I am a software developer by trade and I have always been interested specifically in artificial intelligence (and to a lesser degree, computer learning). This book is an overview of some of the subtopics in these fields, though it is not typical in the approach. Instead of addressing each in a theoretical, scholarly manner like a textbook, it instead provides a much more hands-on approach and leads the reader through a series of exercises designed to demonstrate the material. The approach is engaging and actually fun.First, a word about computer languages: the author explains that the primary languages in used here are Python, C++ and Javascript, though other languages can be used. I personally like Perl and C++, so as I work through the examples and learn I have been using Perl, and it works well enough for me. I could possibly make life easier on myself by using a different language, but the idea is to learn the material, not struggle with a computer language.Also: It really helps to have a mathematical background. The author presents several mathematical formulas to back up the material and explain the methods, and for someone who isn’t mathematically inclined these will potentially be intimidating. If you aren’t strong in math this will hinder understanding but will not be a complete show-stopper.The author presents ten exercises that demonstrate an abstract topic in AI and/or machine learning. The first exercise is described as helping a turtle escape a bag. This is the same base process as a breadth-first search, though there are some additional factors in the overall system that complicate the calculations. The next exercise builds on the first and recreates the bag with data captured from the first exercise. Not all exercises are related, though, and many are independent of the others. One particular exercise provides an interesting approach to creating artificial life using the classic Game of Life as a starting point to a more complex variation.The formula this book follows is consistent across all of the exercises. The author presents the problem to be solved, a mission statement, a how-to section, implementation, analysis of the result and finally topics for further learning. This works well.This is not a comprehensive study on either machine learning or artificial intelligence. If it was so, it would be a huge book weighing several pounds (and probably would have more errors due to the sheer quantity of material). What is here, though, is a good starting point with a fun introduction. As I worked with this book I felt it would be a good book for use in a classroom as a lab book for advanced students.If you have an interest in computer learning or artificial intelligence, this is a nice starting point. It’s not as heady and intellectual as many others are and it does not rely on the theory to carry itself. Instead, it is a work book that can be done outside of a classroom and worked at your own pace. The material is interesting and the exercises more engaging. It isn’t a comprehensive study of the whole field, but more of an involved introduction. This is an easy book to recommend, based on my work with it.

McCoy's third title of the series, Indiana Jones and the Hollow Earth, strays farther from the film formula than his two previous, but lacks cohesion in plot and style. The book attempts an epic sweep, but feels overly-long with disparate elements cobbled together uncomfortably into one narrative. The book would have been more successful as two loosely-connected novellas. The first taking place in the American West and New Orleans (in search of gold, the fear and realization of being buried alive, and the duel with Belloq) and the second, an Arctic adventure to follow a previous explorer's journal in a search for a lost subterranean civilization. The journal appears and disappears, as do characters tied with it. We have similar details overlooked here and there (presumably to keep this from being a 500 page tome). The last fantastic/ supernatural thread as Jones leads an ensemble group inexorably toward Verne or Burroughs territory is disappointing and relies on the cartoonish notion of stone reliefs of skeletons and gargoyles coming to life and attacking. McCoy does create a few interesting characters for Jones to lead, including the bisexual Ulla and the youthful whiz kid Sparks. I wouldn't mind seeing them appear elsewhere, but doubt they will. I felt at times that the other characters were so strong that Jones seemed a bit too subdued to be the Jones of the films. The ensemble idea, though, was an interesting one, especially in the context of this being an earlier, perhaps more formative adventure.I found the lack of focus in the narrative made me lack focus as a reader. I could put the book down for weeks at a time and not really care about the next chapter. I finished it though and have far less regard for it than the more successful first two McCoy books.

Indiana Jones and the Hollow Earth is a good book for any Indiana Jones fan, it has mystery, plenty of evil Nazi's for Indy to fight, and the essential female companion, times two.

The characters were shallow, the plot thin, and the action inconsistent with the plot. However, most of the Indiana Jones series are written as simple Saturday afternoon serials, where the belief factor is put on hold. It seems that most books on comic book/film characters are weak and with weak plots. I will not purchase another Indiana Jones book, once was sufficient for me to realize they are written more for Middle School readers than for adults.

It is not the mere "Indiana Jones' Adventure" that interested me, but the way the "Hollow Earth" mystery is dealt with in this book (besides, I'm an "Indiana Jones fan"!).

Page 262: "Not only are you smart and strong, but you are beautiful as well. A very rare combination in any individual."That was Indy referring to the beautiful Danish scientist, Ulla Tornaes who specializes in underground science. For the latest adventure, Indy needs her expertise. Ulla is a lady with an attitude and she doesn't believe it was indeed Indy that she's rescued and fished out of the underground cave in an earlier part of the story. She keeps referring him as Mr Jones and refuses to call him Dr Jones. What's even funnier is that she thinks Indianapolis Jones is the real famed adventurer even when Indy tries his best to tell her that HE is the Indiana Jones she's kept raving about. She refuses to listen to him until later when his pilot friend, Clarence confirms Indy's identify. I have enjoyed the funny exchange between that two.In this instalment, Indy is forced to traverse the Artic to retrieve a canister that contains the crystal skull. With a team of military folks, they fly the B-18P (P for Polar), also affectionately called the Penguin by Indy's copilot friend, Clarence. The name seems to rub off on the others too. But that's all right. Indy forges a close friendship with one of the seven members named Sparks, a 17-year-old radio genius (also the youngest). Sparks has a deep respect and awe for Indy. The adventure gets even more treacherous when Indy, Ulla and Sparks are separated from the rest of the team, floating away in a large chunk of ice. Remember Alecia Dunstin, the beautiful red-haired psychic whom Indy loves? She appears in this story but this time on the Nazi's side.It is a satisfying read and one that gets me glued to my seat. I'm halfway through THE SECRET OF THE SPHINX which is the last book in the series. I have totally enjoyed this one.

I ordered this book for my husband, who teachers AP Computer Science and Robotics Programming classes at his high school. He has said that this book is great, and is even considering using it as a textbook next year.Pros:++ It starts with the basics, and the author assumes that the reader has no knowledge of the Raspberry Pi. If you already have a foundation, you can skip ahead.++ The level is such that it can be easily read and understood by a younger audience and an older one.++ Includes information on both the software and the hardware aspects of the Raspberry Pi.++ Has interesting projects that are clearly explained.Cons:--The book doesn't have an index, which makes it harder to find information.--The code samples don't include line numbers, which makes it hard to refer to things.

As a Programmer who have never coded in Python before, I found this book and it's examples quite good. Got me to where I needed to be to take things to a whole new level and make learning Python easy. If you are not already a seasoned programmer, this might be a bit more challenging because you have to learn how programming works while also learning Python. Certainly not where I would start, mostly because Python syntax is quite different from most other commonly used languages.5 star because it is exactly what it says it is and does a great job showing how to program in Python.

I have bought several Pi books for self edification. This 2nd ed book by Simon Monk is definitely one of the better written ones as a "INTRO" to this subject matter- Pi and Python. It is presented in a self tutorial style format made it a great read that perked ones interest to want to learn!!! Concise, well written and apparently reviewed prior to publishing compared to other texts I have acquired. Great Learning format that builds with each chapter in an organized manner. As a 50+ yr/o self learning a new field, this text is a GO-To-Text. I personally like a hard copy of reference materials, besides online when away from home. Keep up the good work Simon and staff.

Cannot go wrong with Simon Monk, his take on RPI and arduino programming is easy to understand and his examples are amazing.

My 13 year old son said this was good. Gave him some ideas.

The Python portion of the book is very practical and handy for getting the Pi interfaced with the real world. I'm not through the entire book yet, but I believe it was a good purchase.

this book is a lot of fun to me. I have been able to get only about one third of the examples I try on my raspberry pi to work when I try them so far, but have a lot of fun with the book. I have several fun dice games from the book I find very interesting.

This a great book on programming Python for the Raspberry Pi. It takes a step by step approach to Python for the Raspberry Pi and clarifies the differences between Python 2 and Python 3. Easy to follow examples that gets you started straight away.

OMG yes. This is worth it just for the entertainment value alone. Already turned it into a game player and love it. Can't wait for the next project. Every SD card is a new project. Love it.
