This oversize volume, which marks the centennial of the Smithsonian's National Museum of Natural History, begins with an explanation of how the information is arranged, including a discussion of the measurements, icons, and abbreviations used throughout the text. The first chapter offers a brief introduction to Earth, and its geology and life-forms, followed by separate, extensive chapters devoted to minerals, rocks, and fossils; microscopic life; plants; fungi; and animals ("the largest kingdom"). Each chapter consists of sections representing major taxonomic classifications and within these sections lower taxonomic groups are discussed. Numerous pictorial galleries highlight varieties of specific species. Scattered throughout are feature profiles that offer in-depth analyses of single specimens (white water lily, cane toad, etc.). Pages dedicated to a specific life-form include a chart that indicates phylum, class, orders, families, and species. The information provided for each entry (both common names and Latin names are included) is generally brief and limited to two or three sentences. I bought this along with a couple of kids' books to put on my 5-year-old's bookshelf. The photographs are amazing. They carry the story. The text is good, but a picture is worth a thousand words, especially for a child.There is always something to learn. I, for instance, learned that flowering plants evolved well before the great extinction of the dinosaurs. There are fossils of oak trees that far back. More than that, probably because they reproduce by seeds, it appears that plants survived that event better than animals.This book gets a lot of attention from guests to my home in Ukraine. It is the kind of thing that Americans continue to do well. I am gratified to add that it is delightfully low-key on sensitive topics such as global warming. They simply want to display nature in all its glory, and do a great job.
If you grew up in a house like mine, there were a few big, lumbering volumes that you'd return to year after year, whatever your age, to browse through, look at the pictures, consume a bit of trivia, and absorb knowledge from by osmosis. And even as an adult, you still remember them and the hours that you've spent over the years look at them.This is just such a book. Beautiful images, wonderful, broad content that is informative and surprisingly deep, both for kids and for adults. Lots of pages, lots of heft. Not a throwaway "pictopedia" at all, but a good general reference for Earth science and biology.Heavy. Heavy, heavy, heavy in the best way, with thousands of glossy pages that keep kids and adults alike engrossed for hours on end. Absolutely worth it at double the price. Get it and keep it on your coffee table and watch as everyone reaches for it, opens it, and immediately starts commenting on the things—educational things, real things—that they're surprised and delighted by inside.The perfect antidote to our social media age and malaise.
We have loved using this book with our other homeschool science materials. My kids now prefer it to other supplemental books that we have. The organization is perfect, and the pages aren't cluttered with information like some books. It shows several examples of each species with just a little information. The pictures are excellent. I would highly recommend this book if you have elementary age children. It will hold their interest for hours!
Fantastic Guide for anyone wanting to learn about the nature around us. I'm an Illustrator and was looking for a visual guide like this to help with creature designs and so forth. The book is organized very well, and it's great to be able to flip to a specific page to use as a reference. The plus side is I'm an animal lover as well and this makes fantastic reading and learning as well!
Bought this book as a Christmas gift for my boyfriend who loves natural science. We keep it as a coffee table book and our guests ALWAYS pick it up and flip through it whether they're interested in science or not. It's funny seeing which animals or plants each guest will flip to. Sometimes when we're sitting around bored in the evening, we'll pick an animal and find it in the glossary just to look at all the pictures of related animals. This book is MASSIVE and has hundreds and hundreds of pictures. Would definitely recommend it to anyone looking for a neat gift.
Our 12-year old son saw this book at camp last summer and loved it. We knew we wanted to get it for him for Christmas and were excited to see that Amazon had it. The first time we got it the cover was ripped and bent but they sent us another right away and packaged it better so there were no tears or wrinkles! He loves it! He enjoys flipping through randomly and also reading page by page. He shares out information he reads and says, "Isn't that crazy?" or "Look at this bird!" It's a great book to have as there is SO much to look at and talk about! A great resource for the nature lover, book lover, outdoor type, or knowledge hound! Great images and info!
I waited a while before I bought this book and I do not know why it took me so long! DK Publishing is an excellent keyword to search when you want some non-fiction to keep learning. I love natural history and this book did not disappoint. DK really knows how to organize their books and has the contact that is interesting to learn and no fluff meaning you get all the good information that is easy to find. This book is excellent for families or people like me who just have a passion for learning! I have sooo many books from DK Publishing and I love them all! DK- seriously you need to hire me! I love your products and recommend them all time time. Don't think, just buy :)
This book is $50 in the Smithsonian Museum of Natural History. It is an excellent reference guide to all artifacts in the museum (including the Hope diamond!) and is a great coffee table book. After visit the museum, I used this book to review facts after our trip to DC and was able to spend quality time with my daughter going over the pictures and interesting facts one section at a time.This is a well-bound book with thick, colorful pages. Anything DK publishes is a quality book. Go to the museum, but buy the book on Amazon. You'll save a LOT of money!
