About the Author
DR. FREDERICK HOWARD TAYLOR (1862-1946) was a British missionary to China and the son, James Hudson Taylor, the founder of China Inland Mission. He completed his diploma at the Royal London Hospital in 1888 Howard and his wife, GERALDINE, wrote several books about his father¿s ministry and their own experiences in China.GERALDINE TAYLOR (1862-1948) was born in London and as a young lady had a burden for the downcast and depressed girls who worked in the factories in the east end of London. For a number of years she had a very fruitful ministry among the factory girls helping to elevate the downtrodden. In 1888 she felt the call of God to missionary service and, under the China Inland Mission, went to China. It was here that she met and married Howard Taylor and embarked on a very rich, long ministry in China and around the world. They were greatly used of the Lord to challenge people for missions, particularly missions in China.

There are plenty of other helpful reviews on the content of this book, of which I have little more to add other than my agreement with their positive comments. However, there's very little in the way of reviews of the Kindle version of this book, which I thought I would now add.Two things to say about the Kindle edition:1) It reads very much like an OCR scanned version of the original book, but with very little subsequent proof-reading/editing. When you read the Kindle book, you will have no difficulty in reading the words on the page (letter-for-letter, they're all correct), but you will struggle a bit with incorrect formatting.This is most obvious when the author quotes Hudson Taylor's words for himself. I imagine in the original printed form, Hudson Taylor's words would have been written with indented paragraphs to delineate them from the author's own words. In the Kindle edition, this indentation is missed, so what you read is the authors words, Hudson Taylor's words, then the author's words again, with no actual quotation marks or paragraph indentation to indicate whose words are whose.2) This is the original, unrevised edition of the book "Hudson Taylor's Spiritual Secret" that was originally published in 1932. Subsequently, the language of the book reflects the language of that era, and is more difficult to read for modern contemporary readers. There have been been multiple other reprints/editions of the book that have subsequently been released under different publishers, some with fancy forewards added in. But the version I would recommend is the one edited by Gregg Lewis, which was authorised by the Overseas Mission Fellowship (the mission organisation that Hudson Taylor founded) and updated the book's language to reflect a more modern and readable tone.Sadly, despite the Gregg Lewis revised edition being over two decades old (being first published in 1990), as far as I'm aware there's no Kindle edition available for it yet, so you'll have to look to paperback/hardback to find that edition. If you find the Amazon page for the Gregg Lewis edition of the book, then click "Kindle Edition", it takes you here, which is misleading as these are clearly different books.For the reasons stated above, I can only really give the Kindle edition 3 stars, rather than the 5 I otherwise would have awarded it had the above issues been addressed.
Excellent and inspiring story of Hudson Taylor whose secret was prayer. At 21 he left for China with little backing and quickly learned to read and speak the language, no small task. Similar to the Apostle Paul who took the gospel to Europe Hudson was driven to reach all of China. His "inland Mission" continues today. Through the years Hudson suffered severe depression possibly due to his family hardships. I note this problem is similar to those who embark such missions and also be a caring father. Livingstone in his African mission is another such example.This book is definitely worth reading.. Lynn Berntson
This book about one of the modern heroes of the Christian faith should probably be unofficial required reading for all Christians. Before I read it, I had heard about Hudson Taylor many times but had never taken the time to read about the man and his mission. This book was penned by his son and daughter-in-law in 1932, and the literary language of the times is quite evident throughout the book. Many direct quotes by Mr. Taylor himself were included which had even more quaintly archaic language, which is why I gave the book four rather than five stars. At times I had to push myself to get past the distinctly old-fashioned literary style, but having read mostly from the KJV Bible, I was helped in that regard. I did find myself at times longing for a more contemporary writing style, but the story was so strong and compelling I found myself turning the pages nonetheless. I think any attempt to "modernize" this particular account (the first I've read of the many available on Hudson Taylor and the CIM) would actually detract from its sense of immediacy, of being very close to Hudson Taylor himself. I recommend the book to any Christian who wants to learn about the remarkable faith of a deservedly famous historical missionary, as told by his son and containing many personal quotes by Hudson Taylor himself. I read this book first as recommended by Warren W. Wiersbe in his book, Living With the Giants.
I've heard various parts of Hudson Taylor's story over the years. However, this account, written by his daughter-in-law, gave me a new perspective on the founder of the China Inland Mission (now OMF).This book details the development of Hudson Taylor's faith from his teenage conversion to his last day on earth. One of the highlights for me involved reading about how Taylor grew to understand faith in everyday decisions, such as even doing without butter and milk, before God could guide him to the next step. Another involved learning how Hudson Taylor had to experience his own time in a "cave" (see 1 Samuel 22:1-2) before emerging as the great missions leader we celebrate today. Perhaps most inspiring for me was the record of Taylor's paralysis experience in 1874-1875, when he maintained his focus and determinedly kept up with his mounting correspondence through dictating to others.This book is not as neatly written as I would have liked. Also, I must agree with what has previously been written about the Kindle edition.However, this work did succeed in inspiring me to grow in my prayer life and seek the life of faith and perseverance that Hudson Taylor demonstrated in the most trying of circumstances.
