As a small groups pastor I have been searching for a book I can challenge our leaders to read that hits on this exact topic: do we really believe as we invite Christ's presence that He actually helps us & empowers us by His Spirit to truly transform & lead holy lives- for our benefit but most importantly for God's glory?It is accessible: really only 70 pages of the book, with another 40 pages of practical tips.
Went into the book looking for some practical help with our Church's small groups. First chapter and back cover really drew me in- all of the problems were correctly diagnosed with the typical church small groups.Instead got a crash course on the Christian contemplative tradition. Englemann is arguing that the solution to boring small groups is incorporating "Christian mysticism" into the groups.Some good practical tips in here, but save your time and look into the Christian contemplative tradition to see if it would be a good fit for your small group culture before reading this book.
Working my way through Soul-shaping Small Groups: A Refreshing Approach for Exasperated Leaders by Kim V. Engelmann. New from IVP, the subtitle sounded hopeful and honestly, the book doesn't disappoint.The concept for the book comes from Engelmann's own experience while serving as the head of the Care Ministries Department at Menlo Park Presbyterian Church. She quit her own group when it became "another chore, duty, obligation--something I did not need (p. 18)." We've never felt that way...have we? Definitely.Wrestling with the findings of Reveal, the study by Willow Creek Community Church that found that once a person moves beyond Growing in Christ (the second stage) small groups become far less important, Engelmann asks the question: "Are small groups the problem? Or is it the way we do small groups that is the problem (p. 21)?"She believes it's the way we're doing groups. I tend to agree. Her response is compelling. The first half of the book takes you through her journey and the second half gets very practical with exercises you can help your groups put into practice. Believe me, you'll find yourself pulled in by the journey. We all need that part, that set-up. The practical exercises are just that...practical and good to have in your toolbox.The topics covered are: * Building a praying community * Creating Emmaus Road groups * Invitational exercises * Sharing and praying for others * Listening * Interceding for others * Befriending scripture * Community, Celebration, and ServiceIf you, like many of us, are looking for ways to help the groups in your small group ministry have transformational experiences, Soul-shaping Small Groups: A Refreshing Approach for Exasperated Leaders is a book you should be reading. First for yourself. Then for your coaches. I really appreciate a line from the book: "The best training is always experiencing exactly what you are talking about. Until you get something from the inside out, you don't get it (p. 31)."Almost like the instruction you're given as the jet taxis out for take off. "In the event of sudden loss of cabin pressure...put the mask on yourself first and then help those around you." I needed help with this. I bet you can use some help too.
"When Jesus was going to launch his ministry he did not begin by raising an army, raising a budget, starting a university, building a headquarters or writing a manual. He started by forming a small group...His primary strategy for the extension of his movement was his leadership of a small group." Quite an astounding thought! This excerpt, presented in the foreword by John Ortberg, perfectly sets the stage for Kim Engelmann's Soul-Shaping Small Groups. If the foreword doesn't catch your eye, the subtitle certainly will: "A Refreshing Approach for Exasperated Leaders."Contrary to contemporary leadership books, Engelmann doesn't begin with an immediate plea for innovation or small group system restructuring. Rather, she takes the reader into her own journey of being apart of a small group. Engelmann describes her experiences humorously and candidly - stories that every small group leader is bound to identify with (i.e. forgetting a person's name, awkward members, losing track of what you're suppose to pray for someone, etc.)Engelmann's transparency is contagious and inviting. Throughout the book you'll catch insightful leadership lessons, not because she outlines them as principles to be noted, but because of her own stories of highs and lows in small group leadership.Ultimately, Engelmann's plea for the small group leader is to stop trying to "make things happen" and allow your heart to engage with "the God who is there" (59). Her heart, amidst her random attacks on doctrine and side conversations on mysticism, is to create communities of believers that experience Jesus. In fact, if I could subtitle the book, I'd call it, "Developing Small Group Communities That Experience Jesus." Over and over, Engelmann makes it clear that the goal of small groups is to create space for God to show up and allow his people to experience His love in the context of community.The part of Engelmann's book I had trouble with was her lack of evangelistic presence in the her "soul-shaping small groups." She went through and talked about serving the world, "befriending" Scripture, developing a praying community, and confessing with others. But sparingly, at best, did Engelmann talk about the desire to reach a lost world with the hope of the Gospel.Furthermore, I realize that the church today can dish out a lot of "information" without giving opportunities for "transformation;" however, Engelmann never balances her statements against theology and the vital role it plays in the health of small group communities.Engelmann also mentions twice in her book that the Bible "is a love letter from God to us." I can see her point in part, but to paint with this broad of a brush and use it to justify experiential activities seems misleading. The Bible is God graciously disclosing Himself to His people. To say it's His love letter to us is to mistakenly gloss over Jesus talking about Hell and repentance and tough stories in the Bible like Judas hanging himself, Sodom and Gomorfah, or Jeptha's tragic vow that resulted in the sacrifice of his daughter. Saying it's "God's love letter" may sound warming, but that kind of broad statement needs some handrails.
