My absolute favorite retelling of the King Arthur saga, hands down. As someone who is generally very critical (and very much let down by all versions of this story at some point, sometimes to the point where I hate it by the end) I genuinely love everything about this series. Without giving anything away, I love the complexities of all of the characters and the details of how she made it fit with the original tales. (without the mistakes often made by many other retellings) I love the character growth (not just the main protagonist) and I truly love the way K.M. Shea writes female characters. They're complex, they're real, and they're strong in different ways from each other. And she doesn't make them strong by making the male characters weak either. All of the characters are well-rounded. Please do yourself a favor and read this series, you won't be disappointed.
I've only read two books by this author so far, Beauty and the Beast and MBRC, and like those two books I loved these books. I think what I like about these books so much is that all the heroin's have a good sense of humor about the absolutely absurd situations they're in. Break a leg falling through a skylight in the home of a man turned beast and his cursed household? Ah, the leg will heal, in the mean time lets enjoy the holiday. Find out a handful of your classmates and at least one teacher are supernatural creatures trying to pass off as human? Well since you know their secret, why not apply to work for their government so they don't wipe your memory MIB style? Get sent back in time because a the rightful heir to the throne eloped with a shepherdess and now an ambitious warlock needs a replacement? Why not, just make sure no one outside your circle find out that you're not a man.Now what made Beauty and the Beast great was the world, the story, and the character development and relationships, but it was played very straight with no stupid humor. MBRC on the other hand was all satire and had plenty of stupid humor, but had very few serious moments. KAHK take all the best elements of these two books, a beautiful world and great character development from BB, and a ridiculous scenario and silly jokes from MBRC, and combined them flawlessly into an entertaining story of a young women trying to become King Arthur. Now of course the book has some flaws, but I don't care about them, so five stars from me.
While this is not the first time I've heard of King Arthur being a time traveler, it was the first time I heard of the beloved king being a female as well. That was what first sparked my interest in this series.I am already a fan of this author having read most of her fairytale retellings and already knowing her to be a good author and extremely creative. It was because of her creative edge in her fairytales, I wasn't too sure about this series. However, when Amazon listed the box sets on sale for a short time, I decided the time for hesitation was over. I bought both box sets and was not disappointed. While there are many different versions of King Arthur out there and the truth clouded in mystery, this was definitely a highly interesting and seemingly accurate portrayal of the story. The author worked hard to keep her timeline matching the basic events that seem to correlate to the majority of King Arthur stories. I found myself remembering everything I had read, seen, and heard about King Arthur to guess what was coming next, but there were a lot of fun and interesting developments that I didn't think of.I was very curious about how she was going to make King Arthur female and how that would affect her relationship with her knights. Over all, it worked out well. Britt Arthurs is not like a lot of the female leads being written by the best selling authors (both male and female) today. She is a normal, down-to-earth girl who doesn't swoon over love and lose her head. She also is the kind of girl who is full of angst or overly self-pitying. While she misses her home and family, she realizes the important role she has been handed and how she can help to make people's lives better. She works hard to fulfill not only her role as King Arthur, but to help her knights and her people see that they can be more. She is truly inspiring. If you like King Arthur, historical fiction, magic, and strong female leads, this is a good series for you.
Ok, I read all seven of these books in 36 hours. Less, actually. I really liked "beauty and the beast" by Shea so when I saw this on my recommendations I went for it.I. Loved. Everything.I love the dialogue, I love the immediately interesting situation of a smartphone era woman being King Arthur, I loved the pacing of the whole Merlin thing, I loved all the secondary characters, damnit, it was just really enjoyable. On the one hand, it's kinda nice that Shea doesn't write sex scenes, but on the other hand, I WAS DYING FOR A SEX SCENE BETWEEN THOSE TWO. Oh well, that's what imagination is for, I guess. If you like cute romance stories where the romance isn't the only thing going on (not by a long shot), and also there's a woman masquerading as a man, and also time travel, and also storybook retellings with familiar characters and magic... You know what, just get these. It's a quick read (like, super quick. I wasn't exaggerating when I said I read all seven in less than 36 hours including sleeping.) Not even mad that there wasn't any sex. Ok, maybe a little mad, but just because I liked the characters that much. 5 stars.
I have always loved the tale of King Arthur and have read various books and tales on Arthur eversince. I stumbled on these and bought all seven books in a week. I love the first three books asBritt begins her reign as 'Arthur' and gathering of her knights. Also loved her interaction with Merlin, her foster brother Kay, and her foster father Ector. Must read for any King Arthur or Sword and Sorceryfan! Loved it!
