One has to apply the information that has been read from this book and use it on the racquetball court. The information is very direct, and their is no mystery to it. One of the authors who contributed information on this book [Woody Clouse] emphasizes that one has to practice hitting alot of balls on the court, lift weights, and run sprints in order to get better as a player-Male or Female. International Racquetball commissioner Hank Marcus along with Irt player Jon Ellis give this book a very positive evaluation. The book has many pictures illustrating situations where one has too be hitting the ball away from the player, etc. The book has several chapters that emphasize all the aspects of game-conditioning, nutrition. The book also has several pictures of players who play on the professional tour. Cliff Swain, Andy Roberts, Mike Ray, Drew Kachtik , and Ruben Gonzales are some of the player photographs one will see in this book. I have to say that my play was really very limited and highly primitive. I only knew how to serve the most basic serve in racquetball and that was the drive, and that was the only shot I knew since the beginning. I was very fortunate that when I was playing the game I purchased this book during the time to help improve my play. It has been a couple of months now, and my play is alot better. I can do a Z-serve, a left and right drive serve, and my lob is coming there. I also learned to hit the ball away from my opponent and not to hit the ball to him or her but away from my opponent. Alot of patience is needed, and alot of practicing if one desires to improve. So if your a racquetball player who is from Moscow, Russia, or Tijuana ,Mexico, or from Houston Texas who wants to be more knowledgeable playing the game, I highly recommend this book too you.

i am a current teaching club pro and after a few lessons, i have suggested to my students that they look at this book for a superb instruction, strategy, and exercises through drills to take their game to another level. this easy to read book is more than worth the price of 13.56 they are selling it for......cheaper than a one hour lesson with me. Well worth the investment.

This is a very good book for an intermediate player who is looking to take the next step. The drills and exercise techniques are very good, but the amount of time the Author suggests is unreasonable. Use the skills, but use them in the time you have available -- you'll still improve.

I regretably have to agree with an earlier reviewer who panned this book as being too basic to be really useful for the more advanced player. I figured that reviewer was looking for "shortcuts" to getting good, without the hard work of practicing the basics -- and I believe in the importance of working hard at mastering the basics. So I purchased the book. But, the problem is that the basics covered in this book are too basic -- like how to pick a racquet and the trajectory of a lob serve. Those are things the beginner needs to see, but the better player knows them in principle, but needs help in learning how to execute them better -- not the "what" of winning racquetball, but the "why" and the "how" so that the skills can be practiced and developed. It's not that there isn't good stuff in this book -- there is. It does a good job of treating the fundamentals, but that's where it stops. If you've already got a solid grasp of the fundamentals and are already playing at a reasonably advanced level, I would recommend the "Advanced Racquetball" DVD by Jim Winterton which demonstrates the mechanics and strategies that will allow better players to take their game up another notch. A word of warning -- Winterton's DVD is very good, but it is so loaded with specific coaching information that it can be hard to digest it all. Sometimes you just want to yell "explain that a little better before you move on!" But at least, when you've been exposed to Winteron's coaching comments you know what you're not doing right and need to work on, and because it is video rather than static pictures, you can play and replay the stroke mechanics being illustrated.

It's simply the best book ever written on racquetball!

Book arrived on time and in excellent condition. The reprint is from scanned images and several pages are unreadable. Other than that an excellent book on the early days of conveyor belt design and application.

I would like to see stop action sequenced photos of the basic forehand and backhand strokes. There is no picture of a decent backhand stroke in the chapter entitled "Hitting Forehand and Backhand Shots" and only two instructional photos.All instructional photos in the book are of Woody Clouse a LEFT-HANDED player. Why would you use photos that are appropriate for only 10% of the population?The text presentation is quite good but the photos leave a lot to be desired.

As a biomedical scientist I really enjoyed this book. It is the sequel to the author's previous volume "The Billion Dollar Molecule". Both books provide a fly-on-the-wall account of Vertex Pharmaceuticals, an innovative biopharmaceutical company that brought two breakthrough medicines - one for hepatitis C and the other for cystic fibrosis - to market two years ago. Both these drugs were the first of their kind and have given thousands of patients a new lease on life. From a broader perspective however, the author's goal is to shed light both on the immensely challenging process of bringing a new drug to market and the brilliant scientists and driven personalities that make it possible.Werth's account of Vertex focuses mainly on the hepatitis C drug, with the cystic fibrosis drug playing a smaller but still important role. The previous book was much more science-heavy than this one, emphasizing the chemistry, biology and computer science that goes into the early stages of drug discovery. In spite of the intense scientific competition and research depicted in that volume (much of it spanning the late 80s and early 90s), Vertex did not bring a successful drug to market until 2010, underscoring the challenge of drug discovery in which you have to furiously paddle simply to stay afloat. The two books thus mirror two different phases of the company: the first dealing mainly with the science and the birthing pains of a new startup, and the second dealing with the transformation of the startup into a commercial enterprise. You will thus find much more of the business, legal and commercial aspects of drug development in this volume. Boardroom deliberations and the subtleties of drug pricing litter the narrative. Both books, however, provide an excellent overview of the multiple challenging stages of drug discovery, from discovering an initial "hit", to optimizing its properties to formulating it and finally selling it in the form a once-a-day pill. The account of formulation difficulties was especially revealing to me. As the founder of Vertex put it, taking a drug all the way from initial discovery to the market is harder than putting a man on the moon, partly because the biology is so complex and incompletely understood.Werth has always been a skilled purveyor of the personalities and egos that populate the highest echelons of the science and business and he continues this tradition in this book. Along with highly driven scientists we meet egotistic but talented lawyers, executives, government officials, Wall Street analysts and venture capitalists. The founder of Vertex is described as having a "reality distortion field" akin to Steve Jobs. The character descriptions are far more colorful in the previous book but this volume does have its share of sharp profiles: for instance one management consultant "dressed like George Will but sounded like Don Draper channeling Alan Ginsburg". One of the strengths of the previous volume was that many of the personalities portrayed in it - including academic giants like Robert Burns Woodward and industrial giants like George Merck - were fundamentally more interesting but the present account on the other hand does a better job of describing the vast and sundry set of individuals required to sustain the diverse drug enterprise. We also see how cruel the business can be, bringing failure to years of intense effort and laying off dedicated scientists who have given their heart and soul to the process.Werth's discussion of the two Vertex drugs also raises important questions about the future of the industry. The hepatitis drug is targeted toward a vast patient population, much of which is located in poor countries. The cystic fibrosis drug is targeted toward a small patient population, much of which is located in rich countries. The stories of patients in both groups - one of which Werth documents in detail - are heartbreaking, but in both cases the challenge is to balance profits with cures. In one case the company was compelled to charge exorbitant amounts of money because of the small patient population while in the other case the lack of wealthy patients led to lower revenues. Whether you are developing a drug for millions or for thousands, the R&D costs are roughly the same - and enormous. This is the moral and financial challenge the industry faces right now; how, when it is trying to develop highly personalized therapies for smaller and smaller patient groups, can it get away with both charging reasonable prices and recovering the expenditure on R&D that it can plug into developing the next drug. Werth deftly discusses these issues along with the underlying ones of FDA approvals and Medicare and government controls.Ironically, the successful Vertex story - which culminated last year in a move to a shining, sprawling new building near Boston Harbor - ends in a somewhat somber note. Many of the most important scientists - including the founder - who discovered the two medicines are no longer with the company and the highly-science driven approach that was described in the first book seems to have taken a backseat to commercial pursuits. The future of the company is thus not completely certain, and Werth ends with an afterword in which he discusses the fate of big pharmaceutical companies which seem to be laying off thousands, making incremental advances and cutting each others' throats to bring the next "me-too" pill to market. Unlike Vertex, many of these organizations spend much more on marketing than on R&D and are busy pleasing Wall Street and shareholders rather than patients. As Werth reminds us, if we want to advance the next groundbreaking medicines we need to remember George Merck's advice: focus on patients, the profits will follow. The story of Vertex provides both a shining example and a cautionary note.

Extremely interesting followup to his previous book (The Billion-Dollar Molecule: The Quest for the Perfect Drug) on the biotech company Vertex. Many of the characters from the prior book have either moved on to other ventures or moved up the corporate ladder. Werth traces the evolution of Vertex from a feisty startup focused on perfecting an immunological anti rejection compound for transplants to the more mature company with a different focus and portfolio that it has become over three decades. It also serves as a cautionary tale for the drive to keep a company afloat with investors and in placing too much emphasis (HepC) on a single disease and compound for a company's success. Vertex dominated the HepC market, but only for a brief instant in time. Eric Olson (who has left Vertex) spearheaded the cystic fibrosis program which is now the leading product and dominant revenue stream for the company. Read both books to see how the company started out to design drugs de novo from protein structural information, and by a very convoluted path ended up where it is today.

This book gives you some idea of what is involved. I wish that there were more books like this on other drug companies. This book was particularly good on giving you some idea of the gyrations of the stock price of these companies and what is behind the gyrations. Vertex brought a drug to the market to cure hepatitis C. Possibly one might come up with some discounted cash-flow analysis which would give a value for the company......but after Vertex got its drug to market someone came along with another better drug. How do you model that?I admire Vertex's quest for innovation. But 20 years of research before it can bring a drug to market is almost unbelievable. How they managed to finance this is amazing.The key to all economic growth is innovation. One of the vital issues is how to finance this innovation which requires so much research. There aren't any easy answer. The US seems to be doing better than most other countries.

This book is amazing because I never thought a corporation can have so many souls dancing inside, let alone a Pharma company. I want to say that I exaggerated only a little to compare this book's story to the 10 year Trojan War.What really touched me are the stories of individuals. The Bogers who "bore the torch" in the early days of doing great science and exploring the frontiers, the successors who financed and commercialized the founders' vision, the Wall Street analysts wanting to milk the new Pharmas like they did with the old, the patient advocates who wanted Vertex to remain true to its mission even when it is burning through hundreds of thousands of dollars a day... Those are real people competing viciously with selfish aims and playing out in a ruthless business world where billions of dollars would be won or lost on any single day. The deciding factors at the end of the day are two things: luck and balls.Who doesn't become exited when warm humanitarian ideas and cold hard cash were tossed together and shaken violently by a group of crazy scientists? I will have that straight up any day.

Assuming you've already read half a dozen of the better books* on Hollywood and the studio system in the "classical era" (the 1930s-1950s), and you're still searching for an over-arching narrative and analytical treatment of how the studio system -- in all its variations -- actually worked, this is the book for you. You can't top it. To compare and contrast significant variations on the studio system, the author confined his archival and secondary research (and his presentation) to two major studios, one "minor major", and one independent: MGM, Warners, Universal and David O. Selznick Productions. This scholarly approach necessarily excludes other major and minor studios, including Paramount and Fox, and the author's presentation of information in support of his analysis sometimes overwhelms. But, if you love this era and want deep insights into how the studio system worked and evolved, this is the book for you. The most sparkling chapters in Schatz's book compare and contrast the personalities and work styles of Selznick and Hitchcock. *Recommend you first read several of the following: Budd Schulberg's "What Makes Sammy Run" and his memoir of growing up in Hollywood; "Empire of Their Own" by Neal Gabler; the memoirs of Irene Mayer Selznick, Frank Capra, and Elia Kazan; "West of Eden" by Jean Stein"; The Last Mogul" re Lew Wasserman; ; and "Indecent Exposure" re the Columbia Pictures Begelman affair (the last two books deeply explore the business side of Hollywood, the evolution of Hollywood in the TV era, and the relationship between Hollywood West (LA) and Hollywood East (the NYC financial hub and anchor of the film industry -- albeit in the time frame beyond the classical era).

If you are interested in the history of Hollywood during the studio era, this is the book for you! It is what my history professors in college would have called the "definitive" work on the subject. That usually meant long. It certainly does not fall short in that department. Starting with the silent movie era and progressing to the advent of television, you will be familiarized with the technology, economics, and politics of the industry. If you are looking for a work filled with titillating Hollywood gossip, you are going to be disappointed. It is not that kind of book. I was a little perplexed by the weight given to various movies and personalities. For example, very little was said about the filming of Gone With The Wind. Yet, a great deal of space was devoted to the movies and careers of Abbott and Costello. Interesting. It is not a fast read and at times can be a bit dry, but well worth your time if you want to learn more about this colorful bygone age.

Books that deal with any aspect of Hollywood's golden age comprise most of my non-fiction, and now that I've finished "The Genius of the System" I'm wondering why it took me so long to get around to reading it. This is one of the best books about old Hollywood I've ever read. Schatz has clearly not just invested a ton of time in researching his topic, but has found away to weave a number of strands together so that the reader is able to grasp a wide-ranging and ever-dynamic topic without getting lost. This is a must-read for any fan of this era.

An excellent account of the history of the studio movie-making system, focusing on MGM, Fox, and Universal. There is much inside detail and information that brings added authenticity to the story, and the writing is lively and entertaining throughout. A gem!

I was looking for a book that would take me through the development of the Hollywood movie industry from the early days through the golden era. I found it in this book. It is basically laid out in a sequential fashion, but jumps from studio to studio and even from movie to movie. Personalities are detailed as well as conflicts between individuals and studios. The behind the scenes stories off the rise and fall of various studio heads and others were fascinating. For anyone interested in an in depth review of the golden era, this book is excellent. I learned so much I had no idea about. Highly recommended.

Good information but reads like a textbook and is kind of hard to follow. It's taken me a couple weeks to read this one when normally it would take me a couple days.

Usually reviews start with things like "If you like....then you will love......"This book gets into the personalities of the studio moguls, and their relationships. Each (major) studio is analyzed by their various strong points and weak points and how they each found their particular niche in the overall mosaic.Schatz give us a great over all perspective that is extremely interesting and fills in the voids we have when we only watch the movies. Movies are history and we can see the tremendous effort and genius that did in fact give us the Golden Era.

The author takes us through the story of four Hollywood studios: MGM, WB, Universal and Selznick. No mention or Paramount or Fox, and RKO. To make this simpler. And within selected studies refers to what he calls its driving forces. So that is the story of certain characters of studio system which he calls the system geniuses. Definitely not are all. But the material is interesting and can be read pleasantly. Separating each of the studies periods and speech about they separately. Rich in anecdotes.

I started with reading her first book "Hold Me Tight." Absolutely loved it! Then I went on to this book, loved it again. The way she frames couple interactions as attachment bonds completely opened up my mind and heart to understand love and how we get stuck in patterns that veil and close the door or love. Reading through the various examples of couple breakthroughs using EFT helped me realize that we have alternate choices in communication besides the usual criticize-attack mode or the withdraw go-cold mode that we all too often get caught up in when relationships get stressed. This cuts down to the core of relationships issues and distress, and gives awesome tools for "changing the dance" as she likes to say. I'm reading her book for therapists now, "The Practice of Emotionally Focused Couple Therapy," because I find this information so valuable and transformative. Sue Johnson has a gift for presenting science with such delight and joy that it's like opening an extra special birthday present that the giver is as excited about as the receiver. In Love Sense, Sue opens up the science of love for all of us. She begins by pointing out that our first instinct is to seek contact and comforting connection rather than sex or aggression. This idea opens up a whole new arena for understanding behavior and interactions. The idea that we must stand alone and strive for independence falls away for the idea that what we all really need is closeness and comfort. We worry that if we are "too soft" that we will raise self centered people but, in fact, we are mostly driven to be empathic rather than competitive. Sue reveals the science of her ideas in much the same way that Richard Feynman reveals physics - with joy and engagement. Sue discusses emotion, the brain, sex, monogamy. She addresses many issues couples struggle with over a lifetime of partnership such as making a commitment, parenthood, coping with the empty nest, retirement. Along this journey, Sue explains the common cycles couples get into and the emotion that is underneath those cycles that drives them. She uses examples from her work with couples to demonstrate what happens in these dynamics and how attachment styles and needs affect each person. She slows down the dynamics and digs deep into the emotion and attachment needs to expose what reassurance or support is needed to circumvent the cycle. In chapter nine Sue tells a love story and describes a betrayal between a couple, the opening up, understanding what was happening between them that created the environment for this fracture to happen and then the repair. This will be a wonderful piece for our clients to read to begin to understand the opening that needs to happen when people have hurt each other. Sue moves on to expose many of the challenges we have in our ability to be present with those we love. Throughout this book, the conversational style Sue has, her deep understanding of her subject and her passion for this topic are palpable. This book will be a best seller and I believe that it will create the revolution Sue talks about. We will begin to find each other, open up to each other, expose our vulnerability, understand our emotions and heal our interpersonal fractures. Thank you Sue for caring enough to bring forward these important messages. This is a lovely, mesmerizing book.

Sue Johnson's perspective on relationship dynamics is core to our current scientific understanding of love. She writes well and persuasively makes her point that the need for bonding comes from deep instinctual roots, and when our bond with our beloved is threatened we respond typically with either a fight or flight response.This is probably the most useful book I can recommend to my clients to help them understand the basic dynamics of loving relationships. This, and Dr. Johnson's previous book, - Seven Conversations - which is extremely helpful for couples who are working through distress. These two books are essential reading to anyone who wants to understand how love works and what often makes it go sour. Still, both these books can be difficult for the layperson to follow in places; and somewhat frustrating for the practitioner/scientist who wants really clear links to the research base she claims to depend on for her many assertions.The book has a set of references for each chapter, but these are unfortunately for the entire chapter and are difficult to link with the many individual assertions she makes in each chapter. Thus it is unfortunately extremely difficult to follow how her "research-based" arguments and conclusions are really linked to research. This is particularly vexing in her chapter which asserts monogamy is essential to human bonding, which is a controversial issue.Attachment Theory does not, of course, explain the whole mystery of love - as if anything really can. Readers who are looking for the "single silver bullet" to understanding their relationships and resolving relationship differences will be disappointed, although Johnson's work goes a long way toward this understanding. A convergence of contemporary theories on relationship goes further to this end. For example Harville Hendrix's work on Imago theory (based on Jung's Imago theory) is still essential to understanding how opposites attract (but you have to sort of subtract some of the rigid psychosexual developmental theory of Freud that Hendrix's work also hinges upon). Also, the work by John and Julie Gottman on what is needed to "Build a relationship house" is extremely helpful for couples who often lack a sense of basic direction and basic relationship skills - but of course the Gottmans' work is really a collection of useful observations rather than a cohesive theory about relationship and bonding. Sue John's work, and John Bowlby's work before her, prove a clear theoretical foundation for understanding relationships. You might think Sue Johnson's writings on attachment theory as providing the FOUNDATION upon which the work of Hendricks and the Gottman's can stand. Without the foundational understanding of attachment theory provided by Johnson the edifices built by Hendrix and the Gottmans can not stand firm.

Quite the eye opening scientific study of why we are who we are and what we can do about it. I have already recommended the book to friends and family members in order for them to see themselves through this view of how the mind develops though the actions of those we care about the most. The creation on attachment styles through the actions of others is a phenomenon that awakes our realization of why we act the way we do under certain conditions.If this was required reading in every K-12 curriculum, it would do the world a huge favor.Read it and pass it along!

IF you have read HTWFAIP in the past, this is not that clever of a re-imagining as to warrant a reprint. Perhaps a three page addendum?Regardless, it is a good read for the uninitiated and offers a bunch of lessons and habits to practice.

My Dad gave me a copy of this when I graduated highschool in the 90s but I wasn't "ready" for it yet, I don't even think I read it to be honest. Now I'm 37 and realizing that I've put my personal growth on the back burner for entirely too long. I had pretty much given up on making new adult friends. I had actually self-diagnosed myself with Asperger's because I was having such a difficult time trying to figure out why people (including myself) do the things that do. The realization that my marriage was being effected by my nearly empty toolbox of social skills promoted me to take personal responsibility and shoulder the blame myself for once instead of blaming everyone around me for everything. I grew up with a hypercritical Mother so I think I had promised myself that I would never be criticized again, even if that meant writing people off the instant I felt like I had made myself vulnerable enough to be hurt by them. I couldn't find the copy that my dad gave me so I ordered a new one and chapter 1 alone is changing the way I look at EVERYTHING. I've been plagued with mild depression/anxiety for 20 years and I'm realizing that I've developed some unhealthy defense mechanisms to cope with these issues. I never turned to drugs or alcohol, but the fortress-like walls I've constructed to deal with criticism (real or perceived) aren't much better for me. I've re-read and taken notes on the first section of the book several times now and my wife is noticing and she seems quite relieved, i had no idea I could impact another persons life so strongly. Like I said, I am only getting started with the book and it has already helped me enough to warrant a 5-star rating. This book has stood the test of time for a reason and I can see why now. The strategies are applicable to and helpful in all aspects of my life so far, from my marriage to my job, and even to the way I interact with clerks in gas stations. I've read numerous self help books in the past, seen a therapist for 3 years, been through the gauntlet of antidepressants, etc, and until now I thought I was wasting my time. I've been learning things all along, but I never learned how to actually apply the things I had learned until now. This book speaks my language and if your background sounds even remotely similar I have a feeling that you'll agree.

I wish I had purchased this book sooner.Dale Carnegie's advice has remained constant and applicable across the years for a reason. It's simple and his techniques make perfect sense. If you're anything like me, you'll be kicking yourself when you see how you could have handled situations differently. I'm being transformed from a socially awkward, timid and defensive person, to someone that seems collected and confident.If you're having troubles in life and simply can't figure out what you're doing wrong, this is a fantastic place to start. Good luck on your journey!

In my honest opinion, several principles in this book are repeated around the book. I don't see it as a disadvantage, because repetition is the key to learning. I did think several of the principles explained in the book are common sense, but I found that it could be easy for a person to react quickly to conflicts. This book has taught me the importance of staying in control and how beneficial it is to be in control of our behaviors and act in a way of service to others. The examples described in the book made it simpler to understand the concepts that Dale is teaching. I recommend this book if you would like to improve your skills with people. This book is especially beneficial for those who are working on their businesses and close relationships.This book is divided into four parts. The first half of the book discusses techniques in handling people and how to have people like you. The final half of the book gives instructions about how to win people to our own thinking and how to be a leader by changing people without offending them or causing resentment.In the first part of the book, it is divided into three principles. The first principle emphasizes the importance of avoiding criticism and he describes working with people as: working with people of logic. He further describes complaining and criticizing as a foolish task to do and how it takes a person of character to understand, forgive, and have self-control. Principle # 2 describes the importance of honest and sincere appreciation. Within this principle he describes the importance of ending our own thinking of accomplishments and desires. Instead, we must put our focus on the other person's good qualities. If being sincere, this will cause people to cherish them in their minds, even years later. The third principle involves influencing the other person to want, but not in a way that is manipulative. With this principle, he describes the importance of self-expression and connects it to the importance of thinking in terms of the other person, so that they come up with your ideas on their own, which they will like more.Within the second part of the book, it teaches six principles. The first describes how critical it is to become interested in other people because you will make more friends compared to having others interested in you. When he moves onto the second principle, he explains the importance to smile in a heartwarming way because it will brighten the lives of those who see it. Dale then describes the importance to recall a person's name in the third principle. He gives tips on how to remember and then explains how people enjoy the sound of their own name. The fourth principle is about being a good listener and encouraging those to talk about themselves. He then goes onto to explain again that people are more interested in talking about themselves instead of others. He further explains this point in principle five: Talk in terms of the other person's interests. The final step is to sincerely make the other person feel important because this is the "deepest urge in human nature."Dale describes in the third part of the book the steps to have a person think in terms of your own thoughts. He then explains that it is better to avoid arguments and to show respect for other people's opinions and never tell them they are wrong. because it will further push them away. If there is fault in your own behavior, Dale explains to immediately admit you're wrong without any doubts. If you are upset, he explains to sit down and counsel together, and if there are differences, understand it. Even in some differences, there will be points of agreement. He then explains the importance of agreement and having the person say "yes," at least twice. You doing this by looking into the other person's viewpoint and asking questions that cause them to agree. It is essential to have friends do the talking and have them excel us, instead of excelling them. When this occurs, they will feel important. To further the notion of feeling important, it is important to have the individual create their own ideas. He deepens this idea by asking questions such as, "Why should he or she want to do it?" and then being sympathetic towards their ideas. In order to catch a person's attention, you must dramatise the ideas you have. If all else fails, he explains the importance of competition and how it drives people to feel important and empowered to work efficiently and effectively.In the final part of the book, Dale again discusses the importance of beginning with praise and honest appreciation. When someone makes a mistake, call to their mistakes indirectly. This can be done my making their mistakes your own and explaining the importance of fixing it and why it gave you a disadvantage. He then explains the importance of asking questions that direct the person you’re speaking to, to obtain your idea on their own. He emphasizes the importance of having the person be saved from embarrassment, and then explains the importance of praise again, even if it is small. Dale then gives examples of giving a person a reputation that makes them better, in order to have the person be motivated to improve. After giving someone a reputation to live up to, encourage the person to correct their faults and make them happy to do the actions you suggest.

This volume is chock full of recipes of 'shack' food I've become all tooooo (!) familiar with since moving north.There were some familiar dishes and more delectable recipes that WILL be finding their way to my outdoor parties!I ordered the hardback and expected a thin overview of shack food but was pleased by the abundance of ideas, sprinkled with a minimum of photos ( I don't need a picture book when cooking, just good input from chefs more knowledgeable ).Descriptions and menus are clear and concise with good reference to alternating pages to complete a meal.This is a volume well worth your money if you love or have an interest in the New England shore food experience.

I've been a fan of Jasper White's for many years, but I held off ordering this book because I was afraid it would be full of lobster recipes. I realized long ago that I was not going to pay the premimun lobster demands in the south, so why buy another book heavy on lobster. Well, I was wrong! This is a terrific book of seafood recipes and side dish ideas too. The thing I liked best is that all the food is very casual, not the fancy stuff that looks great on the cover but that you'll never cook. The fish recipes offer ideas for substitutions if the ideal fish isn't in season or region.

This is a great cook book. So glad I ordered it!

After visitng Boston area we had the opportunity to eat at the Summer Shack. It was a 4 star experience. Living in Alaska we are not new to seafood, but the receipes in this book add a wonderful compliment to different styles of preparing seafood. The sauces are fantastic and the lobster, while not an Alaskan dish, was the best I had ever had! Alaskan Golden King Crab does work well in these receipes.Just a nice cook book that Jasper White shares some inside truths in preparing excellent seafood dishes.

I have a wonderful cookbook collection and this book is a nice addition. In addition to good recipes, it is a great reference book for information on equipment, cooking techniques, background information on various shellfish, etc. The only thing that holds me back from giving it five stars is that I wish it had more color photographs. I know this probably adds to the cost of the book, but color photos really add to the appeal of a cookbook, and it's one of the things I look for when considering a purchase.

It's the epitomy of geekiness to read a 200 page journal about the making of one of thousands of simple games made for the Apple II between 1982-1986.Well, for me anyway, The Apple II was one of the most powerful elements of my childhood - I directly credit it with my interest in computers, and ultimately a successful career in computers. Games were a huge part of that. And, as I now understand, the zen-like minimalism and focus on artwork, music and story were a big part of why I loved this game as a kid. It is a great example of restraint and balance in art, even though it's on an underpowered Apple II computer. There were plenty of games at this time (hundreds, if not thousands) and very few showed the attention to detail, and sought a balance between art, gameplay, drama and mood the way Karateka did. The cinematic treatment of the story really does have a huge impact, and sets it apart from all the other games made at the time: the long pauses in some of the music, the slow motion running of the guards as they come to fight you, and actually, the lack of music for most of the game except during transitions are just some of the elements that help accomplish this.The story of its creation is interesting because Mechner was only 19 at the time he wrote it, he was a "lazy" but intelligent young man bent on success and impressing the world. (I would argue that his self criticism regarding motivation is now better understood as the way a creative mind works - it must be balanced with inspiration and sufficient spaces between 'make' time) He was also a bit of an ego-maniac, balanced with a kind of endearing insecurity, both of which I can relate to. Ultimately, I relate to a lot of Mechner's tendencies, which is why I read til the end. I'm also terribly interested in the creative process he used, and was very curious about how much of what we know and love as Karateka was intentional vs. what ended up being a compromise between his vision, the feedback of others, and technical (and temporal) feasibility. Almost all artistic (and business) creations have this element of compromise, and these stories are always fascinating to me.The story itself is interesting in how it's interwoven with his work on some other paid programming work, as well as the pop culture narrative of the mid-80's: Risky Business, Krull, Revenge of the Jedi, Dragon's Lair, Asteroids and Pac-man, Gremlins, Raiders, Splash, E.T., Top Secret, Neverending Story, The Last Starfighter (with Dune preview!), Karate Kid, Temple of Doom, and of course Chuck E. Cheese. Amazing how much of what I think of as quintessential 80's culture - culture which probably had more impact on me than anything else - happened precisely within this window while he was working on Karateka.In the end, what's most interesting to me is the reality behind a success - the often uncertain, insecure, yet driven and focused effort to make a name for yourself and show the world what you can do. To me, this story is ultimately about reassurance - that even the most successful endeavors are rarely the product of 100% focused and confident actions, but instead the result of good creative judgment, intuition, and intense focus, in spite of a great degree of uncertainty about whether you're doing something worthwhile.My only complaint is that there are lots of references to drawings and some to film, which are not shown, and which I think would have added immeasurably to the story here. There are a few drawings which act as chapter title pages, but otherwise, this is seemingly a straight transcription from his journals, and nothing more. A bit of context/commentary from Mechner or others could have made this much more interesting as well. All that said, however, I enjoyed it, and take it as inspiration and reassurance that you can accomplish great things if you have a strong vision, and move towards it with limited compromise.

This was an amazing read for me. Not because of the writing, but because of the subject. I was a middle school kid at the time Karateka came out on my Commodore 64, and was instantly mesmerized by the game and its effect it had on people. The story was good, but it was the first game that actually had a cinematic feel for the play. You felt like you were part of a movie. Now this was a kid version of me, but I was in awe.I started writing games as a result of playing this one. I never achieved his level of success, but did have quite a few published while I was in high school. I even went on to work at a game company later after my military service.This is a collection of his personal journal during the time he built Karateka. It is raw and unedited. I went through all those same ups and downs as a kid (sort of still do as an adult!). It was refreshing to me to see something that I took to be an utter perfection was actually a labor of love for someone who struggled with it's creation.Refreshing read to see that others in the same field had a similar start and rough road. It is too easy to look back at your finished products and think it was obvious that is what was going to happen from the start. Every project I have ever worked on goes through a similar path of finding the right deliverable. You never start with a clean idea from the beginning and proceed to the end. This was a fun geeky read. Would have enjoyed hearing some of his coding travails as well, but this was very satisfying for a geek like me.

If your are a Karateka fan or a POP fan..... Or just a fan of Mechner in general. You will enjoy these journals. An excellent personal account and insight on what it takes to make a game. From programming to getting it published and the trials that go along with that, including some personal trials of game industry versus movie industry. It's all there. Once you are done with this, I recommend picking up his other "Making of Prince of Persia" journal. As it continues where this leaves off. My only complaint is that they end rather abruptly so I hope he continues to put out his journals for when he was making "The Last Express". But either way, a very fun and educational read.

Interesting story but man did it drive me crazy! It basically reminded me of how scatterbrained people, myself included, can be in their 20s. He's definitely gifted and can focus when he wants to. Its a great game - Karateka. I just wish the story could have been more well written. It is based off of his diary so that's understandable after the fact. I don't regret buying the book at all. Its just not my style of reading.

Found this book nostalgic. I worked in the retail tech field and distributed many of the game products named in this book. Jordon did good by keeping a journal as it gives insight to the "man behind the curtain" in video game development , which seemed at the time a hidden art. Luckily I got to meet many of the developers because of my involvement in the distribution of these games. This books bring insight into the creative mind which through shear talent created game experiences that defined a new era and art form. Really enjoyed reading this book!

This is Jordan Mechner's journal that he kept during the development of Karateka, and gives the most in-depth detail of the thought and design that went into Karateka. An absolutely mesmerizing and engrossing read.
