McCoy's third title of the series, Indiana Jones and the Hollow Earth, strays farther from the film formula than his two previous, but lacks cohesion in plot and style. The book attempts an epic sweep, but feels overly-long with disparate elements cobbled together uncomfortably into one narrative. The book would have been more successful as two loosely-connected novellas. The first taking place in the American West and New Orleans (in search of gold, the fear and realization of being buried alive, and the duel with Belloq) and the second, an Arctic adventure to follow a previous explorer's journal in a search for a lost subterranean civilization. The journal appears and disappears, as do characters tied with it. We have similar details overlooked here and there (presumably to keep this from being a 500 page tome). The last fantastic/ supernatural thread as Jones leads an ensemble group inexorably toward Verne or Burroughs territory is disappointing and relies on the cartoonish notion of stone reliefs of skeletons and gargoyles coming to life and attacking. McCoy does create a few interesting characters for Jones to lead, including the bisexual Ulla and the youthful whiz kid Sparks. I wouldn't mind seeing them appear elsewhere, but doubt they will. I felt at times that the other characters were so strong that Jones seemed a bit too subdued to be the Jones of the films. The ensemble idea, though, was an interesting one, especially in the context of this being an earlier, perhaps more formative adventure.I found the lack of focus in the narrative made me lack focus as a reader. I could put the book down for weeks at a time and not really care about the next chapter. I finished it though and have far less regard for it than the more successful first two McCoy books.
Glad amazon had this in stock so i can go on another adventure with Indiana Jones and see what troubles he gets himself in and how he is able to get out and what he finds in life jounry.

Indiana Jones and the Hollow Earth is a good book for any Indiana Jones fan, it has mystery, plenty of evil Nazi's for Indy to fight, and the essential female companion, times two.
The characters were shallow, the plot thin, and the action inconsistent with the plot. However, most of the Indiana Jones series are written as simple Saturday afternoon serials, where the belief factor is put on hold. It seems that most books on comic book/film characters are weak and with weak plots. I will not purchase another Indiana Jones book, once was sufficient for me to realize they are written more for Middle School readers than for adults.
It is not the mere "Indiana Jones' Adventure" that interested me, but the way the "Hollow Earth" mystery is dealt with in this book (besides, I'm an "Indiana Jones fan"!).

Page 262: "Not only are you smart and strong, but you are beautiful as well. A very rare combination in any individual."That was Indy referring to the beautiful Danish scientist, Ulla Tornaes who specializes in underground science. For the latest adventure, Indy needs her expertise. Ulla is a lady with an attitude and she doesn't believe it was indeed Indy that she's rescued and fished out of the underground cave in an earlier part of the story. She keeps referring him as Mr Jones and refuses to call him Dr Jones. What's even funnier is that she thinks Indianapolis Jones is the real famed adventurer even when Indy tries his best to tell her that HE is the Indiana Jones she's kept raving about. She refuses to listen to him until later when his pilot friend, Clarence confirms Indy's identify. I have enjoyed the funny exchange between that two.In this instalment, Indy is forced to traverse the Artic to retrieve a canister that contains the crystal skull. With a team of military folks, they fly the B-18P (P for Polar), also affectionately called the Penguin by Indy's copilot friend, Clarence. The name seems to rub off on the others too. But that's all right. Indy forges a close friendship with one of the seven members named Sparks, a 17-year-old radio genius (also the youngest). Sparks has a deep respect and awe for Indy. The adventure gets even more treacherous when Indy, Ulla and Sparks are separated from the rest of the team, floating away in a large chunk of ice. Remember Alecia Dunstin, the beautiful red-haired psychic whom Indy loves? She appears in this story but this time on the Nazi's side.It is a satisfying read and one that gets me glued to my seat. I'm halfway through THE SECRET OF THE SPHINX which is the last book in the series. I have totally enjoyed this one.
