The Pseudepigrapha are a collection of several dozen scriptures, generally Jewish ca. 200 BCE to 200 CE, that did not make the cut, that is, did not get included in the Old Testament, Apochrypha or New Testament (NT). The Pseudoepigrapha reflect doctrines and preoccupations of various sects, that is, they are not consistent with each other as, say, the books of the New Testament are consistent with each other. The Pseudepigrapha have separate textual histories and have survived in diverse manuscripts and languages, including Armenian, Coptic, Ethiopic, Greek, Latin, and Slavonic. In two other volumes, James Charlesworth has assembled translations of the Pseudepigrapha. (In this year, 2001, Amazon is selling those two volumes for $40 each.)"The Old Testament Pseudepigrapha & the New Testament" looks like it might have been an aborted introduction to that two-volume edition. Charlesworth addresses his discussion to serious biblical scholars to explain exactly how the Pseudepigrapha should and should not be used. For example, late in the book he takes several pages explaining the Pseudepigrapha's evidence that Hebrews and James in the NT could have been composed before 70 CE, not after 80 CE as previously thought.I have read this book and see why another reviewer complained that it was too slow to draw conclusions based on the evidence of the Pseudepigrapha. But what kind of conclusions do we crave? Pop science shows on TV tend to pander to our appetite for the sensational, but Charlesworth does not waste time debunking Revelation or revealing startling new evidence about the youth of Jesus.The book is concerned with the minutia of linguistic and textual hermeneutics that the casual reader would simply not care about but the specialist and scholar would. I give it four stars because it is good for that narrow audience. Everyone else should first get better acquainted with the Bible.

Dr. Charlesworth's most recent book on the Pseudepigrapha is short (about 100 pages) and is a great introduction, but it also leaves more to be desired. What Dr. Charlesworth shows is that yes, there are a number of parallels between the Pseudepigrapha and the New Testament. But, what I was hoping to find in this book was a more thorough analysis of what these parallels might mean for the New Testament. If the authors really were aware of these extra-canonical texts (assuming that they really were extra-canonical) and were actually influenced by them, then do any of the NT writings take on new meaning? Do they take on different meanings? How could they enhance one's understanding of a particular text? Or, can they shed any light on the New Testament at all?Again, this book is a great introduction to the Pseudepigrapha. But, it only begins to shed light on their relationship(s) to the New Testament and leaves the reader hoping that some time soon, someone will come along and dispell much of the remaining darkness.

Much or the Old Testament Pseudepigrapha - those scripture attributed to one yet written by another - were part in partial of the libraries of the New Testament writers. Their influence on the Essene and Qumran communities as well as the new Christian movement is most profound. Deslie Quinby was welcomed into the world of Down syndrome when her son JC was born with Down syndrome in 2004. Since then she has been an advocate and champion for her son and active in the Atlanta Down syndrome community. Deslie has her first Master’s degree from the George Washington University and her second Master’s from the Sloan School of Management at MIT. She is an accomplished businesswoman, having held executive positions at ChoicePoint, Carlson Wagonlit Travel, and The Weather Channel. She has also had experience running her own businesses. She is the mother of two boys. Jeannie Visootsak, MD, FAAP, Associate Professor, is a board-certified Developmental-Behavioral Pediatrician at Emory University School of Medicine, Atlanta, GA. She is also the Medical Director of the Down Syndrome Clinic and Down Syndrome Clinical Trial Unit at Emory University. The Down Syndrome Clinic was established in 2003 to meet the needs of families and children with Down syndrome. Dr. Visootsak also serves on the Professional Advisory Council for the National Down Syndrome Congress and is an Advisory Board Member on the Down Syndrome Association of Atlanta. Michael Johnson is an illustrator and graphic artist living in Atlanta, GA. He is currently an undergraduate student at Georgia State University. I purchased this book for my family's collection and I loved it so much I bought another copy for my son's school. This is a great tool if you've got a child fully included in school and you want to address your child's differences to their peers in an accurate and sensitive way. The staff at our school loved it, too!

As a Mommy to an extra chromosome little one, I like the whimsical, poetic approach of how all livings things have chromosomes and the positives we share. It's very handy for siblings or to read in an elementary classroom.

When the kids get a little older and need more information about Down syndrome, this is a great place to start. I read this to a 3rd grade class and then followed up with an email to the parents about what their kids learned. It's a positive message with just enough medical information to satisfy slightly older kids. I like the positive and straight forward message. I also like the book Don't Call me Special which is more broad but also has a good message.

This is much more than an adorable children's book. It provides excellent information for adults as well as for children. This book should be available to new parents of babies with Down's syndrome, to siblings of kids with Down's and should be in school and public libraries. It is fun and easy to read and the graphics are great. It gets 5 stars from me. A grandmother of a terrific kid with Down's syndrome

This is a great book. My 5 year old daughter understands it after some discussion but it's basic enough for young children but also for older. As an elementary teacher I four this book to be great for all ages! I highly recommend it.

I love the concept of the book. It was a great way to open up to my children about their baby sister in a very factual and direct way. The character illustrations were not my favorite.

What's fantastic about this book? It focuses on the actual science and not assumptions. It showcases individuals of different race (many books have all white characters, whereas Down Syndrome occurs in similar ratios all over the world. It's easy to understand and had a fun rhyming rhythm throughout. Going to read to my daughter's kindergarten class.

A wonderful read for anyone thinking about nursing school, just about to begin their nursing program, or in their first semester! It is a practical and straight forward read. It gives test taking tips, tips on how to deal with instructors, great communication ideas and tips on how to choose a school. If you are a student going for your masters or doctorate in nursing this book probably would not apply to you because you already know how to survive nursing school! :)

This book is full of tips for studying, and on how to juggle the stress of relationships and studying. It is more about studying than nursing. Anyone who has studied at the college or university level before will have a good handle on these practices, and be aware of the pitfalls. For them, the book is a waste of time. For those who have not studied at a higher level institution before will find it very helpful. It is written from the perspective of someone entering a 4 year bachelor program, and less for 2 year students who have already studied for their pre-requisites. Although many examples say they are from "technical school graduates" you can see that they assume no knowledge of study habits. Both my wife (the student) and I read it, and found it this way - we both have degrees in other programs.

I definetely see myslef referring back to this book again and again, a truly great investment.

For my needs, this Collegiate is a much better dictionary than the more simplified others, such as the dictionaries bundled with Kindle. Its definitions are more extensive and nuanced, especially useful when reading older material where the meanings of words (and the words themselves) have changed over time. Many times I have have found the more nuanced meanings of better authors in their selection of words.It is simple to make this the default dictionary in Kindle instead of the bundled one.At its heart, It is a standalone full copy of the Collegiate Dictionary, and can also be fully accessed as a separate book within Kindle. This makes browsing enjoyable, not just of its listings (including such pictures as dictionaries have) but also its supplemental materials.When using it as a writer (I know the word, but not its spelling, nor if I completely understand the word I seek to use) and not as a reader, I would have been more pleased if those who had added electronic usability had also made it more intuitive to those of us with poorer ability to spell by more simply allowing the browsing for a word as is done with a paper dictionary. Yes, the pages are there exactly as they are in the paper version, but, for me, the electronics are not as good as the physical movement of the pages or groups of pages. It might be that adding a line which could be dragged at the top to change the pages displayed would further improve this.

As a native Chinese who has never lived in an English-speaking country, this dictionary, though still a bit tough for me, is fantastic and enormously helpful for my English study. I am a graduate student now and have learned English as a second language for almost 15 years. Unfortunately, however, the English training I have received these years is not only boring, but also troublesomely unbalanced. It largely serves the aim of passing the exams held by Chinese education ministrative authority, thus making our Chinese learned a set of Chinese type English named as "Chinglish", which is characterized by an abundance of oddly ingenuine usages of words, phrases and sentences. I have gradually realized this matter and been dying for tasting the relish of genuine English, especially American English. Therefore, until one day I saw a highly recommended comment at Quora, about what a Merriam-Webster's Collegiate Dictionary could do for you, I just realized this dictionary is what I need. I was deeply fascinated by it at the moment I got it and saw its gorgeous cover, decent printing and rich items. After that, I almost opened it every day and spent quite much time reading it. It is proved to be the best and most helpful dictionary with most genuine American usage, and I can not help myself loving it!!! That is why I scored it as five stars.

Although this is a fantastic dictionary, the kindle version is flawed. If you are planning to use this as a kindle dictionary, you'll often run into definitions that contain the word itself. Even in hard copy dictionary this is a bit of a pain, but nothing significant as you can quickly do one more lookup for the root word. A simple example, happiness entry in this dictionary is "the state of being happy". This is not going to work in kindle as it's not easy to perform secondary/tertiary lookup. I often find myself switching back to default in kindle (especially oxford american dictionary, which gets this right.)I've always wondered, why and how dictionaries get away with this. Obviously the reason I am looking up a word is that I do not know what it means, so the definition should probably not include the very word itself.

The dictionary is very useful. I have Merriam-Webster Android version also, however I wanted hardcover type one. Because; 1) I'd like read/check preface, explanatory chart, explanatory notes, and so on this dictionary (it meaning, I'd like to read preface and appendixes of Webster). It's useful and important for deeply understanding. 2) I have Oxford paperback type. I love both dictionaries. But, hardcover type is more better for a a long time to keep good condition.So, I recommend hardcover type dictionary even it's very heavy :) However, when I opened the dictionary at first... I'm very shocked for so bad condition/quality... One page is severely corrupted (It's not second hand). I think Amazon is not bad. It's just publisher's problem. In actually, I'd like to request to change. But, I'm in Japan... so let it go (If I request to change the new one, I have to wait 2 more weeks... I need the dictionary "NOW", it's not next month). I know it's very rare case, it's not so much (I had never seen that condition on English books. It's first time). I think dictionary is the most important book in all books. If this likely rare condition is on a kind of novel, I was not so much shocked. So, I recommend that if you want to buy a dictionary, real book store (not online) is better, because we can check the condition before buying it.

Perfect, you can't find a hard cover dictionary in many stores anymore, and this is just what I was looking for. FYI: laminated just means it has a high gloss finish with a very thin plastic coating to make it shine. I like to create quick tabs out of post-it notes they do not come with the dictionary.

Being that I am dyslectic, a dictionary is of an absolute to me. As I write this, if it were not for spell check, this would make no sense to anyone. So, for me I believe that every home should have a dictionary. The computer has made it to easy for everyone to depend on the spell check and not truly learn how to spell. That posses a problem when you have to read. So, both of my sons learned at home, not in school, how to use a dictionary, just like I did "IN SCHOOL"The other reason it is so handy, is sometimes, not even the spell check can find the correct spelling for certain words, for me. When I have this come up, the dictionary comes out. I ALWAYS find in it what the computer does not! My dictionary is always on the left side of my desk. It is invaluable.

My daughter loves the Summer Fit series. It gives her just enough work each day to feel challenged. The physical fitness aspect is a bit silly, but she gets a kick out of it.That being said, my daughter is a student who loves homework during the regular school year. Therefore, she enjoys these "assignments" which help her feel engaged over the summer. My son looks forward to his freedom during the summer. These activity books would never work for him without a lot of struggle.And, as a former teacher, I believe that summer provides the kids with great opportunities to be engaged in ways that we don't always have time for during the school year: cooking meals for the family, planting gardens, traveling to historic and interesting places. Activity books are a fun distraction but I don't think they are a necessary or vital part of the summer for keeping academic skills sharp.In the end, I would recommend these books for any kid who enjoys this type of activity. For other kids, however, these are a bit too much like the drudgery of homework. Just get them doing something useful outside and away from screens!

I bought this for my daughter to keep her brain fresh over the summer. The first few pages are pretests in reading and math. Questions 6 and 7 have a misprint and there is no function listed (I can tell from the answer key that they wanted the kids to divide, but they obviously didn't proofread it very well). The answer key has a wrong answer for question #9. My daughter got the right answer but then was frustrated that it didn't match the answer key. This is ridiculously sloppy for a book that is supposed to hone their skills. I don't even want to have her continue with the book now. I wouldn't purchase a book from this series again.

This workbook has been a great tool for my son to keep his learning fresh over the summer without taking a lot of time away from summer activities.Like other summer workbooks there is a variety of academic subjects for my child to work on each day. However, I chose Summer Fit because I liked the encouragement to stay active and the character connection. Sadly, we haven't used the suggested exercise activities as I had expected. However we have benefited from the character connection. Those are usually on Fridays when the workbook exercises are lighter which helped with summer vacation traveling.Unfortunately, the answers in the back of this book were not checked as much as they should have been. After a few weeks using this workbook my son and I started to expect at least one answer in the back of the book to be wrong each day. Now, when I check my sons answers, I put a mark next to the ones he misses and say, "check these again to see if you are right or if the book is right."The only other things about these academic exercises that I think could change is that sometimes the instructions are not clear (my son has Aspergers so that is important to us) and every once-in-awhile a problem or question won't match the purpose of the exercise. Other than that this book is an excellent summer resource.

We bought this book for our son going into 8th grade. I felt this book was easier than I was expecting for his age level. The book is broken down by weeks and has a set amount of pages for the student to complete each day. I liked this because it set expectations. This book also covered a wide variety of subjects and even encouraged his to get up and exercise!

Seems not quite advanced enough for those going into seventh grade. The summer reading and math required summer work provided by my son's school was much more challenging. I liked it, but it's easy work, not age appropriate.

I have found that my daughter does better at the start of the school year if she has a summer workbook.She really liked this one. It was easy to follow and we liked the little exercises they had for each day.

Am using this book to help a young man become ready for 8th grade. Great book to accomplish this. Great activities for student!

Reading this for the FIRST time as an adult, I LOVED it! Our son was studying a portion of this book in school. I was kind of intrigued and so decided to purchase a copy for both him and I to read. (He enjoyed it also!)Mafatu, 15, is terrified of the sea and has always been that way for as long as he can remember. He lost his mother at the tender age of 3 and is still awoken at night sometimes with the sound of the sea causing him to break out in a cold sweat. With family and other acquaintances, including kids his age, looking down on him he has only two true friends: Uri, a dog and Kivi, an albatross.After hearing others call him a coward Mafatu decides that drastic action is needed! What does he do? Suspense keeps the reader engrossed as we are drawn in to his adventure. Go with him, feel for him as he faces his fears and ultimately overcomes them.EXCELLENT writing. SO descriptive! Should say though that this is NOT a book for young children. There are scary parts and of course the story does include the black eaters of men! Wonderful though for kids that bit older, along with teenagers and even adults! Not too long of a read and definitely well worth it. I purchased a copy of this book for my Kindle. I was not required to write a review but chose to do so. Thanks, Liz

My absolute favorite book from childhood. Our teacher read it to our classroom in 4th grade and it's story has stayed with me for over 35 years.A fantastic story of courage, bravery, survival, and a respect of nature told from the perspective of an insecure Polynesian boy who had been an outcast in his tribe because of his fear of the sea. His fear manifested because of the loss of his mother in an accident while on the water.He feels compelled to conquer his fears and takes to the sea, with his pet dog and albatross, only to find himself stranded on a seemingly deserted island. He must survive and return to his home if he can.Highly recommended!

I just re-read this favorite from my youth. It is just as compelling a story today as it was then, and I enjoyed it as much as when I was a boy. I expect to re-read this many more times over the years.It is a wonderful story about facing one's fears. It is a pre-adolescent coming-of-age story set on an atoll in the South Pacific. Mafatu, the Boy Who Was Afraid, decides to face his greatest fear, even if it costs him his life.Although the story is from the perspective of a boy, I expect both boys and girls would get a lot out of the story. Not only that, I suspect most adults from most cultures might enjoy it as well.

I grew up very poor in a rural southern area of North Carolina. In a very small school in the early 1960's our teacher read to us every day after lunch. I was enthralled by this story. Our family didn't own a tv and I had never imagined a culture so different than mine. I put my head down on my desk and listened as she read about the 'boy who was afraid'. I'm 57 years old now and near the end of a career which began as a federally licensed nuclear reactor operator. I still have my copy that I got as a boy. I read it to my son (many times) and now my grandson, both who were as captivated as I was. This is an example of a book that can change lives, because I began my love of reading with this, and the other books my teacher read to us in a hot and sleepy school room.

Call it Courage is to put it simply, an amazing classic novel written by the great Armstrong Sperry, who also wrote one of my favorite short stories, The Ghost of the Lagoon, which I read back when I was a child, and unfortunately, never had the chance to read anything else by the man until recently. Well I just finished Call it Courage and I have to say I honestly enjoyed it far more than Ghost of the Lagoon, it has such a sense of wonder, adventure, heart, and warmth, that is just as relatable today as it was when it was written. How many modern day boys are often teased and bullied due to their lack or courage or bravery? While the novel is historical it's message is timeless. Call it Courage takes place "before the time of traders and missionaries" so based on that fact, it must take place sometimes in the early 19th century or before, since that's when the traders and missionaries began arriving. It takes place in a traditional Polynesian society on the tiny coral atoll of Hikueru, which is situated in the Tuamotu Archipelago of French Polynesia in modern times. It follows an adolescent boy named Mafatu, who grew up intensely afraid of the sea due to a close brush with death from it as a baby that ended up taking the life of his mother. Being the son of a chief Tavana Nui, he is mocked and shamed by virtually the entire community due to his lack of bravery and courage when it comes to fishing or even swimming. Finally, it comes to the point where he has had enough and he sets off on a journey away from Hikueru along with his faithful dog Uri and Albatross Kivi,to prove his worth and bring his father and the community pride and joy. Call it Courage is one of the finest examples of storytelling I have ever experienced, although I never had the chance to read it as a child, I know that I would have loved it even more then than I do now. Told through beautiful, poetic language, Call it Courage is a well deserved 5 stars.

I remembered reading this book, and loving it, when I was ten. So I wanted to read it again to understand why it made such an impression on me. The rhythm of the book, the adventures and the main character's ingenuity and resilient character were as wonderful as I remembered, but I had forgotten about the somewhat disturbing ending. Also, there is one point that has not aged as well as the rest of the book: the terrifying "eaters-of-men" who pursue Mafatu are described as 'savages' and 'black', which was perhaps a common idea in 1940 but somehow does not sit well now. For those two reasons, I am not going to pass the book along to my 8 year-old nephew, but I might in a few years.
