Review
“A very important book, clearly explaining non-materialist neuroscience in simple terms appropriate for the lay reader.” (Jeffrey M. Schwartz, MD, Research Psychiatrist, UCLA, author of The Brain Lock and The Mind and the Brain)“The Spiritual Brain is a wonderful and important book...a necessary read for both the scientist and the religious person.” (Andrew Newberg, M.D. Associate Professor of Radiology and Director of the Center for Spirituality and the Mind at the University of Pennsylvania.and co-author of Why We Believe What We Believe.)“A refreshing antidote to the arguments offered by some scientists who insist that their minds, and yours, are meaningless illusions.” (Dean Radin, PhD, Senior Scientist, Institute of Noetic Sciences and author of The Conscious Universe and Entangled Minds)“A sweeping critique of the trend to explain away religious experience as a brain artifact, pathology, or evolutionary quirk.” (Publishers Weekly)In clear, readable prose, avoiding highly technical language, neuroscientist Beauregard argues merely physical explanations for religious experience are insufficient. Recommended.” (Library Journal)Lends scientific credence to the existence of a higher or universal consciousness. (Booklist (starred review))Drawing on Beauregard’s own research into religious experiences, a researched case for the nonmaterial—and ultimately spiritual—nature of man. (World Magazine)Beauregard uses evidence to show that the self or soul is not simply locked inside the skull. (Philadelphia Inquirer)I heartily advocate the purchase of this book (Perspectives on Science and Christian Faith)Mario Beauregard and Denyse O’Leary have produced a provocatively titled book covering an equally provocative topic. I appreciated this book because it was inexpensive and about a subject that is not usually discussed--the brain and the mind. I gleamed a lot of good food for thought and it introduced me to a field of science that I was not familiar with. It is important to understand what happens within the brain during mystical or spiritual experiences to see that we are not using some "God section" of the brain, but rather fully engaging our senses and perceptions. It also debunks the evolutionary theory that humans factored in an idea of God as part of a survival mechanism. If I don't give it more stars it is because it reads more like the author's notes than a balanced treatise. There were some parts that were hard for me to follow--but I got the general point, Then there is an interesting section of Carmelites and Christian mystics, and finally the author's own personal experience. It is a hodge podge sort of a book, but obviously put together at an inexpensive price in order to share their findings with us. Was it worth the price? Yes. Was it worth the read? Yes.
This book is absolutely awesome. The author takes a totally scientific approach to spiritual experiences and makes it clear that the traditional approach of materialist scientists is actually the approach of one religious view, materialism, toward another view that conflicts.with the believer's religion. He doesn't call it that but that's what it is.He presents the scientific evidence that supports many things that materialists dismiss as religion.
Helps me understand why practice at meditation and prayer bring so much more experience. And as a neuroscientist by training, i appreciate this academic look at the importance of spirituality.
This book strongly argues that non-materialist neuroscience is more true to the nature of science than the materialist philosophy. It points out that experiments can prove the non-materialist philosophy, but experiments do not support the materialist philosophy in many of the important spiritual events.
I have often been conflicted in attempts to comport logic with piety. The Spiritual Brain has expanded my scope of thought to the point where I think there may be no conflict just a lot more to learn. There is an interconnectedness.Glad to see some taking out inherent bias and looking at the possible.
EXCELLENTTHANK YOU
So much to learn about the brain, if you want enlightenment about how it works you must read it.
He doesn't so much make a "case for the existence of the soul" as a case against deniers of spirituality as a reality.
