About the Author

Curt M. White is an associate professor in the College of Computing and Digital Media at DePaul University, where he has been since 1988. Currently in his 37th year of teaching, he previously taught at Wayne State University, Illinois State University, Purdue University-Fort Wayne, and Dominican University. Dr. White has published more than 30 articles on computer science and computer science education, two chapters in books, and two college textbooks. In 1997, he chaired the ACM SIGCSE's national conference on computer science education and more recently served as president of the Consortium for Computing Sciences in Colleges. I was a bit hesitant to get the book because folks panned it for being terribly out of date. Thing is it's not that bad even though it does address networks that are obsolete. History is good and what the book omits can be gathered through basic research. About the only gripe I have is it's a bit light on some aspects of communications but then again this book is an introduction to communication systems. I have only read through chapter 8. But as a "comm guy" I would say it covers the material fairly well.

easy read...and well organized although some of the concepts are quite intense

Although this textbook is required for the course I am taking, the reading is much easier than any other text I have read. A layman can read and understand this text. I would certainly recommend it!

It still talks about hubs in this book, which seems crazy to me. I haven't seen hubs in action in over 5 years. But then it somehow mentions brand-new technologies like Zigbee and 10G. It's all over the map and the editing is probably where it needs to be improved. Perhaps they just add material and never take any out.

Well it was a retired text book, it's nice to have in hardback. Probably the most boring text book ever but I learned a lot about servers, networks, wire types and all kinds of electrical and data components.

About the Author

Michael Milton likes books. Before his first day of high school wrestling, he checked out a stack of books on technique from the library and practiced on his not-terribly-enthusiastic little sister. This was a beautiful book that really refueled my interest for Statistics (which I've been struggling to start learning...even though I know calculus and LOVE mathematics)...but it really caught my eye because it goes into detail about the R statistical programming language.The first few chapters get you going on a specific mindset of how to interpret data, which is VERY important to keep throughout the entire reading of this book.After that groundwork is established, you are taken on a really cool journey of some Excel features (don't freak out...those of you who don't know excel proficiently will be fine in the hands of this book) that you never would've believed were there! You can even use Google Docs to do the same things if you don't have a valid copy of Excel!Finally, R comes into play with all its glory...I would've loved for a deeper dive with this technology, but there are several other books out there in which you can get down and dirty with R (http://www.amazon.com/The-Art-Programming-Statistical-Software/dp/1593273843/ and http://www.amazon.com/Cookbook-OReilly-Cookbooks-Paul-Teetor/dp/0596809158/ are my favorites and I own them both on my kindle).I hope that eliminates all your FUD's (Fears, Uncertainties, and Doubts)...go and grab this book RIGHT NOW! You'll be blown away with what you'll be able to do after you read everything here!P.S. It only takes about a week and a half to get through it going at a nice, slow, and comfortable pace...if you're HUNGRY like I was, you can knock it out in about 4 days.

This book provides an excellent, approachable introduction to data analysis. Although most experienced professionals or advanced students will find this text trivial, it serves as a god starting point for those who are completely new to data analysis. The text provides numerous interactive examples using Excel and R, but the examples do not cover these tools in any great depth. If you're looking to learn more about statistics, data analysis and data mining, this book is a good starting point.

Different problems need different methods to be solved properly. This book takes various examples and lets the reader work through the problems. It is actually fun to read this book. Very well explained. Of course, not all the problems worked 100%, but I have not read a book with examples and problems that all work. Especially, some of my R did not work too well. Other than that it is a great book, and a great way to learn about data analysis.

I got the book promptly. It has that softbound textbook feel. but good binding not cheap or ready to fall apart. the intormation in it so far seems interesting and well organized. its in the "head first format" which means there is a lot of nice visual lay out and side notes and some graphics to make understanding the concepts by seeing them when possible. I like that format. It is still pretty clean and gets to the point. but I have only read and used so much of it at this point so I cannot go much farther into the content than that. -- in short I think it is a solid book to get if one wants to better understand how to interpret social science numbers, or other scientific numbers that they are shown in a way that they are wise to various ways that data can be spiked and spiced. how in depth I cannot comment on as I have not fully digested the book. But it is a book that is designed to be both read and used as a topical reference. And it has the "Head First" style keeping things clean but providing insightful commentary, context and graphical illustrations where it might really speed up or enhance understanding of a particular idea or complicated example. it also uses bolding in areas where you can pay attention to the new vocabulary you might want to learn in order to lay the ground work for even more technical education in data analysis. it even has a chapter where it goes over some of the more obscure plug ins for excel that are there for helping a person analyze data. I would basically treat this book as a nice survey of both the human technical sides of data analysis. it also covers things like data collection or effective data presentation, and as I said it refers to several readily available tools like excel for example and how they can be used by someone who wanted to know how to leverage their computer in order tame and extract meaning from data they have been given to interpret. -- I think that its a useful primer that is like a survey course in the subject sans the professor. But how good each section is I cannot comment on as I have only started with the book for a several weeks. but what I did read I found completely intelligible and because I am not a total novice at looking at Data, there were times I could use its nice formatting to skip past explanations I did not need because I already was familiar with them. If I fall in love with the book I may come back and say so and make my stars 5 instead of a 4 but at this point I would highly recommend this book for anyone who wanted a nice primer that went into to a very serviceable level of detail for a primer or survey type information source.

Head First continues to be my series of choice on any subject.I have to agree that sometimes its too basic, but you still have the option of quickly skimming through till you reach topics needing attention.

This book does a thorough job covering the concept of data analysis, touching on both the soft side (requirements gathering, mental models) and the technical side (Excel, R). Like other "Head First" titles, it does it in an entertaining manner that makes reading the book a joy. The material is presented more like an enlightening conversation with an intelligent teacher than a brain dump of facts and theories.

I have long thought that the most effective teaching method is to use a "present a problem" approach and let the reader's curiosity drive the learning.This book uses this approach.It's enjoyable and has helped me understand the basics of data analysis quickly.

Good introduction to the basics of data analytics, but if you are looking for more depth, look elsewhere. This is a good starting point for a beginner.

Though he only scratches the surface, he shows us some of the most fascinating of the "creepy crawlies," creatures that often have few admirers in the media or popular culture. From the fascinating world of flies to the invaluable leech to the hated fire ant to beetles, fleas, and giant squid and beyond, Conniff shows us the astounding world of invertebrates.Strictly speaking, Conniff includes one vertebrate in the mix, the lowly but extremely unusual hagfish, so it is not only invertebrates. Having said that though this was an excellent book, one well worth reading. Popular science writing at its best.

For a while, I'd wanted to read a good overview of the insect world. After searching for a newer book, I finally came across Richard Conniff Spineless Wonders: Strange Tales from the Invertebrate World, which fit the bill. Conniff's goal is to show that invertebrates are as amazing than most of the charismatic megafauna we all know and love. In fact, many of these bugs are even more incredible, with complex chemical tricks and the ability to undertake great physical leaps and bounds (relative to their size of course). Conniff's writing style is very easy to read and the book is intended for a wider audience (I suspect it might bore more initiated readers). I was disappointed that a few major bugs were not included in the book, particularly Scorpions, but I guess the book had to cut something out. Overall, a fun read and good beginning book if you are curious about the insect world.

Forget Jack Hannah and his media sound bites which teach you absolutely nothing about other species. This book is a must read for anyone who really wants to learn more about some of the most misunderstood and hated creatures on our planet. Easy to read, entertaining and educational, Richard Conniff spins tales guaranteed to shed new light on the invertebrate world and can be read and appreciated by young and old alike.Recently I was fortunate enough to spend some time interviewing this talented author and was fascinated with his insight and true depth of feeling for the planet. It is a shame that the media suffers from tunnel vision when it comes to teaching the public about animals. Over and over we are presented with the same information about the same animals which limits our understanding of the importance of bio-diversity. Richard Conniff has worked for both the Discovery Channel and National Geographic and has travelled extensively, and with "Spineless Wonders" and his latest work "Every Creeping Thing" he has achieved what many strive for but very few accomplish.Hats off to Mr. Conniff and if those talk shows had any sense they would book you immediately and discover what I already have, that you are an incredible resource for information about the relationships between humans and other species

Richard Conniff's subjects in his other works are often scientists and explorers of the natural world, and in this text he reviews the subjects of his subjects, much like the often-quoted description of the meat-packing company, Armour, wryly credited with using every part if the hog except the smell. Conniff's skilled,tight writing is an example of vivid, fascinating writing at its best, sending an appreciative audience into exploring the other trenchant discoveries.

Conniff's book _Spineless Wonders_ had me fascinated, for the most part. His subject: invertebrates, with about ten different chapters on different creatures, such as leeches, dragonflies, tarantulas, etc. NOT ALL POPULAR INVERTEBRATES ARE COVERED IN THIS BOOK. In fact, if there is not a chapter devoted to your favorite invertebrate, there will be little or no information on that beast. There are many examples. Jellyfish, starfish, bees, crabs, clams, octopuses and lobsters are but a few that Conniff chose not to cover.If you need detailed information about an invertebrate not covered in this book, or if you need more detail, I advise you to seek out a book on that specific beast. Also, you can look into Robert Barnes' book _Invertebrate Zoology_, but that book...is best used at a public or college library.On the plus side: there aren't many good books on invertebrates for a general audience, and _Spineless Wonders_ is one of them. Most folks, while they might be able to stomach ten or twenty pages on leeches, don't want an entire book on leeches. In fact, most full length books on leeches, dragonflies, etc. are indeed academic tracts targeted at serious collectors or graduate students and professors.Conniff's writing is usually lucid and entertaining. He held my attention until the end of each chapter... almost. Still, there isn't much popular writing on invertebrates in general, so _Spineless Wonders_ is well worth a look.ken32

Richard Conniff's writing style is fun and easy to read. And although some of the facts he pours into the book may be gross, it's so interesting you are riveted. I think everyone-science lover or no-needs to read this book. I couldn't put the book down until I was done. Just to give you some extra info on what's in the book-he discusses many invertebrates such as flies, hagfish, moths and tarantulas, devoting a chapter to each invertebrate. He includes his adventures with these creatures along with it. Even the hardened scientist will find something new in this book!
