could about us because we were new to the church. I was quite upset that I was being interviewed by this couple to see if my family fit the church. Reading this book has helped me to forgive that situation and to know that there are genuine people out there who welcome fellowship in their homes. They have no agenda; only a desire to share their home and make each person feel welcome.I loved reading about family meals. It is a much treasured gathering where everyone comes together, prays and shares stories of their days. I'm afraid that doesn't happen much in homes today. We live in the fast lane, where meals are rushed and some of the family members are absent. We take our family for granted and disconnect happens. "Slowing down and savoring life together over a shared meal is a ritual to treasure." That statement really opened my eyes. How many meals have I shared with my family at the dinner table in the last month? We are missing out on so much by allowing ourselves to become too busy with life and forget the importance of family. Each story shared in the book gives us a glimpse into the hearts of women just like us. They share joy, sadness and forgiveness as they open their hearts to spread kindness and stories that feel us with hope. I felt like I was sitting in each woman's home enjoying homemade goodies as we chatted about our lives. They were open and honest and each one expressed their deep faith in God. Family is very important to them and it is evident in each story as their hearts are full of love and contentment. One of the stories that really touched me was about holidays. I do not like holidays at all. I dread them every year. When my children were younger, I would put on a happy face, watch them open presents and be thankful to God that I can make holidays good for my children. I grew up in a very violent and abusive home. My parents told me they hated me on a daily basis. When Christmas came every year, I had to sit and watch my brothers open their enormous amount of presents while I received none. I cried in my room begging for someone to love me. I wanted a doll and a stuff animal so bad. I never got them, but this story in the book reminded me of how I should move forward. My past was something I went through, but I can choose to make the holidays cheerful. "Jesus came to redeem. Allow God to give you joy. Keep your heart open for it, for pain increases the heart's capacity to receive joy."Thank you to each person that shared their story. It has brought me a smile, tears of healing and an understanding that God is gracious and loves us unconditionally. I encourage everyone to grab a copy of this book and spend time with women who love with their whole heart, who welcome visitors into their home with joy, and lift each other up in times of hurt.I received a copy of this book from Read with Audra Tour and the publisher. The review is my own opinion.

HOMESPUN is not a memoir (I was kind of afraid it would be) but it is a collection of essays written by Amish or Mennonite writers. I am only somewhat familiar with two of them. I admit I went into this with somewhat low expectations--as in maybe they were trying to sneak a memoir past unsuspecting readers who dislike memoirs, but this greatly exceeded my expectations. Not only is it not a memoir, but it is readable! Friendly! Relatable! Even funny at times. Tear-jerking at others. And even thought provoking at times.I read two stories out loud to my family. One "Bone-Opp-a-Deet!" and the other "Stretched" because they were funny. The rest were devoured in an evening and a home-sick-from-church Sunday with no internet to distract me. I couldn't even listen to the sermon on-line. But that has nothing to do with my review. :)I'd planned to give this copy to the local library, but I'm not sure it'd be a good fit. I'm thinking instead of giving it to my daughter as she would likely enjoy it as much as I did and pass it on to her more conservative friends (not quite Amish or Mennonite, but a very very very conservative Baptist, which is technically the same, minus head-coverings.)If you are interested in different aspects of the Amish or Mennonite lives, such as family, unexpected diseases, relying on God to supply, and ever so much more you will definitely want to read this book. I thoroughly enjoyed it.I was given this copy free. All opinions are my own.

This memoir was quite appropriate for me, seeing that she was 82 at the time of writing it, and I share that estimable age with her--altho she DOES come from an earlier era--and has a less outwardly involved life-style than mine---However, many of her observations hit home with me--about the disintegration of our outer selves, and the amazingly youthful inward energy we are still capable of---Another point she makes is that a crucial task of aging is BALANCE--keeping just well enough, just brave enough, just gay & interessted enough, as well as STARKLY HONEST enough to remain a sentient human being--and of interest to other human beings! My favorite thought was this one:the long stretch of time we have lived gives us our viewpoint--we have watched generation after generation --and we see the same qualities in grandparents, parents, children working the same sad havoc--we saw the same wounds that we see now, caused in like manner long ago---We would like to warn and teach, but we have learned it is almost useless.anyway, this was a powerful 'notebook' for me, and it fits nicely into a collection of journals coafter a certain age--ncerning the meanng of life

I found this book from an article written by Parker Palmer in which he cited from her book, "you need only claim the events of your life to make yourself yours... My mother and my mother-in-law recently died at the age of 93 and 91 and I watched their slow demise from active women. Ms. Scott-Maxwell captures my own thoughts about aging, slowing down, becoming invisible yet defines life however inactive as enjoyment as accepting as oneself both successes and joys as well as failures and sadness. Her thoughts are a confirmation of my own thoughts and unspoken feelings as well as an inspiration for defining my future aging. Well worth the read. I know I will refer back to her musings for strength.

I'm getting to the age where I am experiencing the feeling of being invisible to the world. This book affirms that "I" exists and that while we old folks might all look the same to those who are younger, that great depth of thought and feeling can keep developing until the end.

The writer was born Florida Piers into one of those British families who tried to settle in Florida. (Personal knowledge: many of them tried growing oranges but were defeated by a series of cold winters in the late 1800s; they fled.) As a small child she encountered alligators and cotton-mouth moccasins; she survived, so the encounters are amusing rather than horrifying. This book is a summation of her long and productive life -- she was a playwright in the U.K. It is one of those books that are guideposts on the way to growing old. I had read it years ago and ordered a used copy to share with friends. So I am re-reading slowly and finding more in it this time around.

I keep buying this one and end up giving it away. She was an incredible woman with an incredible story and her writings are brief and to the point. Thoughtful and provocative.

Florida Scott-Maxwell penned exquisite paragraphs of insights about age, aging and being human. This is a book to savor and to read many times.

Interesting to read about the author's feelings about aging but she rambles on and on. It's sometimes difficult to get through.

Not a wasted word or thought. Lovely, thoughtful, honest writing that carefully measures a life and provokes much thought in the reader.
